Windows Server 2008 R2 builds on Windows Server 2008, expanding existing technology and adding new features to enable IT professionals to increase the reliability and flexibility of their server infrastructures. New virtualization tools, management enhancements, and Web resources help save time, reduce costs, and provide a platform for a dynamic and efficiently managed data center. Orders for the Windows Server 2008 operating system are accepted only in conjunction with a valid hardware order. In addition to Windows Server 2008 R2, to allow for the most flexibility for our customers, User and Device CAL Suites for Standard and Premium versions of Small Business Server (SBS) 2008 and for Windows Essential Business Server (EBS) 2008 are available to be shipped by IBM: SBS 2008 CAL Suite: For each user or device accessing the SBS network SBS 2008 CAL Suite for Premium: For only those users or devices accessing the premium features of SBS 2008 Premium Edition EBS 2008 CAL Suite: For each user or device accessing the EBS network EBS 2008 CAL Suite for Premium: For only those users or devices accessing the premium features of EBS 2008 Premium Edition Small Business Server 2008 licensing and CAL requirements The Windows Small Business Server 2008 license gives you the right to install and use the server software. The purchase of Windows Small Business Server 2008 comes with five CALs, which gives the customer the right to have five devices or users access the server software. With Windows Small Business Server 2008, use of server services does not activate CALs. Instead, businesses choose how CALs will be used based on how the server needs to be accessed on a regular basis. Both editions of Windows Small Business Server 2008 offer two types of CALs to choose from: device-based (device CALs) or user-based (user CALs) options. These options provide the flexibility to choose the CAL that best suits your organization. Essential Business Server 2008 licensing and CAL requirements IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

The EBS 2008 server license gives you the right to run instances of the server software. The purchase of Windows Essential Business Server 2008 comes with five CALs, which allow you to have five devices or users access the server software. Customers purchase a server license for the Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Edition of the server product they will use and purchase CALs for users or devices accessing the Windows Essential Business Server network. This is consistent with the licensing terms for Windows Small Business Server 2008 (described above). Note: The EBS 2008 product may be connected to a maximum of 300 authenticated users or devices operating on one or more networks, including any indirect connections made through software or hardware. Key prerequisites These offerings must be ordered with or for usage on System x hardware. They are supported on System x and BladeCenter servers. The media kit contains DVD optical media. It is recommended that an optical DVD drive be configured with the server. Planned availability date November 30, 2009, for: Offerings related to program number 5731-CAL and drop-in-the-box offerings related to program number 5731-W28 Preloaded offerings related to program number 5731-W28 Description Windows Server 2008 R2 key technology investments Windows Server 2008 R2 builds on Windows Server 2008, expanding existing technology and adding new features to enable IT professionals to increase the reliability and flexibility of their server infrastructures. New virtualization tools, management enhancements, and Web resources help save time, reduce costs, and provide a platform for a dynamic and efficiently managed data center. Scalability and reliability Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows operating system to be offered for only 64-bit processors. And Windows Server 2008 R2 can now support up to 256 logical processor cores for a single operating system instance, including enhancements in Hyper-V virtual machines which are able to address up to 32 logical cores in a single VM. These improvements not only provide more power for your money, but also offer better reliability with fewer locks and greater parallelism. Server and desktop virtualization Windows Server 2008 R2 provides both Client and Server virtualization. Server virtualization is provided by Hyper-V and Presentation virtualization is provided by Remote Desktop Services. Hyper-V virtualizes the system resources of a physical computer, allowing you to provide a virtualized environment for operating systems and applications. Remote Desktop Services (formally known as Terminal Services) virtualizes a processing environment and isolates the processing from the graphics and I/O, making it possible to run an application in one location but have it be controlled in another. Presentation virtualization allows users to run a single application, or a complete desktop offering multiple applications. IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2

System and power management Windows Server 2008 R2 addresses complexity and workload for day-to-day server managers across all of its management-oriented consoles with improved remote administration, including a remotely installable Server Manager and improved identity management features via the updated and simplified Active Directory Domain Services and Active Directory Federated Services. Windows Server 2008 R2 also improves on the popular PowerShell feature introduced in Windows Server 2008. PowerShell 2.0 significantly enhances the earlier version with the inclusion of more than 240 new prebuilt cmdlets as well as a new graphical user interface (GUI) that adds professional-level development features for creating new cmdlets. The new GUI includes colored syntaxing, new production script debugging capabilities, and new testing tools. Windows Server 2008 introduced a "balanced" power policy, which monitors the utilization level of the processors on the server and dynamically adjusts the processor performance states to limit power to the needs of the workload. Windows Server 2008 R2 enhances this power saving feature by adding Core Parking and expanding on power-oriented Group Policy settings. Web application platform Windows Server 2008 R2 includes an updated Web server role, Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5, and greater support for.net on Server Core. Design goals for IIS 7.5 concentrated on improvements that enable Web administrators to more easily deploy and manage Web applications that increase both reliability and scalability. Additionally, IIS 7.5 has streamlined management capabilities and provides more ways to customize your Web serving environment. Improvements to IIS and the Windows Web platform, which are included in Windows Server 2008 R2, include reduced effort to administer and support Webbased applications, enhanced security for Web-based applications, improved filetransfer services, the ability to extend the functionality and features for Web-based applications, and improved availability and performance for Web-based applications and services. Windows Server 2008 R2 edition overview and comparisons Windows Server 2008 R2 is available in multiple editions to support the varying server and workload needs of organizations. Network Access Connections (RRAS) Unlimited Remote Desktop Admin Connections 2 Remote Desktop Services Gateway Unlimited Virtual Image Use Rights Unlimited Max X64 RAM 2 TB Max X64 Sockets 64 (256 cores) CAL overview Device CALs With device CALs, you acquire a CAL for every device such as laptops, desktop computers, and Microsoft Windows Mobile based Pocket PCs and smart phones that need access to your server. With this option, any user can access the server on the licensed device. Device CALs might make the most economic and administrative sense for an organization that has multiple users for one device, such as shift workers. If you choose device CALs, then each device that accesses the Windows Small Business Server 2008 server will consume a CAL, and you can reallocate that CAL if you retire a device. User CALs With user CALs, you acquire a CAL for individuals who are given named access to your server. Licensed users can access the server from any device. User CALs might make the most sense for an organization that has many roaming employees who need access to the corporate network from mobile devices or employees who use multiple devices to access the network. You can reallocate a user CAL if a reassignment is permanent. You can also temporarily reassign a user CAL if the user is on leave or the device is disabled. CAL compliance When completing the CAL license document, you can specify whether you would like a per-user or a per-device CAL. For CAL add-in packs, separate versions are available for per-user and per-device preferences. For license compliance, it is recommended that you maintain records of your purchase and CAL assignments. Small Business Server 2008 licensing and CAL requirements The Windows Small Business Server 2008 license gives you the right to install and use the server software. The purchase of Windows Small Business Server 2008 comes with five CALs, which allow you to have five devices or users access the server software. Two types of Small Business Server 2008 CALs To allow for the most flexibility for our customers, IBM is introducing two Microsoft CAL Suites for the 2008 version of Small Business Server: SBS 2008 CAL Suite: For each user or device accessing the SBS network SBS 2008 CAL Suite for Premium: For only those users or devices accessing the premium features of SBS 2008 Premium Edition SBS 2008 CAL quantity from IBM SBS 2008 CAL Suite: Available in 1 pack quantity from IBM for either User or Device SBS 2008 CAL Suite for Premium Users or Devices: Available in 1 pack quantity from IBM for either User or Device IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 5
