Semantic Days Conference 2013 Sola strand Hotel, Stavanger, Norway Common IT solutions for The Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) Dr. Thore Langeland Strategic Advisor, EPIM Mobile: +47 9095 1756 Email: tla@epim.no
Purpose of EPIM Utilise and make available IT solutions that facilitate the best possible flow of information between any and all of its users, these being owners of licensees on the NCS and relevant authorities involved in exploration, development, production and transport on the NCS. EPIM is owned and governed by the operators on the NCS. 2 2
Integrated Operations (IO) IO is integrated work processes across operations in real time IO is access to offshore information onshore in real time, transforming data to information and new integrated work processes IO is a quiet revolution that is changing the offshore industry IO is safer, faster and better decisions 3 3
Integrated Operations and the 5Is 1. Instrumented Automated identification and data capture (AIDC) and automation 2. Interconnected Digital infrastructure and Information security 3. Integrated data Information management 4. Innovative computing and business intelligent software 5. Intelligent decisions 4 4
Integrated Operations - Generation 1 and 2 Potential Integration across onshore and offshore Integration across companies Generation 1 Integrated onshore and offshore centers Continuous onshore support Generation 2 Integrated operation centers of operators and vendors Heavily automated processes 24/7 operation Limited integration History Self-sustainable fields Specialized onshore units Periodic onshore support Time 5 2000 2005 2010 2015 5
Operations - History, IO G1 & G2 Degrees of real time data integration onshore Generation 2 A common terminology for E&P ensuring that concepts are consistently defined across domains (oil and gas ontology) Any business process or combination of business processes may be presented on one screen Reasoning software using data from several domains (drilling, production, logistics and operations and maintenance) are deployed and provide planning information and actions (automated or partially automated) Generation 1 Terminologies established for single domains The basis for XML schemas for automatic transferal of data between applications in same domain There is one screen per domain The opportunity for concurrent analysis of data from different domains are still limited History Daily operational morning meeting week days No real time data available onshore Many applications are used offshore for the same purpose There are many screens per domain and data are locked in the various applications 6 6
Operations - History, IO G1 & G2 Organizational changes Generation 2 Operation centers of operators and vendors are integrated Vendors are managing processes operators managed earlier Several tasks are automated The parties cooperate over the net (virtual teams, leadership, culture, compensation new operational concepts, decision processes, roles and procedures have to be adapted virtual operation centers) The centers are operating 24/7 and tasks are carried out according to follow the sun principles Generation 1 Decisions are made jointly by teams onshore and offshore Personnel onshore monitor operations in real-time, identify operational and safety related problems, discuss actions with and support personnel offshore in the implementation phase For some areas like drilling onshore support is available 24/7, for other areas beyond normal work hours Off-the-shelf technologies like high quality audio and video systems are used extensively for real time co-operation History Daily operational decisions are made offshore with limited onshore support Personnel on- and offshore belong to several different organizational units Plans are made and changed fragmentally and at fixed times IT solutions are specialized and silo-focused Data necessary to optimize operations is time-consuming and difficult to gather 7

Oil and Gas Ontology (OGO) (based on ISO 15296) A Norwegian industry initiative (NORSOK) estimated the potential of ISO 15926 to be 25% reduction in CAPEX and 20% reduction in OPEX. EPIM has in close collaboration with Norwegian Oil and Gas Association and PCA developed parts of the OGO already within: Planning 9 Environment Drilling Production Development Operations and maintenance Transport Logistics EPIM has knowledge of and experience with building and operating RDF triplestores structured according to GIM and based on Semantic Web Technology Harmonizing the E&P terminology Integrating the terminology from the different business domains in E&P HSSE Drilling Development Production Integrating drilling dialects Logistics Integrating HSE dialects across E&P sector Integrating development dialects Creating a common terminology for the E&P sector Harmonizing the oil and gas terminology in E&P From local domain data standards to an oil and gas terminology Integrating production dialects Integrating logistic dialects The oil & gas The terminoloy Oil & Gas Ontology (www.posccaesar.org) (www.posccaesar.org) PCA Reference Data Library Operation & Maintenance Integrating O&M dialects Transport Integrating transportation dialects Contains dictionaries, taxonomies and ontologies for relevant business processes in E&P sector 9

ISO 15926 and Semantic Web technology is the way forward ISO 15926 has a generic conceptual model for data integration deploying Semantic Web Technology Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a distributed data model on the Semantic Web consisting of a triple Evolution: Web 1.0 Pages and documents Web 2.0 Social networking Web 3.0 Semantic Web Table Subject Predicate Object Any table of data might be expressed as RDF triples where Subject is the row number Predicate is the content of column Object is the cell value Subject and predicate are resources. A resource is anything that someone want to talk about and that has a unique address through a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). Why ontology? The real world is complex and changing, you need a solution that can cope with that complexity and adapt with the changes. That's what ontology does for you 12 12
