PALS is the essential screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring tool for measuring the fundamental components of literacy. 888.924.7257 www.palsmarketplace.com

PALS Who are we? The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) and Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening in Spanish (PALS español) are research-based assessments with strong technical adequacy. The PALS suite provides essential screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring tools for measuring the fundamental components of literacy in English and Spanish. PALS can be administered three times a year and used for progress monitoring throughout. Immediately after administering PALS, teachers have access to data for every student showing what literacy skills to target for instruction. The PALS Online Score Entry & Reporting System is a user-friendly online assessment tool that provides fast and efficient score entry, reports, additional progress monitoring assessments, and instructional resources. Our History PALS was developed by Marcia Invernizzi, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Virginia through the Early Intervention Reading Initiative. Since 1997, PALS has served as the universal screening tool for Virginia and is now used across the U.S. and in several foreign countries for early identification and intervention. Extensive pilot studies and over a decade of classroom testing have established the strong technical adequacy of PALS assessments. PALS español was developed by Karen Ford, Ph.D., a bilingual reading researcher at the University of Virginia. PALS español measures children s developing knowledge of the fundamental components of Spanish literacy in kindergarten through third grade. The goal of PALS español is to provide Spanish-speaking children in the United States equal access to an effective, research-based literacy assessment and intervention. Customer Support PALS offers phone and email support staffed by experienced educators. The PALS staff is prepared to answer questions and help teachers, reading specialists, and literacy coaches use PALS data to plan instruction. This year, we have reduced the number of students identified with a significant reading deficiency. Love it! - Julie, 3rd grade teacher

Resources for Planning Instruction The PALS Online Score Entry & Reporting System also provides support for linking assessment data to effective literacy instruction. Plan differentiated instruction using resources available only through a PALS Online account: Interactive Grouping Function The interactive PALS Grouping Function uses assessment data to create small groups for targeted instruction. Groups are generated based on students instructional oral reading levels and spelling stages, and then teachers may refine the suggested groups. Grouping reports that organize each group s diagnostic data make planning instruction fast and effective. Electronic Lesson Plans and Activities Database PALS Electronic Lesson Plans provide a framework for differentiated, small group instruction for all readers: Emergent, Beginner, Transitional, and Intermediate/Advanced. Each lesson plan suggests appropriate literacy strategies tailored to developmental reading and spelling stages. Teachers can adapt the lesson plans to meet the needs and interests of their literacy groups, using any text. Each lesson plan includes access to a database of research-based instructional activities. Try a new strategy or find an old favorite, and create a complete lesson plan in minutes!
