Yet it is the starting point for Northern Europe, Spain and Portugal, and Eastern Europe as well! The «Pont de Normandie» (inaugurated only a few years ago) links both sides of the Seine estuary and provides a non-stop motorway from the Channel Tunnel right through to Brittany, the South West coast of France and Northern Spain. Le Havre is also, and has been over centuries, a hub for international trade. Today, it is a port of call for over 200 regular sea-lines : it is linked to over 500 ports worldwide. Thus, Le Havre is the leading French port for foreign trade. At the same time, Le Havre airport provides regular flights to Luxemburg, Belgium, Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Lyon, Nantes or Bordeaux, and a number of seasonal flights. You can travel to and from LH any way you want : by train, by sea, by air and by road. In this city land and sea come together in a very subtle way. To the West and South, you will find the beach, the docks, the locks, the bridges, the canals and the marina. You may also get a surprise with the new project now under way «Port 2000», a fast turnover multimodal container platform. Port 2000 will provide facilities for the world's largest overpanamax containerships and their cargoes bound both for
other European ports and for destinations all over the world. To the North and the East is the «Plateau de Caux», with its rich farmland, and the towering cliffs, for which Etretat is very famous. The colour of sport in Le Havre is blue : sky blue or navy blue, the traditional colours of the strip of Le Havre Athletic Club and its football and rugby teams. Blue sea and blue sky meet in windsurfing and waterskiing. Sport turns green on the Octeville and Etretat Golf courses, or white at the skating rink. Cultural activities are to be found everywhere : at the Volcan centre for theatre, cinema or music, in the museums and the art galleries (never forget that Normandy goes hand in hand with impressionism!), the libraries and booksellers as well as at the Docks Café arena or in the numerous cafés and discos for those looking for less heady stuff. When facing a difficult situation, you can then approach a welfare officer. She will suggest solutions to your problems, let you know about all kinds of assistance to which you are entitled.
