2 3 Special Shapes Using Special Bricks We do not recommend London Bricks for use as copings or sills so Hanson. BN..2 Bullnose external return on flat. AR.2.4 Tapered stretcher. Purpose made tapered single cant has produced a range of special shaped bricks that are an exact match to London Bricks. 2 Alternatively a select range of Stock Specials is available in Smooth Red and Smooth Blue. Ideal for garden walls, conservatories and other design features to add the finishing touches and give added protection to the brickwork. All Hanson products are manufactured to a quality assurance system which conforms to BS EN ISO 900. Ask your merchant for details. 4 5 London Extras Technical Info Also in the London Brick range are two types that are often underrated. Commons The standard brick for all purposes by virtue of its strength, durability and uniformity. It is used extensively for industrial chimneys, foundations and other specialist work. These are available in both 65mm and 73mm formats with a minimum of 25 N/mm 2 when laid frog up. Selected Regrades As well as Commons, don t forget we also have available from time to time, a range of London Selected Regrades, manufactured under the strict quality assurance system BS EN ISO 900. These are assorted bricks from our London Brick range that have been reclassified after firing because of their non standard colour, texture or because they have minor damage. Their physical properties, size, compressive strength etc are the same as for best quality London Bricks. Selected Regrades conform to the requirements of BS EN 77-. Due to their inconsistency in colour and texture however, these products are not suitable for facings. Technical Information All London Bricks are manufactured to comply with BS EN 77- Specification for masonry units Part : Clay masonry units to a size of 25mm x 02.5mm x 65mm. They all conform to the technical specification: Brick Type All London Facing Common and Selected Regrade bricks Minimum Compressive Strength N/mm 2 Durability Active Soluble Salts Content Water Absorption Weight kg/brick 25 (frog up) F S2 23%.95 dry Mortar mixes for London Bricks The following bricks are also available in 73mm format: Rustic Rustic Antique Tudor Heather Commons Application Internal and external from dpc to eaves Recommended mix proportions : 5 Portland cement : sand + plasticiser or : : 5 /2 cement : lime : sand + plasticiser Free-standing walls, retaining walls and all brickwork below dpc and below ground : 4 Portland* cement : sand + plasticiser or : /2 : 4 /2 cement* : lime : sand + plasticiser * Free-standing walls and severely exposed free standing walls, or for rendered brickwork use sulphate-resisting cement. The application of render to chimneys, parapet walls and retaining walls is not recommended. More detailed advice on the above can be found on the Hanson website. 6 7 Technical Info (cont.) Coping with dpc and 45mm overhang for London brickwork. Concrete coping can be used as an alternative. (N.B. All brickwork copings should be frost resistant quality) Detailing Protect work under construction from weather. 2 Batch materials in measured volumes... 3...not shovelfuls. Protect London free-standing walls, retaining walls, chimneys and external pillars with an overhanging coping shedding water at least 45mm from face of brickwork. Protect earth face of retaining walls with a continuous waterproof membrane. 4 Fill all joints. 5 7 Press and rub exposed face of mortar joint with the rounded edge of a piece of wood. Avoid over tapping new-laid bricks. Bricklaying Fill all joints. Avoid over tapping new-laid bricks. Avoid adjusting bricks after initial suction effect on mortar. Avoid mortar staining on exposed brick face remove immediately when it occurs. Press and rub exposed face of mortar joint with rounded edge of a piece of wood or pointing tool. 6 Avoid mortar stains. Protect work under construction from weather, protect newly completed work from overnight frosts. Do not build in freezing conditions. Lay London Bricks frog upwards for maximum strength and weight: when neither is required, as in most low-rise dwellings, bricks may be laid frog down. Painting directly on to external London walls is generally not recommended. For further advice contact our Product Services Department on 08706 097092. Mortars Use clean sharp sand such as BS 200 grade S. Batch materials in measured volumes, not shovelfuls. Machine mixing is generally better than hand mixing. Only add plasticizers, colouring pigments etc, strictly to manufacturer s instructions. Discard unused mortar more than two hours old. Protect earth face of retaining walls with a continuous membrane.

Cover tops of packs. Allow circulation of air. Handling Mix bricks from different packs. Avoid dropping or banging bricks together, which causes chipping. This mark can only be used after the product has been independently tested and manufacturing facilities visited and assessed.
