Hanson Building Products guide to London Brick

02 03 Today there are more than 26 different bricks in the London Brick range, from the soft, sandy coloured Hereward Light, to the dark, distinctively wavy-ridged Rustic. Times change, but a brick is a brick...isn t it? Well not if it s a London Brick! Originally manufactured by The London Brick Company and now under the ownership of Hanson; London Bricks have built a reputation for themselves as a popular, well known product that s not been out of style in over 00 years! From the time the kilns were first lit in the late 9th century we ve been in production ever since! Visit us at: www.hanson.biz/uk They all offer the continuity of manufacture, finish, colour and weathering that make them ideal for matching to existing brickwork for extensions and remedial work. If you re working on any of the 5 million homes in the UK originally built from London Brick stock, then all your matching and continuity problems are solved. And remember London Bricks have the distinctive frog feature making them easier to cut and handle. Nowadays buying the London Brick couldn t be simpler, with more stockists than ever offering a greater range. We re introducing new Point of Sale and signage to provide you with more information and to help make your selection trouble free. Look out for the signs, London Bricks Stocked Here and you can be sure of immediate availability, when you want it. What s more, to ensure you make a correct brick match every time, we have produced a London Brick Matching Guide. 4 5 London Extras Technical Info Also in the London Brick range are two types that are often underrated. Commons The standard brick for all purposes by virtue of its strength, durability and uniformity. It is used extensively for industrial chimneys, foundations and other specialist work. These are available in both 65mm and 73mm formats with a minimum of 25 N/mm 2 when laid frog up. Selected Regrades As well as Commons, don t forget we also have available from time to time, a range of London Selected Regrades, manufactured under the strict quality assurance system BS EN ISO 900. These are assorted bricks from our London Brick range that have been reclassified after firing because of their non standard colour, texture or because they have minor damage. Their physical properties, size, compressive strength etc are the same as for best quality London Bricks. Selected Regrades conform to the requirements of BS EN 77-. Due to their inconsistency in colour and texture however, these products are not suitable for facings. Technical Information All London Bricks are manufactured to comply with BS EN 77- Specification for masonry units Part : Clay masonry units to a size of 25mm x 02.5mm x 65mm. They all conform to the technical specification: Brick Type All London Facing Common and Selected Regrade bricks Minimum Compressive Strength N/mm 2 Durability Active Soluble Salts Content Water Absorption Weight kg/brick 25 (frog up) F S2 23%.95 dry Mortar mixes for London Bricks The following bricks are also available in 73mm format: Rustic Rustic Antique Tudor Heather Commons Application Internal and external from dpc to eaves Recommended mix proportions : 5 Portland cement : sand + plasticiser or : : 5 /2 cement : lime : sand + plasticiser Free-standing walls, retaining walls and all brickwork below dpc and below ground : 4 Portland* cement : sand + plasticiser or : /2 : 4 /2 cement* : lime : sand + plasticiser * Free-standing walls and severely exposed free standing walls, or for rendered brickwork use sulphate-resisting cement.
