Brownie Snacks Badge Activity Plan 1 Badge Purpose: When girls have earned this badge, they ll know how to make yummy snacks for their families and friends. Program Essentials Link: Healthy Living and Creativity Fun Patch Link: Living Healthy Activity Plan Length: 1.5 hours Girls Take the Lead: While earning this award, there are many ways for girls to be leaders. These can be done by a small group or by individuals. Badge Buddies o Before the meeting, talk to girls about the activities. Have buddies decide what they want to try or ask them if they want to try something different. o o Buddies can assist adults with prep needed for activities. During the meeting, they can help lead other girls though the activities. They should make sure everyone has what they need and feels included. Food Friends o Talk to girls about what the snack will be and how they can help. Customize It: If your group wants to expand work on this badge or simply try different activities, go for it! There are many ways to earn this award, including: completing the activities as listed in the Brownie Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting, completing two of these activity plans, attending a council-sponsored event or customizing activities. Pick the one(s) that work best for your group. Girls will know they have earned the award if: They can identify healthy food options They have made multiple snacks They have shared what they learned with others Tips and Tools Girls should never use (or even touch!) the stove, oven, knives or other kitchen appliances without an adult to help. Check out ways to stay safe using Safety-Wise at GirlScoutsRV.org. Ensure that your activities are accessible to everyone. Ask in advance if any special accommodations need to be made. Ask an adult from your troop to complete the Girls Cook In training session, which enables adult volunteers to teach girls the skills involved with planning and preparing healthy food indoors. o You will then be on a Girl Scout page where you can find lessons for this badge. This activity plan has been adapted from the Brownie Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting Snacks Badge, which can be used for additional information and activities. Getting Started Optional: Girl Scout Promise and Law printed out on poster board 1. Welcome everyone to the meeting. 2. Recite the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Use repeat-after-me or say them as a group if girls know it by heart. Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 3. Sing the Brownie Smile Song. Use repeat-after-me or sing as a group if girls know it by heart. The Brownie Smile Song I ve got something in my pocket It belongs across my face I keep it very close at hand In a most convenient place I m sure you wouldn t guess it If you guessed a long, long while So I ll take it out and put it on It s a great big Brownie Smile! Activity #1: Food Pairings Badge Connection: Step 1 Jump into the world of snacks Prep Needed: Gather materials and supplies. Write out food pairings onto note cards, one food item per card. Peanut butter and jelly Salt and pepper Pancakes and syrup Spaghetti and meatballs Veggies and dip Chips and salsa Chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows Brownies - Snacks Activity Plan 1 2013 Girl Scouts River Valleys 2

Food pairing cards Tape 1. Tape one food pairing card to each girl s back. 2. Ask girls to figure out what food they have on their back by asking each other yes or no questions. E.g. Do I eat my food with my hands? Is my food purple? Is my food sweet? Is my food salty? Am I jelly? 3. Once girls know their food items, they should walk around and look for the food item that goes well with their own. E.g. Jelly looks for peanut butter 4. Once girls have found their partner, they should greet one another with the Girl Scout handshake and share about their favorite snack. Activity #2: Meal Mash-Up Badge Connection: Step 1 Jump into the world of snacks Prep Needed: Gather materials and supplies. Print and cut out the Meal Mash Up food items or write food items on note cards (one set per small group of 3 5 girls). Meal Mash Up Food Items (attached at end) or note cards 1. Pass out one set of food items to each team. 2. Tell each team to put together a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner from the food items they have. 3. Ask each team to share their favorite meal from the ones they made. Activity #3: Food Sculptures Badge Connection: Step 2 Make a savory snack Prep Needed: Gather materials and supplies. Wash and cut assorted fruits and veggies. Assorted, washed and cut fresh fruits and vegetables Paper plates and napkins Sink and soap to wash hands or hand sanitizer 1. Using the fruits and veggies, have girls make a funny face, cute animal or crazy shape on their plates. 2. Have girls share their creations with a friend and enjoy! Activity #4: Snack Chat Badge Connection: Questions link to multiple badge steps 1. While enjoying snack, here are some things for girls to talk about: Have you ever made snack for yourself? Where does the food you eat come from? How can you tell if a snack is healthy for you? What can you do to stay safe in the kitchen? Do you prefer sweet snacks or salty ones? Does your family eat any special foods or snacks during holidays or celebrations? Wrapping Up Optional: Make New Friends printed on poster board 1. Instruct girls to get into a Friendship Circle. Have girls stand in a circle and cross their right arms over their left, holding hands with the person on each side of them. 2. Sing Make New Friends. Make New Friends Verse One Verse Two Verse Three Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That's how long, I will be your friend. You have one hand, I have the other. Put them together, We have each other. 3. After the song, ask everyone to be quiet. 4. One of today s Badge Buddies should start the friendship squeeze by gently squeezing her neighbor s hand with her right hand. Then, that girl squeezes with her right hand. One by one, each girl passes the squeeze until it travels around the circle. When the squeeze returns to the Badge Buddy who started, she says, Goodbye Sister Girl Scouts and the girls unwrap and face outward instead of inward. 5. Optional: Have girls make a wish after their hand has been squeezed and before they pass the squeeze along. Girls can also put their right foot out into the circle when they receive the friendship squeeze, so that everyone can see it travel along the circle.
