RESTORING CANADIAN ARMY IDENTITY SITREP 04 28 April 14 See also SITREP 03 issued 12 Dec 13

SITREP OVERVIEW Restoration of Canadian Army (CA). Since the 2011 restoration of the names of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Canadian Army (CA), and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) our Army s historic identity continues to be restored by our Government. CA Badge. Our day-to-day badge is now the historic device we used during and after WW II (see right). Traditional Names. Non-traditional names like Land, Branch or Area are now reverted back to traditional names like Army, Corps and Division. Corps. Our traditional Corps names have been restored, for example the Infantry Branch is once again the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. Divisions. Our former Areas are now Divisions: 2 Div CA (SQFT), 3 Cdn Div (LFWA), 4 Cdn Div (LFCA), and 5 Cdn Div (LFAA). LFDTS has been renamed Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre (CADTC).

SITREP OVERVIEW NCM Rank Names. QR&O 3.01 is currently being amended to legally restore the proud trade names of our pre-1968 Corps soldiers: (English / French) Trooper/Cavalier, Gunner/Artilleur, Bombardier, Master Bombardier/Bombardierchef, Sapper/Sapeur, Signaller/Signaleur, Fusilier, Guardsman/Garde, Rifleman/Carabinier/Voltigeur, Colour Sergeant/Sergent Fourrier (Foot Guards), Craftsman/Artisan; plus Ensign/Enseigne (Foot Guards). These names are informally used now but they will soon become official once again. Members of the CRPG/GPRC program will be called Ranger/Ranger. NCM Rank Insignia. There will be NO changes to our pattern of NCM rank insignia. The WO crown rank on the CADPAT will be larger and all CADPAT slip-ons are available in high visibility thread as stocks of low visibility run out. Officer Rank Insignia. During late-summer (on order), all CA officers across the CAF will put up the restored rank badges on all orders of dress in the pattern of our former Canadian Army.

DIVISION FORMATION PATCHES The CA has introduced a 2 x 3 Division patch in wool melton to be sewn-onto the left shoulder of the DEU tunic. Division formation patches will be arriving at the CDSGs of our four newly named Cdn Divs in the next 30 days for distribution to tailor shops. New 1 Cdn Div patches will follow this summer. You will receive direction locally from your chain-of-command. 1 st Canadian Division HQ 1 Cdn Div 2 e Division du Canada 2 Div CA 3 rd Canadian Division 3 Cdn Div 4 th Canadian Division 4 Cdn Div 5 th Canadian Division 5 Cdn Div

DIVISION DISTINGUISHING FLAGS Soon, you will see Division flags flying on your buildings. CANFORGEN 045/14 CMP 021/14 211506Z MAR 14 authorized the Divisions (and non-manoeuvre formations) to locally produce their flags at non-public expense. GORGET PATCHES These traditional rank insignia of the general staff will be worn by Army Generals and Colonels on all DEU orders of dress. Gorget patches replace the crossed swords for these officers. Physician, Dentist, and Chaplain Colonels and Generals will wear their own traditional colour. ADH 265 CF Dress Instructions new Figure 3-5-1 will show how to sew-on and clip-on these gorget patches. Gorget patches are not worn by Cols-in- Chief, Cols Comdt, Cols-of-the-Regt, or Hon Cols. They wear collar dogs to represent their units/corps. CA BUTTON The CA is re-introducing our traditional button based on our CA historic badge. Once again, this button will be worn by all CA personnel who DO NOT have a distinctive Corps or Regiment button. Colonels-to-Generals will wear CA buttons. Senior appointment/key position CWOs will wear CA buttons. Sizes will be: DEU tunic front closure (30 line). DEU breast pocket (26 line). Gorget patch (20 line). Head dress (20 line). Officers will get these buttons from Logistik Unicorp with their issue of rank badges. Senior CWOs and all CA personnel who DO NOT have a distinctive Corps or Regiment button may order an initial issue of these CA buttons from their Logistik Unicorp account after 1 July 2014.

OFFICER RANK ON ORDER CA Officers will put-up their traditional rank insignia. The insignia is based on the pre- 1968 Canadian pattern which has continued to be worn by the Ceremonial Guard on Parliament Hill and many Reserve Force and Regular Force units on various orders of dress. Our CA pattern of stars and crowns is shared by Commonwealth Nations. ADH 265, New Figure 3-2-1

OFFICER RANK ROLL-OUT Step 1 - Officers Update their Logistik Unicorp (LU) Account. A CANFORGEN has been issued on 28 Apr 14 telling all CA officers to go to their LU account and complete a questionnaire to update their home address, update their tunic size, and indicate if they require CA buttons for their DEU tunic. Step 2 - Jun/Jul 14 Distribution. Once officers complete the questionnaire, they become eligible to be pushed a tunic to their home address with one complete set of metal rank badges, pinning-on instructions, one spare pair of devices, 3 pairs of DEU slip-ons, and they will be eligible to draw CADPAT high visibility slip-ons and unit/corps flashes from local Clothing Stores when they become available after 15 Jul 14. No LU account points will be deducted but officers will not be eligible to draw another new tunic from 1 Apr 14 to 30 Jul 15 without special approval. Priority will be given to OUTCAN officers. Step 3 On Order late Summer 2014. On the same day and not before, all CA officers will put-up the new rank on all orders of dress. This date will be around the 100 th anniversary of the start of WW I.

OFFICER RANK Mess Dress. The CA embroidered sew-on rank was restored to No. 2 Mess Dress uniform on 5 Dec 13 by CANFORGEN 194/13. All Officers are strongly encouraged to change. DEU Slip-ons. Three pairs of DEU slip-ons will be pushed to officers by Logistik Unicorp with their metal rank devices for the DEU tunic. These slipons will have CANADA embroidered-in but the CA will continue the present practice of sewing-on unit or Corps flashes. DEU slip-ons will come with the traditional pre-1968 coloured background border of the Corps described in SITREP 03. Officers will wear these slip-ons on the DEU shirt, sweater, and outerwear jackets.

PINNING-ON & TAILORING DIAGRAMS Officers can go to the web-site below to print-off a copy of detailed pinning-on instructions for the metal rank badges for the DEU service dress tunic. Officers can go to the web-site below to print-off a copy of detailed tailoring instructions for the embroidered rank badges for No 2 Mess Dress. No 2A White Tropical Mess Dress. With the exception of General Officers, please note that metal rank devices are worn on a white shoulder strap with no braid for OCdts-to-Cols. To see detailed diagrams for tailoring and pinning-on CA officer rank, go to http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/en/newspublications/new-uniform-gallery.page

WARRANT OFFICER versus MAJOR CADPAT is the only uniform where there could be potential confusion between the WO and Major rank. Consequently, the WO rank on the CADPAT slip on will be larger and centered on the slip-on. The Major rank will be smaller and lower on the slip-on. The RCN and RCAF will amend their crown insignia accordingly.

CORPS SHOULDER TITLES/FLASHES CORPS Available in Fall 2014 Metal Shoulder Titles will be available in Clothing Stores in the patterns to the right. Soldiers will receive one pair of Corps metal shoulder titles and they will have their choice of English or French. CADPAT Corps/unit cloth flashes in hi vis thread will also be available from Clothing Stores in English or French. Your chain of command will tell you when you can draw your 3 x CADPAT high visibility flashes you will receive as initial issue. All Corps metal shoulder titles and CADPAT flashes are provided publicly. ENGLISH RCAC RCE RCCS RCIC RCMS RCDC RCEME FRENCH CBRC GRC CTRC CIRC SSRC CDRC GEMRC RCAC and RCIC soldiers will continue to wear their own regimental metal shoulder titles and CADPAT slip-on flashes.

IMPLEMENTATION SUMMARY The following slide details the TIMELINE for the CA identity changes. The CA is now using our historic WW II badge as our symbol. Our Divisions have been renamed and they will soon be wearing and flying their Division formation patches and flags. QR&O 3.01 is being finalized to restore our soldiers traditional rank names. During late Summer 2014, on order, officers will restore their traditional rank insignia. This Fall 2014, our renamed Corps will have their traditional metal shoulder titles with high visibility flashes. Our CA will soon fly a new flag based on our restored historic badge. This same badge will eventually be featured on a new CA command pocket badge. Your questions are welcome to Patrick Bryden, G1 Heritage, 613 415 7707
