12-789.fm Page 2 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM INSTALLING BATTERIES You need two AA batteries to power the radio. For the best performance and longest battery life, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Battery Ribbon (illus) Battery Compartment Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow, and lift off the cover. 2. Install the batteries on top of the battery ribbon and as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and ) marked inside the compartment. Notes: You must insert a battery into the lower compartment before you insert one into the upper compartment. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. 3. Replace the cover. Note: If the radio operates erratically and cannot receive strong FM stations, replace the batteries. 2

12-789.fm Page 3 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM PLAYING THE RADIO (illus) 1. Set VOLUME to its lowest setting. 2. Set OFF/FM/AM to FM or AM to turn on the radio and select the band. 3. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. 4. Rotate TUNING to tune to the desired station. To turn off the radio, set OFF/FM/AM to OFF. Note: For better reception of FM signals, fully extend the antenna. For better reception of AM signals, rotate the radio. 3

12-789.fm Page 4 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM USING THE EARPHONE To listen in privacy, you can plug the supplied earphone, or any pair of headphones with a 1 /8-inch plug, into the PHONE jack. The built-in speaker automatically disconnects. (illus) Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use earphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. 4

12-789.fm Page 5 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM Traffic Safety Do not listen to the radio while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some earphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP Slide the belt clip over your belt or waistband to carry the radio everywhere you go. (illus) To remove the belt clip from the radio, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the belt clip s screws. 5

CLEANER 12-789.fm Page 6 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM MAINTENANCE Your Radio Shack AM/FM Pocket Radio with Mono Earphone is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for your radio so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the radio dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Use and store your radio only in normal temperature environments. Handle your radio gently and carefully. Keep your radio away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe your radio with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Modifying or tampering with your radio s internal components can cause a malfunction, invalidate its warranty, and void your FCC authorization to operate it. If your radio is not performing as it should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. 6

12-789.fm Page 7 Wednesday, July 7, 1999 11:13 AM FCC Information Your radio might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating properly. To determine whether your radio is causing the interference, turn off your radio. If the interference goes away, your radio is causing it. Try to eliminate the interference by: Moving your radio away from the TV or other radio. Contacting your local Radio Shack store for help. If you cannot eliminate the interference, the FCC requires that you stop using the radio. 7
