COURSES OFFERED General criteria for the organisation of Doctoral Program courses CREDITS The three-year program leading to the doctoral degree requires each student to acquire a total of 180 credits. These credits are subdivided according to the following criteria: - 40 to 55 learning credits from level I, II and III modules, external workshops and courses. This number is established by the Faculty Board for each doctoral program; - 5 learning credits for the English exam (IELTS); - 120 to 135 credits for research work culminating in the doctoral dissertation. The credit value of the courses is as follows: 5 classroom hours = 1 credit/student COURSES Level III courses The Doctoral School offers level III courses of interdisciplinary interest, as described in a catalogue published in the website of the School. The PhD students are required to obtain at least 40% of the required credits by attending level III courses provided by the University, including the "excellence teaching courses". Each Doctoral Program may require its students to attend particular modules deemed of special relevance to the cultural sphere of the Doctoral Program itself. The credits from such required modules cannot exceed 40% of the total number of course credits envisaged. The remaining credits can be freely selected by the doctoral student, with the prior approval of the Faculty Board. Before the credits are assigned on a definitive basis, the student must take a final test (attending a course is not sufficient to entitle the student to the relative credits). This final assessment results in a positive or negative judgment, the student is NOT given a grade. Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 1

The "excellence teaching" courses are part of level III courses and are offered by the Doctoral School and mentioned online: http://didattica.polito.it/scudo/eccellenza.html. Since these courses are approved during the year, the PhD students are required to add them in their workload after their publication. In the absence of the certificate establishnig the passing of exam, the student s proficiency will be verified by the Faculty through an interview and/or submission of a written report. The operational modalities are described in the Annex attached to this document. Level II and I courses In order to make up for knowledge deficiencies, doctoral students may select modules from first and second level degree programs, not to exceed 30% of the total number of course credits to be acquired, with no more than half of this 30% share coming from level I courses, always with the prior approval of the Faculty Board. In exceptional cases, subject to the approval of the Academic Board, the limit of 30% can be raised up to 40%. The value of the aforementioned modules in terms of credits/student will be as declared in the Manifesto degli studi ( Faculty Syllabus ). For the acquisition of these credits, the doctoral student must take a final examination (attending the course is not sufficient per se to acquire a credit). For this examination the students are given a grade, according to the regulations governing these modules. To the intents and purposes of the Doctoral Program a grade of 18/30 or higher corresponds to a favourable assessment. The operational modalities are described in the Annex attached to this document. English language test The doctoral students must prove they know the English language at a level corresponding as a minimum to a IELTS score of 5 or an equivalent score (PET Pass with Merit TOEFL 210 FIRST CERTIFICATE). Other certificates may be accepted only on the basis of the conversion factors specified by the University Language Centre (CLA), and approved by the Executive Committee of the Doctoral School (ScuDo). The certification shall entail the awarding of 5 credits, which will be recorded by the Level III Education Unit. Courses and Workshops at organisations external to the University Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 2

The doctoral students may obtain credits by attending courses and workshops at organisations external to the University (with the prior approval of the Faculty Board) to complete the number of credits for the training. In this case too, the value in terms of credits/student is: 5 classroom hours = 1 credit/student For the award of these credits, the doctoral student must submit to his/her coordinator a certificate of attendance and successful outcome of the exam. In the absence of the aforementioned certificate, the student s proficiency shall be assessed by the Faculty Board or the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program through an interview and/or submission of a written report. The operational modalities are described in the Annex attached to this document. Conferences and symposia Participation in conferences, symposia and the like does not other than in exceptional cases entitle the student to any credit. At the time of a student s admission to the following year or the final examination, the Faculty Board shall assess compliance with the regulations described above. Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 3

Annex to document General criteria for the organisation of Doctoral Program courses OPERATIONAL MODALITIES Level III courses The teachers in charge of level III courses shall: 1. compile the lessons register. Once completed, this register, which can be downloaded from: http://www.didattica.polito.it/scudo/modulistica/registro_corsi_2008.pdf, shall be delivered to the Doctoral School. The School shall send a copy to the Dean of the Faculty of belonging of the teacher in question, for a correct computation of the work load of the teacher concerned; 2. compile the register of exams (yellow or red cover), which is similar in every respect to level I and level II course registers (green cover). This register may be collected from the Department s Secretariat for Teaching Activities. The doctoral students must print the exam report form to be handed in when they are assessed for proficiency in the subject of the course taken. This assessment results in a positive or negative evaluation, the student is NOT given a grade. Level II and level I courses The teachers in charge of level I and level II courses who have doctoral students interested in taking their course shall register the exam report form of the student in the register of the level I or II course (green cover). As in the case of students attending the first or second degree courses, a grade is given according to the modalities envisaged for such modules. To the intents and purposes of the Doctoral Program a grade of 18/30 or higher corresponds to a favourable assessment. Courses and workshops at organisations external to the University Having verified that the final exam has been passed, the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program, or a person appointed by the latter, through his/her page in the Academic Portal, checks and verifies the number of credits obtained by the doctoral student. Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 4

DOCTORAL STUDENTS COURSE LOAD DEFINITION MANUAL All students enrolled in the Doctoral School may define their Work Load via ad hoc Self-service boxes or using the sid@home procedure that can be recalled from the Academic Portal. In either modality, upon opening the home page, the student must select the CaricoDidattico (Course Load) menu item, as shown in the figure below: Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 5

This opens a form listing the specific modules available and containing a grid where you can enter the modules that you want to include in your Course Load. You can select the modules, one at a time, and by clicking the METTI (PLACE) button move them to the Course Load grid. Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 6

In order to enter modules from the set of level II courses, launch the Moduli aggiuntivi (Additional Modules) section by clicking the ALTRI (OTHERS) button. In this section you can search for the module(s) you are interested in, by specifying the relative code and clicking the CERCA CODICE (FIND CODE) button, as shown in the figure: Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 7

As an alternative, you can specify part of the name and click the CERCA DESCRIZIONE (FIND DESCRIPTION) button: In either case, when the desired module has been retrieved, the salient data are displayed (code, description, CFU), and you can include it in your Course Load by clicking the AGGIUNGI (ADD) button: Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 8

By clicking RITORNA VIDEATA INIZIALE (BACK TO HOME PAGE) you may go back to the main form and confirm your Course Load by clicking OK : Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 9

Before saving the data, you will be asked to examine a summary form showing the modules included in your Course Load. By means of the OK button you may then confirm the data entered on a definitive basis. At the end of the process, a pop-up appears to inform you that the operation has been completed successfully: Politecnico di Torino Unita' Formazione di III Livello 10

Courses and Workshops at external organisations The courses and workshops taken at external organisations must be registered via the Academic portal according to the following procedure: 1. at any time in the course of the year, the student enters the data regarding the activity he/she has completed. The data required are: description of the activity, date, the number of credits (CFU); 2. the students submits the documentation regarding the activities to the Faculty member in charge. The latter, either personally or through a person appointed by him/her, marks as accepted the activities documented, using an ad hoc option available in his/her page of the Academic Portal; 3. the activities shall appear in the certificates only after this last step. Warning The free activity entry function is not yet available on the Portal. Instructions on how to use this function will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
