Partnerships Profitable partnerships To successfully reach your goals, you need reliable partners. Which is why Flughafen Zürich AG is a keen advocate of strong, mutually beneficial partnerships based on fairness and respect. Flughafen Zürich AG s main customers include airlines, licensees and commercial partners. As a domestic carrier with an international hub, Swiss International Air Lines enjoys a unique position at Zurich Airport: it is Flughafen Zürich AG s biggest customer. Also important, however, are the numerous tenants taking full advantage of Zurich Airport s well-developed business infrastructure. Flughafen Zürich AG needs reliable partners such as air traffic control, police, customs, ground handling and cargo companies. Other partners include safety and security specialists such as the fire brigade and other emergency services. Flughafen Zürich AG maintains an open and fair business and partnership relationship with its suppliers. Our government agency partners occupy a special position in the communities around Zurich Airport as well as in the Federal Administration. Flughafen Zürich AG has also entered into strategic partnerships with Switzerland Tourism, Zurich Tourism, Swiss International Air Lines AG and the Swiss Museum of Transport with a view to supporting each other s marketing efforts. We also maintain a very close relationship with the authorities at federal, cantonal and municipal level. A special place is accorded to the City and Canton of Zurich, both of whom have a participating interest in our company, with a shareholding of five and 33 1 3 percent respectively. Economic significance Important economic engine Zurich Airport is an important economic engine for both the region and the country, and a competitive factor for Zurich and for Switzerland s exports. The airport also caters for the mobility needs of residents and visitors. Zurich Airport is home to approximately 280 companies employing over 25,000 people in a wide variety of occupations. Zurich Airport and its partners are major employment generators for the Canton of Zurich and neighbouring regions. All of the companies with units at Zurich Airport together generate annual gross added value of around CHF 4.4 billion. A further CHF 1.7 billion is generated indirectly by the businesses which supply products and services to these companies. Zurich Airport and its partner companies account for approximately seven percent of the Canton of Zurich s annual income of CHF 86 billion. It is also worth mentioning the added value that arises when the employees (and investors) of these airport-based companies spend their income, since this results in additional added value of CHF 7.2 billion. Tourism is one of Switzerland s most important export sectors. In 2013, it generated export revenues of CHF 15.6 billion more than five percent of Switzerland s total income from exports. Every third visitor to Switzerland arrives by air. The rapid growth in the Asian long-haul markets in particular is accelerating the trend for visitors to arrive by air. The Swiss hotel industry recorded a total of 35.6 million overnight stays in 2013, including over one million at Zurich Airport. Airfreight is an integral part of the export-led Swiss value chain. A third of all exports by value leave Switzerland by air. Similarly, a sixth of all imports to Switzerland by value arrive by air. In 2013, Zurich Airport handled 74 percent of the total volume of Swiss air cargo or 419,000 tonnes. Almost the entire volume of freight is carried in passenger aircraft, which provides the airlines with significant added value. The availability of passenger flights at Swiss airports is therefore directly related to cargo volumes. 72 of Switzerland s 100 largest companies are located within a 100-kilometre radius of Zurich Airport and benefit from its proximity. Because of the strength of the Swiss export sector, many companies depend directly or indirectly on the air traffic hub at Zurich Airport and the direct connections it provides to the world s major business centres. Finance Sound finances Strengthening our financial base and boosting added value play an important role in Flughafen Zürich AG s strategy. Doing this requires sustained profitability and disciplined risk management. Finance Capital market viability Value enhancement It takes regular investment to keep reinvigorating and expanding Zurich Airport. But we can only invest if we are profitable and have the financial resources to do so. Flughafen Zürich AG generates profits from both the Aviation flight operations and the Non-aviation segment. In addition to ensuring the profitability of our business, we also have to manage the company s financial risks. These are constantly evaluated and appraised by our Risk & Compliance Management department. As well as fulfilling the terms of our licence mandate and ensuring the prudent management of all matters related to safety, regulatory compliance, ecology and social needs, Flughafen Zürich AG places particular emphasis on our capital market viability. We attach great importance to having the necessary strategies in place to make the business attractive to investors and the capital markets, despite the often very complex investments that put great pressure on our balance sheet. Quite apart from their profitability, the high level of use of the airport facilities is worthy of mention. The Airport Value Added articulates the commitment of Flughafen Zürich AG to its shareholders. Taking due account of the regulatory framework and licence mandate, the senior management team remains committed to delivering a sustained increase in shareholder value. 18
Frameworks Key frameworks Flughafen Zürich AG is obliged to consider a host of different frameworks. We deal with these responsibly and professionally and ensure transparency by tailoring our message to suit specific target groups. The business of operating Zurich Airport is influenced and shaped in many important ways by political frameworks and processes. Flughafen Zürich AG maintains active contact with the various political stakeholder groups. An airport is a transport infrastructure designed for the long term. The complex political processes and administrative procedures associated with such an infrastructure can take decades to resolve. It is vital that such procedures are instituted early on, that they are supervised over this entire period, and that an open dialogue is maintained with politicians, authorities and associations. Flughafen Zürich AG places great value on maintaining the backing of the political community for the licence mandate granted to it by the Swiss Confederation, as this provides planning security and legal certainty for the company and the community. Flughafen Zürich AG communicates in an open and comprehensible way. In addition to the provision of timely and accurate information on current issues, we consider dialogue with the public to be of paramount importance. We talk to the airport s immediate neighbours, to the general public, and as an intermediary, to representatives of the media. Groups of people with an interest in doing so should be able to experience Zurich Airport at first hand. Our tailored offerings make it a very popular excursion destination and provide visitors with a greater understanding of the fascinating world of aviation. Political framework Public 19
Environmental protection Successful environmental protection Protecting nature and environment is very important to Flughafen Zürich AG. It aims to minimise the negative impact on the environment by means of technical, operational and regulatory measures. Environmental management system Environmental issues Clear goals Flughafen Zürich AG operates a large, diverse infrastructure and attaches great importance to a responsible approach to the environment. Flughafen Zürich AG is therefore committed to continuously reducing its impact on the environment. Its environmental guidelines set priorities, while the company-wide environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 ensures that all environmentally relevant processes are recorded and handled efficiently. Zurich Airport s environmental protection measures include noise management, resident protection, climate protection, air quality, resource management (energy, water, waste and waste water) and reconciling construction projects with environmental protection legislation. Around half of the airport consists of green spaces, including the Klotener Riet conservation area. It is therefore particularly important to protect the airport grounds as a habitat for rare plants and animals. In addition to the legal requirements, Flughafen Zürich AG has set voluntary, binding goals in certain areas. One of its priorities is climate protection: It aims to reduce the carbon emissions produced by Flughafen Zürich AG which have already been cut by 40 % in the last 20 years from around 30,000 tonnes today to 20,000 tonnes in 2030. In its Energy Strategy 2030 it defined clear goals to ensure a secure, cost-effective and environmentally sound energy supply for the airport in the future. 20
