Waste management organised by municipality A municipality must organise waste management for the following nonhazardous waste: Waste generated in permanent dwellings, holiday homes, residential homes and other forms of dwelling, including sludge in cess pools and septic tanks; Municipal waste generated in health care and social welfare services, and educational activities; Waste generated by administrative and service activities of the state, municipalities, parishes and other corporations and associations subject to public law, other than the municipal waste referred to in paragraph 2; Municipal waste generated on business premises, collected at the property together with the waste referred to in paragraphs 1 3; Other municipal waste collected together with the waste referred to in paragraphs 1 4 in a regional automated pipe collection system for waste, or in another corresponding collection system. In addition, municipalities shall organise the reception and treatment of hazardous waste generated in dwellings.

Regional reception points, 63 pcs Regional reception points for mixed waste Only for households, who have paid the use charge of the regional reception point. Only mixed waste generated in households can be brought to these points. Recyclable waste (glass, metal, paper, cardboard) must be sorted and taken to suitable collection points. Malpractices of reception points are still very common; eg. hazardous waste, electronic equipment, construction waste and furniture are brought to the points; people not paying the use charge Costs are covered by use charges of the regional reception points.

Glass will be utilized as a material in the structure layers of the areas and the roads. Metal is sold for raw material use. Landfill gas Digestion of organic waste in the landfill produces gas containing mainly methane and carbon dioxide. Untreated landfill gas is easily inflammable and stinking and it increases the greenhouse effect. Gas can be burned in torch or utilized as energy. The gas pumping system has been constructed in Kontiosuo Waste Centre in 2000 Most of the gas will be utilized as energy in the district heating plant of Fortum
