ARTISTRY SKINCARE GUIDE Epidermis: Protective Outer Layer Cells here are constantly flaking off and being renewed. The main cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes, which produce keratin. This tough protein is a basic component of hair, skin, and nails that helps create an intact, waterproof barrier. Dermis: Most Critical to Aging Just below the epidermis, the dermis regulates body temperature and nourishes the epidermis. The dermis is primarily composed of the extracellular matrix, a scaffolding network of fibers. These fibers, including collagen and elastin, are produced by cells in the dermis called fibroblasts and secreted into the tissue environment. 1 It s here where changes are critical to the formation of wrinkles. Subcutaneous Tissue: Protective Layer This fatty bottom skin layer helps protect the body from injury while helping to hold in body heat. Healthy-looking skin depends on the fitness of its components, especially cells, along with the proteins and extracellular matrix components these cells produce. Fibroblasts in the dermis, for instance, produce important matrix fibers such as collagen and elastin, which give skin its strength and flexibility and contribute to its youthful, healthy appearance. In the epidermis, the rapid renewal of keratinocytes is critical for the radiance of skin. 2 A driving force of visible aging is a change in the lifecycle of epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts. Cellular proteins known as sirtuins play a role in aging, too and altering sirtuin activation may delay the development of these signs altogether. Studies have shown that humans have several different sirtuins, named SIRT1. 3 In skin cells, sirtuins act as a youth switch. When the switch is on, SIRT1 helps cells repair visible damage and boosts the production of important proteins for maintaining youthful-looking skin. When the switch is off and SIRT1 activity is low, cells can t combat environmental stress to repair damage, and the production of these proteins is reduced. The Artistry Scientific Advisory Board agrees that sirtuin research has perhaps the greatest potential to positively impact skin cells and delay visible aging. GLOSSARY OF TERMS Antioxidants Substances that protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules. Cardiolipin A unique and precious lipid used in Artistry Creme LuXury and Artistry Creme LuXury Eye, which is similar to that found naturally in skin cells. Elastin Connective fiber in skin that is flexible and elastic, and helps hold tissues in place. Intrinsic Aging Refers to the damaging factors generated from within skin by the metabolic processes that occur in the mitochondria of our skin s cells. Genetics and the natural aging process control intrinsic aging. Isoflavones and Flavonoids Naturally occurring in plants, they serve as excellent antioxidants. The major isoflavones in soybean plants are genistein and daidzein. L-Carnosine A dipeptide that occurs naturally in the body. The primary function is to help scavenge free radicals. Lipids Fat or fat-like substances that are insoluble in water. Macadamia Seed Oil Natural oil that helps condition the skin after a peel treatment. 126

The skin produces various proteolytic enzymes to activate the normal desquamation process, or skin peeling. miehei mushroom extract has a strong ph dependency and is only active at ph levels below that of the skin. Peptides A minute piece of protein in a chain that increases the elasticity and firmness of the skin s cell. Proteins Biological molecules that are encoded into genetic materials. Proteins like collagen are composed of amino acids and form the physical structure of skin. Roxisomes Contain a natural botanical extract from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The extract is encapsulated in specially engineered liposomes to enhance delivery to the skin. Sirtuins Natural youth proteins shown to strengthen and extend the lifespan of skin cells.
