Gap Filler project line 5 of parisian subway 01 Contents 1- Context and need 2- System description 3- Feedback on the experiment 4- First results of running
1- Context and need 02 1.1 French law (2005-102) «Equality of rights and chances, participation and citizenship of handicapped people» In February 2008 the STIF adopted 7 priority orientations to allow people with reduce mobility to use the Public Transportation. These orientations will then serve as base to define the Master Plan for accessibility in Paris and in the surrounding area. One of these orientations was : Provide accessibility to the most important stations of the railway network (90% of the trafic in 2015 for the RER and the train) This programm is scheduled to finish in 2014.
1- Context and need 03 Espace Train 1.2 Accessibility problem (platform/train) 1. Height difference between platform and train : «We go up into the train» 2. Horizontal Gap 3. Problem with stations in a curve L Extra height of the platform, total or partial. Fusible strip if possible Require to install a retractable device filling the Gap between the platform and the train during travellers access.
1- Context and need 04 1.3 Existing platform / train device Today : access to the train is possible with a footbridge Will to have access to the train in full autonomy Strong request of associations Necessary to test an automatic device : => Gap Filler Project financed by the STIF and the RIF
1 Context and need 05 1.4 The choice : Line 5 - Italie Loop Initial gap of 65 cm -> access closed Recharging the platform with concrete has been necessary. It was possible to install the prototype in the same time
2 System description 06 1.5 Benchmarking 1. Existing gap fillers were designed for dangerous gap, but not to answer to accessibility requirements. 2. After sollicitation of different companies design and installation have been realised by a French engineering consulting firm : Bigorre Ingenierie
2- System description 09 2.2 How does it work?: An easy use : When the train arrive the mobile part goes out. No button or system to be activated A facilitated access : The device fill the gap between the platfom and the train The opening is fully automatic, it s possible to walk on the mobile part. A sound and a visual signal (a blue light appears when the train stops, but before the opening of the doors). This device is called Gap Attentiveness system. Some important points :
2 System description 10 2.3 Main functions and performances : Duration of the opening and closing : less than two seconds for 450 mm. Constant residual gap whatever is the position of the rolling stock : 3 cm Can resist to a load of 700kg/m2 People detection in case somebody stay on the mobile part during the withdrawal -> Alarm transmitted to an operator who has a video image of the Gap Filler High reliability
2 System description 11 2.4 Components Automatic system to command the Gap Filler : Activates the opening of the Gap filler, after detection that a rolling stock is alongside the platform. The mobile part is deployed before the complete stop of the train. RATP signalling system : - Allows the movment of the mobile part - Decides the withdrawal of the G.F. after the train starts Gap Filler system : Attentivness system to survey the gap: - Independant from the GF system - When a train is alongside the platform anf if the GP is not deployed it warns the travellers that there is a GAP. As soon as all conditions are completed the G. F. puts its mobile part out or in.
2 System description 12 2.5 Gap Filler functioning (particular cases) When a train does t stop at the station - If the train speed is more then 10 km per hour then the computer doesn t order to deploy the mobile part. - If the train speed is less then 10 km per hour then the GF goes out and back ; When a maintenance train cross the station - If the length of the train is different from the standard one the computer doesn t order to deploy the mobile part.
2 System description 13 2.6 Requirements for safety The system has been designed to be safe : Functions handled in a Safety Way : - If something obstruct the opening : the obstacle is detected and then the force limited. If somebody is on the mobile part : he his detected Insurance that the mobile part will nt go back during traveller access. No inopportune opening
3 Expérience feedback 14 3.1 Schedule of the Project - Project initialization in 2006 - Factory aging tests conducted from November 2006 to August 2007. - GF installation at Place d Italie station : January 2007 - Protototype tests during the day without travelers without the mobile part : from Mai to June 2007 - Prototype tests (again) during the day without travelers : January 2009 - Acceptance test : February 2009 - Starting of the system with travelers : March 2009 With the mobile part : from Mai to September 2008
3 Experience Feedback 15 3.2 Factory Tests A specific test bench has been created allowing 1 000 000 of cycle (in and out), with a load of 280 kilos distributed on six cylinders pushing on the deployed mobile part. Duration of the tests (From November 2006 to August 2007) 1000000 cycles, 8 month of testing, 30 days each month, 19 hours a day(*) => 240 days of testing Description of a cycle Opening : 2 s, Deployed position : 7 s maxi Load application : 3 s maxi The Gap filler throw was 450 mm and the test cycle was the following one : (*) The tests were not conducted all day long in order to collect the measurements and also to do the maintenance on the system.

3- Experience feedback 17 On-site installation (continued)
4 First results of running 18 4.1 The experiment : first results The system works since March 23rd, 2009 The analysis can be done for the last six month GP running GF sollicitation GP stopped 12000 8000 number of trains 10000 6000 4000 2000 0 1 2 3 4 Period 5 6

4 First results of running 20 4.2 The futur The experiment on the Parisian subway will stop in 2011 and a new one will start on RER (Regional Express Network) - Noisy-le- Grand station was chosen on RER line A. - With the same Gap Filler - Final objective : Equip the line A stations when necessary to improve accessibility of handicapped people.
