CHOOSE WELL, RIDE WELL How to choose a mountain bike ANATOMY OF A MOUNTAIN BIKE Cut through the jargon and understand the mechanical basics of bicycling Mountain bikes have increased STANCHION vastly in popularity and are used both for the actual sport and for general recreation and even commuting. Although there are several categories of mountain REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER COMPRESSION STRUT PIVOTS BRAKE LEVER TRIGGER SHIFTER CABLES FORK bikes, most people will choose from the cross-country category FRONT DERAILLEUR or the trail bike category. SPOKES The latter is the biggest seller. TYRE Apart from a mountain bike s obviously fatter tyres and flat handle-bars, the main elements to REAR DISC BRAKE ROTOR consider are: suspension, gearing, wheel size, kind of tyres and, REAR DERAILLEUR SHOCK BOTTLE BOSS FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTOR importantly, weight. LINKAGE CRANKSET CASSETTE CHAINSTAY FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER SUSPENSION DERAILLEUR GEARS GEARING SHIFTERS WHERE? Very many models are full-suspension, i.e. the front and rear wheels have some amount of suspension travel. However many riders prefer front-only suspension, with the non-suspension rear known as hardtail. HOW MUCH? Cross-country bikes usually have less than 4,5 inches (114 mm) of travel. They are efficient, lightweight, but not as rugged as trail bikes. They might be faster in races and fine for smooth trails, but are probably not up to the really rough stuff. Trail bikes have between 100 mm and 152 mm of travel and are heavier and more suitable for more aggressive trails as well as long rides like epics. In fact, a trail bike is the ideal all-round mountain bike. Bike derailleur gears are a variable-ratio transmission system involving a chain, multiple sprockets of various sizes, plus a mechanism to move the chain from one sprocket to another. Front and rear derailleurs consist of a movable chain-guide, operated remotely by a cable attached to a shifter mounted on down tube, stem or handle-bar. While pedalling, the rider operates the lever and the change in cable tension moves the chain-guide from side to side, i.e. derailing the chain on to different sprockets. The front derailleur moves the chain side to side between the front chainrings. The rear derailleur has two jobs, i.e. moving the chain between rear sprockets, plus taking up any slack in the chain. Until recently most standard bikes had a triple ring crankset and a 7-, 8- or 9-speed cassette in the rear and this set-up provided a huge range of gears. As bike weight is always a consideration, lately a doublechainring, with 10-speed rear cassettes has been added to the selection available. Shifters (also known as gear control or gear levers) select the desired gear ratio. They operate the cable that leads to the gear mechanism, which can be a derailleur or an internal hub mechanism. Shifter controls are mounted on the handle-bars or down tube or stem, with the right shifter controlling the rear derailleur and the left shifter controlling the front derailleur. Friction shifters shift from the lowest to highest gear in one motion, but with some fine-tuning. Index shifters click to various fixed stops, with no adjustment required from the rider. Some shifters are operated by twisting a ring, and some are integrated with the brake controls. See page 3 (opposite) for details of the levels of shifters on the bikes we stock. WHAT TO PACK for off-road rides Repair items Mini-pump, spare tube and tyre-patch kit, tyre levers, cycling multi-tool with Allen wrenches. All these can be easily stored in a tubby bag. Personal essentials Eye protection, water/sports drinks (bottle in cage for shorter rides, hydration pack for longer rides),snacks or energy food, sunscreen, medical info/ emergency contact card, cellphone. Dedicated cycling clothing Biking shorts/pants, moisture-wicking jersey, padded gloves, light moisture-wicking socks, jacket/vest for inclement weather, cycling shoes, bike booties (over-shoes for extra water-resistance), helmet liner and tights or leg warmers (for cold days). TRAFFIC SAFETY SAFETY CHECKS Check your bike before every ride Seat post and saddle must be tightly fixed and correctly positioned Ride with traffic, not against it Obey traffic signals, signs and road/pavement markings Get off the road when you are not moving Don t pass on the left Watch what is happening behind you (consider a mirror) Don t swerve in and out of traffic Use hand signals when necessary Wear bright/reflective clothing Use bike lights and reflective extras Make a noise if a warning is needed (e.g. a horn) Do not cut off traffic sounds with headphones Watch out for car doors opening or hazards on the ground Be alert, be predictable, be sensible Handle-bar stem must be tightly fixed Tyres must be at the correct pressure; wheels must be secure Brakes and gears must be in proper working order There must not be any play in the various assembled parts Check yourself before every ride Wear a helmet, as required by the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) Obey traffic rules Stay alert and ride with care and consideration 4

BIKE SIZE GUIDE BIKE SIZE GUIDE Bike seat height and level Your leg should be able to stretch out almost completely straight, when you are on the seat, with just a slight bend to the knee when the pedal is at its lowest position If you can put your feet firmly on the ground, your seat is too low. You should, at most, be able to stand on tip-toe. Keep your seat fairly level, not tilting downward or upward Adjust the seat forward or backward on the seat-post until you feel your weight is comfortably centred Stand-over height With both feet flat on the ground, stand over the frame Road bike: 2,5 5 cm clearance between the top-tube and your crotch Mountain bike: more clearance, about the width of your hand across your fingers Some women s bikes don t have a high top-tube, so this step can be skipped HARDTAIL AND FULL SUSPENSION MOUNTAIN BIKE rider height suggested frame size feet and inches centimetres inches centimetres bike size 4 10 5 1 148 155 13 14 33.0 35.5 XS 5 1 5 6 155 168 14 17 35.5 43.0 S 5 6 5 10 168 178 17 19 43.0 48.0 M 5 10 6 1 178 185 19 21 48.0 53.5 L 6 1 + 185+ 21 23 53.5 58.5 XL BIKE WHEEL SIZE STANDARD 26 vs NEWER 29 s PROS: Their greater ground-contact area provides better for terrain with loose stones and rocks; more tightly spaced, lower knobs for smoother terrain; or widely spaced, high knobs to use in the mud or wet. Which measurement determines a frame size? Normally it s the length of the seat-tube, measured from the mid-point of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat-tube, where the seat-post enters the frame. Occasionally it s from the middle of the bottom bracket to the point where the top tube and the seat-post meet. Some road bikes are measured horizontally from the centre of the head-tube and the centre of the seat-tube. Ask a trained sales consultant which measurement type has been used for each particular bike. Key to frame diagram TT = top tube ST = seat tube HT = head tube BB = bottom bracket ST TT Handlebar height Experiment until you are comfortable Road bike: top of handlebars should be slightly lower than the top of the seat Mountain bike: set handlebars even lower, ± 7 10 cm below the seat Hybrids and cruisers: handlebars 2,5 5 cm (or more) higher than the seat HT traction; they can roll over obstacles more easily without slowing down; their larger size gives the feeling of an extra 25 50 mm of suspension; their better handling and speed on curving turns; front wheel is less likely to lift on steep climbs; they re a better fit for taller riders; they are faster on flat ground. CONS: They are slower to accelerate; and their larger size of wheel and tyre adds to the bike s overall weight (therefore riders of s often choose a hardtail option); they are harder to handle on tight switchbacks and wherever flick ability is needed; they need more braking power to slow down; hill-climbing is more difficult; smaller riders will have to find a smaller frame (or a woman-specific frame) to overcome problems with fit. Kind of tyres Most off-the-floor mountain bikes will have tyres with tubes and with a standard, mid-depth tread pattern. However there is an argument for tubeless tyres as these can be run at lower pressure to improve ride comfort and traction, and there is no chance of pinch-flatting a tube. However tubes can be removed and replaced with about 55 g of sealant.* Naturally tyres can be replaced with true tubeless off-road tyres with reinforced sidewalls, but these add to weight. Tread patterns include aggressively knobbed patterns Weight Lighter bikes make it easier to ride up and down hills, over bumps and around tight corners. But don t sacrifice strength and durability just to save weight. Effective areas to save weight are: lighter wheels and tyres, saddle, handlebars and stem, seatpost and pedals. Guideline: for the average rider, 9 to 11 kg is an acceptable weight for a bike ridden on flatter terrain. BIKE CARE BIKE MAINTENANCE Valuable tips for keeping your bicycle in top condition Waxo Lube 125 ml Protects and extends the life of chains and cassettes Environmentally friendly and bio-degradable Also available in handy 50 ml tubes Brake Line Cleaner 400 ml Cleans disc brakes Gets rid of grease and oil deposits Acts as a sealant for metals, ceramics and rubbers Silicone Spray 400 ml Protects, lubricates and waterproofs moving parts Inhibits corrosion Also for motor-bikes, cars and camping equipment Bike Wash 750 ml Removes soil and grease from bike frames Spray directly on bike surface and rinse off with water Non-hazardous and environmentally friendly Also available in a 5 l concentrate 1. Wash smart Regular cleaning prevents trapped dirt from damaging rims or brake pads. Spray with a hose from above the bike, so you don t force water into pedals, hubs and bottom bracket. Then ideally use a spray-on bike wash with special surfactants and cleaning agents. Special brushes make washing easier and safer for bike surfaces. Clean your chain with a citrus degreaser and a specialist chain cleaning tool. Occasionally clean chain and gears with a thin, dry, stiff-bristle brush to prevent gunk from building up. Polish the frame and other relevant parts, as this helps them resist dirt and moisture. 3. Pump those tyres Soft tyres wear out much faster and can be dangerous to ride on. If your tyres look soft, you don t necessarily have a puncture. Bike tyres contain very little air, plus they are made from porous butyl rubber which allows air to seep through slowly. So road bike tyres will soften in a week and mountain bike tyres over about a month. Riding on soft tyres makes it harder to pedal and can also cause damage to rims and tubes. So check your road bike tyres before every ride and mountain bike tyres at least once a week, plus always carry a tyre repair kit, a pump and a spare tube. The recommended pressure is usually printed on the sidewall of the tyre. 2. Lube right A dirty or dry chain makes it harder to pedal, causes squeaking and can hamper shifting gear. So remember to lubricate the chain and the pivot points on your brakes and derailleurs. Don t use too heavy a lubricant and don t apply too much. When lubricating pivot points on brakes, don t get any on the brake pads. (A dry-style lube is best for brakes and levers.) With derailleurs, lubricate where the body of the derailleur moves, wiping off any excess. Remember to grease your seat-post every few months and remember to keep an oil-damped suspension system lubricated. About once a year spinning parts with bearings (wheels, pedals, bottom bracket) and the headset should be dismantled, checked and greased again. This is best done by a bike mechanic. Shock oil should also be replaced once a year. 4. Pamper your ride Store your bike indoors, not just under a patio roof where moisture in the air will still reach its metal parts. (The salt air near the sea is especially corrosive.) Ride with care, avoiding obstacles where you can. When riding off-road where rough surfaces are the norm, protect your frame, fork, wheels and components by raising yourself off the seat and bending your arms and legs like a jockey does. Also learn to jump your bike professionally, landing softly. BMX BMX BMX The heritage of bicycle motocross hails from California. For dirt, vert, park, street, flat land and freestyle, BMX is the essence of action sport. Frame material ranges from regular steel to chromoly (high-tensile steel) and lightweight aluminium (mainly for racing). BMX racing wheels vary from 16 to 26, with the most popular being the 20. Dirt jumping and freestyle wheel sizes include 16 and 18 for younger riders and 20 for most others. HYDRATION Benefits of good hydration More energy, power, endurance and calorie-burning You ll keep cooler and feel better You ll go further, faster It will shorten your recovery time Signs of dehydration Early: Dry mouth, drop in energy level Mid: Thirst Later: Cramps, headaches, nausea, dark and scanty urine Hydration tips Drink before: About two hours before exercise Drink often: Sip fluids continuously, keeping your water supply close at hand Add: Sport and energy drinks which help restore carbohydrates and electrolytes Drink after: To return your body s fluid levels to normal, which can also help with recovery Watch urine: Plentiful and clear is the rule. Dark and scanty urine is a sure sign of dehydration. To avoid over-hydration This is a rare condition, affecting chiefly triathletes and marathon runners. Sodium levels in the blood become so diluted that cell function is impaired.
