This tutorial shows you how to design menus for your videos before burning them to a disc or storing them on a hard drive. Just choose the menu layout you like best from the various templates that already come with the full version of Nero Video. Then customize the menu layout as you wish. Nero Video is available in different versions with a varying feature range. Depending on the Nero product you purchased, your version of Nero Video may be limited and may not include the full feature range. If you have a limited version of Nero Video without the features mentioned here, you can upgrade your Nero product at www.nero.com to get the full version of Nero Video with all features. Adding a Menu The following requirement must be fulfilled: You have a Nero Video project, which was created using the start screen s Create & Export menu and which includes some video clips and/or slide shows. Within this tutorial, it is the project Honeymoon.nvc. It includes two video clips divided into chapters followed by two slide shows. To add a menu, proceed as follows: 1. Open the project Honeymoon.nvc. The Content screen is displayed. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 2

2. Click the Next button. The Edit Menu screen is displayed. As your Nero project contains video clips with chapters, you will find Title and chapter menus already selected from the Menus to use drop-down menu. Thus, the chapter menus have been created automatically and are displayed within the menu overview area beneath the working area. Also, the default menu layout Orbit has been applied from the category Standard2D. 3. Select your menu layout with a mouse click. To match the video subject honeymoon, the layout EMO Hearts is selected in this tutorial. The new layout is adopted at once and accordingly displayed within both the menu overview and the working area. 4. Double-click the lettering EMO Hearts within the working area and enter the title of your video in this case Honeymoon. 5. Click the thumbnail view of one of the chapter menus within the menu overview area. The chapter menu is displayed within the working area. 6. Repeat the previous two steps for both chapter menus, entering On the Beach and At the Wishing Well respectively. 7. Click the Next button. The preview screen is displayed. 8. Try the menu out: Click all the menu entries and buttons to see whether they work as you wish. If you already liked it, you could use the Next button to display the Burn Options screen and finally burn your disc. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 3

But in this tutorial, the layout will be edited quite a bit further. 9. Click the Back button to display the Edit Menu screen again. You have added a menu and you are going to customize it as described within the next chapter. Editing the Main Menu To edit the main menu the following requirements must be fulfilled: A menu must have been added. The Edit Menu screen has to be displayed. 1. Click the Customize tab. The Customize tab is displayed. Here, you can edit the selected menu template. The Properties: Background palette is displayed by default. A pre-defined background is now selected within the Background selection list the one that is part of the selected menu template. 2. You could, of course, use any other image file, even a video file. Or, you could select just a solid color for a simple background. As the hearts of the given background match the video s subject just fine, the setting is not changed in this tutorial. 3. To add background music, select Custom from the Audio selection list, pick an audio file Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 4

from the displayed Explorer and add it via double-click to your menu. 4. You could activate the check box Fit to Audio Duration now. In this case, the music is simply replayed from the beginning as long as the menu is displayed. Using the Options button, you might also define the exact spot, where the playback should start. In this tutorial, however, a certain short part of the music should be played repeatedly. 5. Choose the length of this part using the arrows of the black input field Duration. 6. Open the Edit Background Audio window using the Options button. The blue section of the audio file displayed in its wave form marks the part to be currently played. 7. Click the black bar below the blue section, keep the mouse button pressed and move this bar together with the blue section as you wish. 8. Click OK to confirm the selection of the part you want to use and to close the window. 9. On the Interaction palette you could select colors and transparencies that should be used to display highlighted and activated buttons. Additionally, you could arrange that after a certain Delay either the playback is started automatically or the menu pages are browsed. In this tutorial, the settings given by the menu template are accepted unchanged. 10. Open the Buttons palette. 11. Display the Text-only buttons using the selection list of the Buttons palette and select a matching one. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 5

12. Adjust the font: 1. Select all menu items one after another while keeping the Shift key pressed. 2. Select a font, font size and font weight from the selection list Font. Here, it is Bell MT, 8, Bold. 13. Select Text only from the Text numbering selection list on the Appearance palette. 14. If you prefer thumbnails, click Thumbnail buttons from the selection list of the Buttons palette and select a matching set. Here, it is Frame.05.white. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 6

15. Click the Apply button. The selected thumbnails are displayed within the working area. 16. Scale down the thumbnails a bit and spread them over the heart. To do so, select one single thumbnail. A read frame with round sizing handles on its corners will be displayed around it and allows resizing the thumbnail. When you click the text within the frame, sizing handles appear on its sides al-lowing you to adjust the length of the text field. You have customized the main menu and you are going to adjust the chapter menus accordingly as described within the next chapter. Editing the Chapter Menus Now, edit the chapter menus according to the main menu. 1. Click one of the chapter menu thumbnails displayed within the menu overview area. In this tutorial, it is the chapter menu On the Beach. It is displayed in the working area. 2. Add background music: 1. Select Custom from the Audio selection list. 2. Pick an audio file from the displayed Explorer and add it via double-click to your menu. 3. Choose the length of the audio part using the arrows of the black input field Duration. 4. Open the Edit Background Audio window using the Options button and adjust the black bar including the slider to the part of the music that should be played while the currently edited chapter menu is displayed. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 7

3. Replace the background picture by a plain-colored background: 1. Select Color from the Background selection list. The corresponding selection list is displayed. 2. Pick a matching color. Here, it is dark red. 4. Adjust the chapter heading s font: 1. Select all menu items one by one while keeping the Shift key pressed. 2. Select the desired font, font size and font weight from the Font selection list. Here, it is Bell MT, 8, Regular. 5. Change the navigation buttons: 1. Select Navigation buttons from the selection list of the Buttons palette. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 8

All navigation buttons are offered in sets of three icons (previous chapter menu, next chapter menu, main menu). 2. Click the set that suits best. It is immediately displayed in the working area. Here, it is Set.11.sand. 6. To add a menu item, you need to select the check box Advanced Editing. A window is displayed to inform you about your options in the advanced editing mode. 7. Confirm using the Yes button. The navigation buttons are no longer displayed in sets but in single icons. 8. Pick a navigation button proper for a link to the next chapter menu and move it per drag & drop to a suitable position within the working area. Here it is the arrow pointed to the right Set. 11.sand. 9. To link the new navigation button to its destination, the following chapter menu, select the corresponding entry from the Link to selection list in the Properties: Button palette. 10. In this tutorial, it is the entry Chapter Menu (At the Wishing Well). 11. Add some text. 1. Select Standard objects from the selection list of the Objects and Clip Art palette. 2. Move the Sample Text object per drag & drop to a suitable position within the working area. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 9

3. Double-click the lettering and enter the desired text. 4. Adjust the font. Here, this is Our first week and Bell, 16, Regular. 12. Adjust the remaining chapter menus accordingly. 13. Use the Next button to display the preview and check whether all is to your liking. You have customized the chapter menus and you are going to finish the project as described within the next chapter. Checking the Menu Before finishing the project, you should check whether the menu works properly. The following requirement must be fulfilled: The Edit Menu screen is displayed. The check box Advanced Editing is selected. 1. Click the Check Project button on the Disc/Project palette. The menu is checked for buttons that are not linked or that overlay one another (title and/or chapters), for orphaned menu pages and for parts of the project (video clips and/or slide shows) that are not integrated into the menu. Detected issues are displayed naming the affected chapter menu. If no issues are detected, a correspondent message is displayed. You have checked the menu and now you can burn your video which contains menus. Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 10

You can burn your project as a disc, a disc image or write it to hard drive (or save it to Memory Stick or SD card) as a folder, provided there is enough space available. A disc image represents an exact replica of the project data that is needed for burning a disc. It is created by the Image Recorder. Once you have connected an appropriate disc burner to the system, you can burn disc images on real discs at any time and as often as you want using Nero Video. For further details on menu editing and burn options, refer to the manual of Nero Video available in the support section at www.nero.com. More Menu Options There are more menu templates available within the Category selection list of the Templates tab in the Edit Menu screen: Animated2D and Smart3D. Basically, you can edit these menus in the same way as it is described in this tutorial for the Standard2D menu Emo Hearts. Just try and see! Add and Edit Menus with Nero Video 11
