Many years of experience in the field of solar thermal energy show that not all solar systems work perfectly. Overheating and air inclusion in the system cause faults that can lead to long-term damages of system components. Drain Back systems developed by STI solve these problems. Due to the easy and patented principle of our Drain Back systems, air inclusion and overheating within the solar installation are eliminated. 2
System protection Safe and maintenance-free Overheating and air inclusion in solar installations can cause dysfunctions which have to be repaired by experts. To prevent those problems STI uses Drain Back systems with a patented functional principle. Modern and efficient solar installations can reach high temperatures. As a result, the following problems can occur in conventional systems: overheated glycol high pressure, steam hammering soiled non-return valves and pumps air inclusion corrosion caused by acid heat transfer fluid Air inclusion Due to permanent degradation processes in the closed solar cycle gases are released during the entire working life of the installation. This gases may cause faults that have to be repaired by experts. Overheating Overheating in the solar installation quickly leads to high temperatures in the system. Early deterioration of the glycol is the consequence. Moreover, a ph-value modification of the heat transfer medium causing corrosion in system components may proceed. Since overheating also causes high pressure in the solar installation system components are notably worn out. Drain Back systems of STI permit the mostly free combination concerning collector surface and storage tank capacity. Since no expansion vessel is required acquisition and installation costs of the whole solar installation will be reduced. The Drain Back systems of STI solve these problems and protect the solar installation permanently against air inclusion and overheating. Furthermore, the maintenance cost is reduced as well as a save operation preventing from damage is ensured. Drain Master and Drain Box are operating according to the principle of gravity. In case of standstill the heat transfer medium flows back from the collectors into the Drain Back system without evaporating. All components are prevented from damage and a failure-free operation is ensured. 3
Working principle of Drain Back systems Patented principle The patented functional principle of Drain Back systems is the innovative solution for emptying the solar system. Only the collector field and the tubes above the Drain Back system are emptied. The Drain Back systems are perfectly adjusted to the use of self-draining high-performance flat plate collectors made by STI. The Drain Back system is always controlled automatically by the solar control unit. Non-operative solar system The entire heat transfer fluid is in the Drain Back system during state of rest. The collectors are empty. Solar system in operation The system will be started up automatically in sunlight and the entire solar cycle will be filled. Storage tank entirely heated The pump will be turned off automatically when the final temperature is reached and the tank is completely heated. The heat transfer medium flows back from the collectors into the Drain Back system without evaporating. Overheating of storage tank and solar thermal system is thus excluded. 4
Capable of being integrated, modular, maintenance-free Drain Master With the modularly designed Drain Master innovative draining systems can be realised. The Drain Master only empties the collector field. Thanks to its direct position at the collector standard pumps can be used. The pipe to the storage tank can be placed at will. The Drain Master can be combined and modularly extended with the self-draining high-performance flat plate collectors of the company STI. The control is carried out automatically by the regulation of the solar control unit. The core of the Drain Master is made of stainless steel. The special design of the Drain Master ensures an easy installation directly at the collector. Furthermore, the light and corrosion-resistant case of aluminium adjusts optically to the collectors. Drain Box Capable of being integrated, central, maintenance-free Innovative draining systems can be realised with the storage vessel Drain Box. With the Drain Box entire collector fields can be drained into a central vessel. Thanks to its direct position beneath the collector field, commercially available pumps can be used. The pipe to the storage tank can be placed at will. The Drain Box is as well as the Drain Master optimally adjusted to the combination with the selfdraining high-performance flat plate collectors of STI. The Drain Box permits the emptying of collector fields up to a surface of 50 m² into a central vessel. The Drain Box, that is available in vertical as well as horizontal design, can be installed on the floor or on the wall. 1 Solar collector 2 Drain Box 3 Storage tank The control takes place automatically by the control unit of the solar system. The company STI GmbH supports the project from A to Z from development to series production. Solar collector FKA The solar collector FKA is another premium product of the company STI. The collectors of the FKA series are distinguished both in three sizes and in vertical and horizontal design. The highly selective vacuum coated meander absorber with integrated manifold guarantees the modular construction of large collector fields and permits the usage of Drain Back systems. As a versatile collector the FKA can be installed into or onto the roof, onto bottom supports as well as wall consoles. Solar collector FINO With a surface of 1 m² and a weight of only 13.5 kg the FINO is the smallest collector of STI.
