DESCRIPTION The Senior Certificate is obtained after successful completion of Grade 12 on the Revised Senior Certificate. These examinations are administered by the Department of Basic Education, and the Certificate is awarded by UMALUSI. The Matriculation Board regulates admission to the majority of public universities. The Board is also responsible for administering the matriculation endorsement and exemption requirements in accordance with regulations. Admission to some Higher Certificate and Diploma programmes offered by some universities of technology and other institutions is determined by the individual institution. The Matriculation Board or the institution of your choice will determine whether you fulfil the requirements for tertiary education. It is your responsibility to enquire from the relevant body whether you meet the entrance requirements. PASS REQUIREMENTS The 6 subjects for the Senior Certificate must be written in the 2017 examination sitting. Pass at least five subjects, provided: Obtain at least 40% in three (3) subjects which include Home Language and 30% in the remaining two subjects. Obtain a sub-minimum of 20% in the failed sixth subject in the final examination. No immigrant concession will be granted. DURATION Your contract with Damelin Correspondence College will expire at the end of the 2018 examination sitting. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The following learners may enrol for the Senior Certificate: You are eligible to enrol if you are 21 years old and older with an incomplete Senior Certificate Grade 12: You will be required to provide a certified copy of your Senior Certificate Statement of Results as proof of having completed some subjects on the Senior Certificate prior to July 2016. You are eligible to enrol if you are 21 years old and older, and you have completed one of the following qualifications: Passed Grade 9; Completed a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) for Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET); Completed NQF Level 1; Completed Grade 10 / Grade 11; or Completed an equivalent qualification. You will be required to provide a certified copy of the qualification at this level. You are eligible if you are repeating your National Senior Certificate and you are a part-time candidate 21 years old and older, and you were unsuccessful in obtaining a National Senior Certificate after the expiry date of your School-Based Assessment requirement. Your National Senior Certificate Statement of Results will be required. If you are an out-of-school learner 18 21 years old, who could not complete your school education and wish to further your education and training, you must obtain approval from the Provincial Head of Education. An official letter from the Department of Basic Education indicating approval will be required. ASSESSMENT You will have to submit assessments to the College for marking. The marks for these assessments do not count towards your final examination mark. However, you are encouraged to complete and submit all of your assessments, so that tutors can give you feedback regarding your progress. EXAMINATIONS The examinations for the Senior Certificate (Revised) are administered by the Department of Basic Education. You must register for the Senior Certificate (Revised) examinations by 25 September 2016 at the latest in order to write the June/July 2017 examinations. You will have to write the examinations for all the subjects that you enrolled for with the College in the June/July 2017 examination sitting. Enrolment with the College and registration with the Department of Basic Education for the external examinations: Please note that enrolment with the College and registration for the external examinations are two SEPARATE processes. You must be registered for the Senior Certificate examinations with the Provincial Department of Basic Education. Each Provincial Department of Education will have its own registration process for these examinations. The Provincial Education Department will allocate a designated examination venue for exam sittings. You can speak to a student consultant for additional assistance. CERTIFICATION Upon successful completion of the external Senior Certificate examinations, you will be issued with a Senior Certificate by Umalusi.
