Laptop Computer Scheme 2011 Rugby School requires that all pupils entering the E & F Block have a wireless laptop computer. 1. Details of the scheme We very strongly recommend that this laptop computer is purchased through the Rugby School scheme as it will be fully tested and configured both for the individual and the network. Pupils will therefore be able to make immediate and full use of the extensive Rugby School wireless network and its resources including necessary core Microsoft software and access to software used in lessons. More importantly, we are only able to give support and advice through a dedicated technician to users of laptops purchased through the scheme. In the event of a breakdown under the warranty agreement machines are generally repaired within 24hrs except weekends. In the rare event of a computer being returned to the manufacturer a spare may be offered subject to availability. These services are not available to other users. Although basic laptops can be purchased for less, we feel confident that the overall cost of the Rugby School package offered through Dell is very competitive and will enable on-going support to your son/daughter through the Rugby School scheme. 2. Suggested laptops We have selected two options listed below. Both laptops are robust, powerful and light previous year groups have identified that the weight in particular is a very important factor. Each laptop has a high specification and we feel confident it will meet the demands of both the Upper and Lower Schools for at least 3 years or more if treated with respect. However, should you choose to purchase an alternative laptop computer and not one offered as part of the agreement with Dell then the specification should reflect that of the two models shown overleaf. 3. No cheques can be accepted by, or forwarded to Dell by the school Private laptops will not be serviced until all the work needed to configure and distribute laptops purchased through the School scheme has been completed. Support to private laptops will be available after the 3rd week of the Advent Term. Delivery Deliveries will be made Direct to the school from Dell and pupils will be instructed, at the beginning of term, when and where they can collect them. On receipt, pupils will sign a form that accepts responsibility for the delivered goods. Pupils will be given advice (and a Rugby School booklet) on the care of their laptop computer. 2

Option 1 Dell Latitude E5420 Our opinion is that this is a robust, if slightly heavy machine but is up to coping with the everyday rigours of life at Rugby. This highly durable laptop is stylishly armoured top to bottom with a hard-wearing Tri-Metal design, including an anodized brushed aluminium display back, reinforced steel hinges, a magnesium alloy internal frame and zinc alloy latches. The Latitude E5420 is also equipped with a protective LCD seal, 360-degree bumper for added screen protection and a spillresistant keyboard. Which we believe with care should last. Option 2 The Latitude 13 This is an extremely lightweight and stylish machine but is lacking in some of the features of the E5420. Being more lightweight and portable it be worth considering for the more senior members of Rugby School as its design may mean it is not sufficiently robust for younger members. Insurance The insurance operates worldwide. For damage/loss whilst at Rugby School the claim can be processed through the IT Department. Requirements for Laptops which are not purchased through the School Scheme It is possible to use a laptop at Rugby which hasn t been purchased through the school scheme. However, it is very important that it meets various criteria so it is fully compatible with the school network. Before purchasing any such laptop, please read the following carefully. 6. Laptop Hardware: The hardware specification (processor/memory drives) should be of a standard capable of running the current versions of Windows and Microsoft Office. A wireless networking capability (802.11n/g) is essential. 7. Operating System: The operating system software must be an English Language edition of Windows 7 (Business or Ultimate). Apple laptop computers with the latest Intel processors can be brought onto our systems provided that they have Windows installed (see above for suitable versions) either in place of, but normally in addition to, the Apple OS. This must be achieved by using BootCamp (a free Apple product included with the latest OSX). Experience has shown that we are unable to provide a configuration/connection service if a third party product such as VMware Fusion or Parallels is used to install Windows. BootCamp and a suitable version of Windows must be purchased and installed on the Apple laptop before submission for the integration service. Computers not running the windows operating system are offered no access to the school systems & internet. Parents should keep this in mind if purchasing a new laptop. 8. Applications Software: Software installed and correctly licensed must include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint are essential) which is used in teaching and coursework preparation. Other essential Windows educational software used in teaching/learning may be installed via our Intranet (our Intranet/internet service requires Internet Explorer v7 or later. 9. Integration Service: For laptop computers which have not been purchased through the School scheme (but which meet the conditions set out above) we offer a limited configuration and integration scheme which includes (i) configuration for wireless network access (ii) configuration for Internet and email (iii) installation of Sophos anti-threat client software (other anti-virus and similar software will be disabled or uninstalled). We are unable to offer other software installations and/or upgrades, but some educational software may be installed through our Intranet. 6

This service is on a best efforts basis and is chargeable at a cost of 100. In the event of reinstallation of software by a repair centre, a charge of 25 for re-configuration is made. If the laptop is a replacement then the full 100 is applicable and is chargeable (based on a Technician s time and Windows/Sophos client licences). We can offer no further on-going support or replacement service (other than advice) once the laptop is tested and returned to its owner. Because the technicians will be fully committed to preparing and distributing laptops purchased through the School scheme, during the first week of term this service will not be available until the 3rd week of the autumn term. Any laptop with illegal/unlicensed software installed, will be refused connection to the Rugby School network & internet. 7
