Tips Of The Trade (Color Mixing Tips) Test colors in YOUR icing base as all colors will vary according to each formula. Ingredients that will affect or alter color in icing: Lemon extract Non-dairy whipped topping Heavy concentrations of butter or any other oils and extracts Non-Fade colors: To make colors more brilliant mix Non-Fade colors first, then add a second similar color. If Non-Fade Purple is too dull, add Violet to spark the color. If Non-Fade Ribbon Pink needs a punch, add Deep Pink to enhance and brighten your icing. Adding the second color gives the non-fade benefits with a punch of enhanced color. Airbrush Colors: Black - Adding a few drops of Violet to the spray will take away green tones. This also works with Black Piping Gel. Red - For a brighter, less brick-toned red, mix equal amounts of Super Red Airbrush Color and Deep Pink Airbrush Color. Custom colors - When mixing a custom Gel Paste color, also mix an Airbrush Color to match. Coloring fondant - it s easier than it looks! Before mixing the entire amount, do a color test. Mix a small ball of fondant to your desired color. Use Gel Paste for adding color to fondant. After adding color to fondant, let it rest for at least an hour before rolling. This allows the color time to set. Adding too much color to fondant will weaken it. Fondant can easily be sprayed for more intense and truer colors. Any hand-made flowers, drapes, etc. should be colored or sprayed ahead of time and left to rest. Be sure to wear gloves to prevent fingerprints! Using Black Gel Paste to make grey fondant? To prevent purple tones add a little Leaf or Forest Green. Liquid Whitener - what do I use this for? Create a faded look in colors. A night sky with an over spray of Whitener will create a dramatic mystical or outer-space appearance. Spraying Whitener on top of another color will tone down and soften a color that is too bright. For lighter icings, add color to Whitener (not Whitener to the color). Piping Gels: Great for adding color enhancement - especially water or mirrored looks!
