Logistical Information In this file you will find logistical information on : 1. How to get to the city centre: A. from the main airports, Venice Marco Polo Airport and Treviso Canova Airport B. from the bus terminal and the car parking area, Piazzale Roma C. from the railway station, Venezia Santa Lucia 2. How to get to the Summer School venue: VIU, San Servolo Island Please note that the public water transport system, once you have arrived in Venice, can be quite complex and initially quite difficult to understand. It is our intention to facilitate your arrival with the following information. 1. A Arriving at Venice Marco Polo Airport Venice Marco Polo Airport is approximately 14 Km from the Venice city centre and is connected to the city by vaporetto (water bus), water taxi, bus and road taxi. WATER TRANSPORT For all forms of water transport leaving Venice Marco Polo Airport, you will need to walk through the white tunnel for 10 minutes, immediately outside of the main exit on your left. The tunnel takes you to the water taxi and Alilaguna water bus landing docks. From Venice Marco Polo Airport to Venice by Water Bus The Alilaguna water bus leaves at least once every hour. Tickets can be bought on board or from the Alilaguna Desk in the arrival hall, located behind the news-stand. There are 4 Alilaguna lines: 1. BLU line stopping at: Murano, F.ta Nove, Lido, S. Zaccaria and St Mark s Square. It runs from 6.10 in the morning till 24.10. Tickets are 12,00. 2. RED line stopping at: Murano, Lido, Arsenale, S.Marco, Zattere. It runs from 9.15 to 19.15. Tickets are 12,00. 1

3. ORANGE line stopping at: Murano, Madonna dell Orto, Rail Station (Guglie), Rialto, Sant Angelo. It runs from 9.55 to 17.55. Tickets are 12,00. 4. GOLD line stopping at: S. From Venice Marco Polo Airport by Water Taxi A water taxi from the airport takes you directly to your hotel (or its nearest landing area). Prices are based on the number of people in the taxi and they can vary after 8 p.m. and on Sundays and holidays. The price is approximately 100,00 for up to 4 people from the airport to the city centre and the journey time is approximately 30 minutes. ROAD TRANSPORT From Venice Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal by Bus The number 5 ACTV bus travels between the airport and Piazzale Roma - Venice bus terminal. It leaves from the platforms outside the arrival hall. The journey time is approximately 25 minutes. On weekdays and on Saturdays regular departures between 05:10 and 23:10 every 15/30 minutes. Further departures at 4.08, 24.10, 1.10. On Sundays and public holidays regular departures every 30 minutes. Further departures at 4.08, 24.10, 1.10. The ATVO Express coach service (blue bus) from the airport to Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal departs approx. every 30 minutes with a journey time of 20 minutes. Tickets ( 3,00 including luggage) can be bought at the ATVO desk in the arrivals hall, located behind the news-stand (see at http://www.atvo.it/eng/airport.php?ld=mappa_aeroporto.ihtm&id=0&var=v) from 8.00 to 24.00 or at the vending machine outside the airport. The bus departs in front of the main airport terminal in the second lane on your right from the main exit. It runs from 8.20 in the morning till 23.40. From Venice Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal by Road Taxi A road taxi from the airport to Piazzale Roma costs approximately 30,00. In order to take a taxi go to the Cooperativa Radio Taxi Office, located behind the news-stand or go directly in front of the main airport building and on your left you will find the Taxi Rank. Road Taxis are available 24 hours a day. Other Services Available in Venice Marco Polo Airport Banks, post office, car hire, exchange office, shopping, hotel reservation desk, tourist information desk and the Alitalia ticket office are available inside the Venice Marco Polo Airport. 2

1.A Arriving at Treviso Canova Airport Treviso Canova Airport is approximately 41 km from Venice and is connected to the city by road taxi, bus and train. ROAD TRANSPORT From Treviso Canova Airport by Bus to Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal ATVO buses run between the airport and Piazzale Roma and are in connection with departures and arrivals of the flights. The cost is 6,00 for a one way ticket and 10,00 for a return ticket, valid 7 days (luggage included). Tickets can be purchased at the ATVO ticket office in the arrival hall (http://www.atvo.it/airport.php?ld=mappa_aeroporto_treviso.php&id=0&var=t). The journey time is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes in good traffic conditions. Remember to validate your ticket before departure. You will find road taxis available in front of the airport terminal. From Treviso Canova Airport by Train to Venice Santa Lucia railway station The number 6 ACTT bus provides the service from Treviso airport to the Treviso railway station. The cost of a ticket is 1,00 and can be bought in the arrival hall (tickets are also available on board but the cost is 2,00). On weekdays and on Saturdays the bus runs every 30 minutes from 6.09 to 22.15 but on Sundays and public holidays runs every hour from 7.28 to 22.15. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes and leave outside the arrival area of the airport. Trains from Treviso railway station leave every 30 minutes, from 5.07 till 23.45. Journey time is around 35 minutes and tickets cost 2,35. Please note:that the railway station in Venice city centre is Venice Santa Lucia and not Venice Mestre (situated on the mainland). 3

1.B Arriving by Road to Piazzale Roma-Venice Piazzale Roma is the bus terminal and parking area in Venice. Parking facilities are available at Piazzale Roma. You may take a water taxi or use the public water bus service in order to arrive at your destination within the city centre. Water Taxi From Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal Taxis are available 24 hours from Piazzale Roma. You will find the water taxi rank on the waterfront between the vaporetto (water-bus) stops and Piazzale Roma. The taxi company in Piazzale Roma is Cooperativa Veneziana and the cost of a taxi from Piazzale Roma to the city s centre is approximately 90/130. Public Water Transport From Piazzale Roma-Venice bus terminal The vaporettos, or public water buses, run 24 hours a day, less frequently after midnight. A number of lines travel on different routes, throughout the city. You will need to buy a ticket before boarding. Tickets cost 6,50 for a one way journey and allow travel on all services (except for route 3, Alilaguna, Clodia and Fusina) for 60 minutes from validation of ticket; stop-overs are allowed only if travelling in the same direction. This do not include the return journey. The transport of one luggage item of up to 150 cm 2 is included in the price. If you board without a ticket you must request one from the sailor or the attendant. Alternatively short term season tickets can be bought from the water bus-stop landing area. They allow unlimited travel and all the services can be used both on water (exceptfor route 3, Alilaguna, Clodia, Fusina) and on land that provide urban services within the municipality of Venice (land service on the Lido and in Mestre): 12-hour ticket: 14,00 24-hour ticket: 16,00 36-hour ticket: 21,00 48-day ticket: 26,00 36-day ticket: 31,00 Remember to validate your ticket before departure. The boat lines leaving from Piazzale Roma are: Number 1 - a route running from PIAZZALE ROMA to VENICE LIDO. This boat is the slower route and it stops at every stop along the Grand Canal (Ferrovia, Riva De Biasio, S. Marcuola, S. Stae, Ca D oro, RIALTO, S. Silvestro, S. Angelo, S. Tomà, Ca Rezzonico, ACCADEMIA, Giglio, Salute, S.MARCO (Vallaresso), S. ZACCARIA, Arsenale, Giardini, S. Elena, LIDO). Number 2 - a circular route going throughout Venice, leaving in two directions from PIAZZALE ROMA. Anti-clockwise to PIAZZA SAN MARCO stopping at TRONCHETTO, the GIUDECCA ISLAND, ZATTERE, SAN GIORGIO and stopping at Piazza San Marco (S. ZACCARIA). Clockwise going through the Grand Canal stopping at FERROVIA, RIALTO, ACCADEMIA and and finally arriving Piazza San Marco (VALLARESSO). Number 41 - a circular route going around the Island of Venice, not going through the Grand Canal, stopping at THE GIUDECCA ISLAND, S.ZACCARIA, GIARDINI, F.TA NOVE, MURANO, F.TA NOVE, FERROVIA and back around to PIAZZALE ROMA. Number 42 - a circular route going around the Island of Venice, not going through the Grand Canal but going around the north of the island, stopping at FERROVIA, F.TA NOVE, MURANO, F.TA NOVE, GIARDINI, S.ZACCARIA, THE GIUDECCA ISLAND and back round to PIAZZALE ROMA. Number 51 - a circular route not going through the Grand Canal, stopping at ZATTERE, S.ZACCARIA, GIARDINI, LIDO, F.TA NOVE, TRE ARCHI, FERROVIA and back around to PIAZZALE ROMA. Number 52 - a circular route not going through the Grand Canal, stopping at FERROVIA, TRE ARCHI, F.TA NOVE, LIDO, GIARDINI, Piazza San Marco (S. ZACCARIA), ZATTERE and back around to PIAZZALE ROMA Number 61: a route travelling between Piazzale Roma and the LIDO, stopping at ZATTERE, Piazza S. Marco (S. ZACCARIA) and GIARDINI. 4

There are many landing areas at Piazzale Roma, so be sure to ask before you board the vaporetto that it is going in the right direction. For further information on the vaporetto services within the city centre please check the ACTV website http://www.actv.it/english/home.php CAR PARKS Piazzale Roma: all garages are open 24 hours a day, all year round L'Autorimessa Comunale A.S.M. S.p.a. (http://www.asmvenezia.it/index_eng.html) is the Venice's biggest car park with 2,300 parking spaces, an automatic entry system which reads number plates and two hundred 24hours close circuit cameras that monitor all levels. There is a 24,00 fixed rate charge for parking up to 24 hours. Sant'Andrea car park (http://www.asmvenezia.it/index_eng.html), located just behind Piazzale Roma, has only 132 park spaces and charges 4,50 for every two hours. It s the ideal solution for those who neeed to park for a short period. Garage San Marco S.p.A (http://www.garagesanmarco.it), also located in Piazzale Roma, charges 20,00 for 12 hours and 26,00 for 24 hours. Tronchetto - open 24 hours a day, all year round After crossing the Ponte della Libertà bridge, before arriving in Piazzale Roma, follow the signs to the Tronchetto island car park (http://maps.venicexplorer.net/maps_venezia/mappe_venezia_b.php?hlangs=it). Tronchetto island car park has about 3,500 parking spaces and charges a fixed rate of 18.00 for up to 24 hours. You can easily reach Venice from Tronchetto by taking the ACTV boat, number 2, which brings you to the heart of the city or by taking the ACTV bus, line 6/, that brings you to Piazzale Roma. Alternatives on the mainland S. Giuliano car park (http://www.asmvenezia.it/index_eng.html) is on the mainland, just before the bridge leading to Venice. There are 800 spaces and it is open for 24 hours. Charges are 4,00 for all day. The Garage Stazione car park, located in Mestre just in front of the railway station, has about 500 parking spaces and costs charges are from 5,00 for up to 6 hours. Warnings Do not be fooled by illegal touts offering to arrange parking and hotels, they are professionally dressed and very convincing. Do not leave valuables in the car. There is a luggage deposit office, open daily 8 am-8 pm, next to the Pullman Bar on the ground floor of the municipal garage at Piazzale Roma. 5

1.C Arriving by Train to Venice Santa Lucia Train Station There are two railway stations in Venice: Venezia - Mestre and Venezia - Santa Lucia. Venezia Mestre is the stop on the mainland before arriving to Venice city centre. If your train only travels to this destination you will need to change here in order to continue your journey to Venezia - Santa Lucia (this is the central train station for Venice). On leaving the train station you will be able to take the public water transport to the rest of the city. The water-bus stop at the train station is Ferrovia. Water Taxi From Venice Santa Lucia Railway Station Taxis are available 24 hours from Venice Santa Lucia railway station. You will find the water taxi rank on the waterfront. The cost of a taxi from Venice Santa Lucia railway station to the city s centre is approximately 90/130. There are many landing stages at Ferrovia, so be sure to ask before you board, that the vaporetto that is going in the right direction. For further information on the vaporetto services within the city centre please check the ACTV website http://www.actv.it/english/home.php or http://www.hellovenezia.it, a very informative site about Venice. 2 Arriving to the Summer School Venue Isola di San Servolo VIU The public boat to the Island of San Servolo can be found on the Riva degli Schiavoni - the promenade located to the left of Piazza San Marco (facing the waterfront), in front of the Hotel Londra Palace and Pensione Wildner. The boat stop is the last on the quayside and is called San Marco, Monumento Vittorio Emanuele (M.V.E.). The public boat to San Servolo is the boat line 20. Tickets and Ticket Costs The journey time from San Zaccaria to the San Servolo Island is of approximately 10 minutes. It s only one stop and a limited one-way non-resident's ticket costs 2,00.
