Honor Societies The following honor societies are offered at Melbourne Central Catholic High School: French National Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta National Art Honor Society National Honor Society National Speech and Debate Honor Society Quill & Scroll Rho Kappa Honor Society Science National Honor Society Spanish National Honor Society Thespian National Honor Society Tri-M Music Honor Society Students who wish to be considered for membership to any of these Honor Societies must complete an by Friday, February 5, 2016. Membership is open to sophomores and above who meet the membership criteria. Any student who wishes to be considered for National Honor Society membership must have a minimum 3.8 cumulative weighted grade point average. Any student wishing to be considered for specialized subject honor societies must have a minimum 3.5 subject specific weighted grade point average and a minimum cumulative weighted grade point average (see pg. 4-5). Students will only be considered for those Honor Societies indicated on their membership form. A principal-appointed Faculty Council will use the information provided for selection. Detailed information on membership requirements can be found in this membership form. Prospective members will need to print membership forms. Please complete all sections. Failure to complete all required sections will result in denial of membership. Type all essays and clearly print all membership form information and submit it by the published deadline. Do not be modest. Every bit of information will be used by the Faculty Council to assist with the fair consideration of your candidacy during the selection process. Completion of this form does not guarantee selection. Should you have questions about this form, please contact Mrs. Terry. It is a good idea to keep a copy of this form as it will NOT be returned to you. The completed membership application is due to the Front Office by Friday, February 5, 2016. Please review the membership qualifications and check the appropriate box next to the honor societies in which you are interested in applying. Quill and Scroll: Must have a minimum 3.5 weighted cumulative GPA Currently enrolled in a minimum of Honors English 2 or AP English Language; seniors must have already completed both courses Honor Society Service Requirement: To remain a member in good standing, MCC requires honor society members to complete service hours. Required hours depend on the individual society. All societies require tutoring. Members must complete the following: National Honor Society requires 15 hours of service. A minimum of three hours must be earned from tutoring and two hours must be earned teacher help. 10 hour of service are required for each other honor society, with a maximum of 25 hours per member per semester. A minimum of three hours must be earned from tutoring and two hours must be earned from teacher help. If you belong to NHS and one or more additional societies, the maximum service hours are 25, with a minimum of three hours of tutoring and a maximum of two hours of teacher help. No more than one hour will be given for bringing materials/making donations. All service/tutoring hours must be approved by an honor society advisor prior to event to be eligible for credit.
Section C: The following sections must be completed : Leadership Positions List all elected or appointed leadership positions held in school, community, or work activities. Only those positions in which you were responsible for directing or motivating others should be included. For example, elected officer for the student body, class, or club; committee chairperson; team captain; newspaper editor; work area manager; or other community leader. Please include the name of the adult responsible for supervising your leadership in each position. These can be individual or group service projects completed either in or out of school. Generally speaking, service activities are those that are performed for or on behalf of others (not including immediate family members) for which no compensation (monetary or other) has been given. Please ask an adult supervisor who can verify your participation in each activity to sign on the appropriate line, and also list the estimated number of hours you invested while performing this service. Section D: Essays Please complete the essays required for all applicants, as well as each essay that is required for any honor society to which you are applying. Please type the essays and attach them to the application. REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS: A. Explain why you want to be in each honor society to which you are applying. B. An honor society expects its members to be role models, not just scholastically but socially and behaviorally. How would you help further this cause in and out of the school environment? C. ALL honor societies require a service component which INCLUDES peer tutoring. Are you prepared to make this commitment and how do you feel it will help other students? In addition, you must also complete the following for each honor society to which you apply: French: A. Why do you think it is important to study French? B. Write a 100+ word essay in French about yourself and your study of the French language. If you have had to use the French language outside of your school studies, please share your experience. Mu Alpha Theta: A. Write a short essay on how your involvement in Mu Alpha Theta will improve the MCC community. In what ways will you exemplify the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character if you are accepted into the National Mu Alpha Theta? B. List math courses that you have taken and ones in which you are currently enrolled. National Honor Society: A. As a prospective member of the NHS, you will be asked to decide upon an NHS Chapter leadership/ service obligation. Please describe your plan of action to help your school, community, or nation. Your proposal could be a specific plan to raise money, to volunteer, to promote awareness, or any other creative solution you can offer. Rho Kappa and Science Honor Society: A. List social studies courses that you have taken and ones in which you are currently enrolled. National Art Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society: A List visual arts or music courses that you have taken and ones in which you are currently enrolled. Spanish: A. Why do you think it is important to study Spanish? B. Write a 100+ word essay in Spanish about yourself and your study of Spanish. If you have had to use the Spanish language outside of your school studies, please share your experience. Quill and Scroll: A. What will you be able to contribute to Quill and Scroll? B. Write a letter to Mrs. Herschbach convincing her why you should be a member.
Section E: Recommendations Please provide a minimum of two recommendations from your teachers. Both should be from a teacher who knows your ability and character. If you are applying to a specialized honor society, you must have at least one recommendation from a teacher in that area. If applying to more than one specialized honor society, you may need additional recommendations. Please give only the recommendation page to the teacher.
