Desktop virtualization: Implementing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with HP What is HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure? Virtual Desktop Infrastructure from HP is a desktop replacement solution designed to move the more disaster prone and business critical components of an end user computing device (hard drives, corporate data, applications) to a virtualized layer within the data center and replace them with a more secure, highly available and easier to manage access device at the user s work area or anywhere the user is connected. This desktop can be acted upon by policies to vary the degree of control, security, and personalization. Items such as connection brokers can be used to insure continuity of service and customization of the environment to the user or to enable a concurrency ratio that involves running fewer virtual machines than users. HP VDI can be scaled to include high availability and disaster recovery at the server and storage levels, which can help insure uptime, data security and data integrity. VDI offerings from HP HP s end to end capabilities with VDI allow us to structure VDI as more than just a piece-meal solution. Our offerings are distinct, supported and save you time and money with regards to implementation and long term management. Each of HP s offerings, Basic, Standard and Enterprise, are differentiated by their functionality. Sizings are based on average users as defined by proofs of concept and production implementations carried out by HP. 1
Figure 1. VDI solutions from HP. Enterprise Data Protection Multi-site failover High Availability Live VM Migration Enterprise Standard Base Base VDI Base VDI is a brokerless implementation that allows end users to connect directly to a VM resource without utilizing a connection broker. This is a low cost alternative that offers many of the major advantages while trading off some enterprise features and large scale manageability. A broker can be added to enhance the manageability of the solution. While capable of supporting a variety of end users, Base VDI would normally be targeted at the following groups: Small workgroups with specific job functions and little data stored locally Business-to-business connectivity such as allowing partners access to specific resources Kiosk type implementations such as information consoles, e-mail stations for trade shows and corporate lobbies 2
Standard VDI A Standard VDI implementation adds shared storage in the form of NAS or iscsi based storage solutions such as HP StorageWorks All-in-One storage products. This may reduce the overall cost of the solution while enabling desirable, enterprise level features from VMware such as VMotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler, High Availability as well as improving availability and data protection. Standard VDI by default uses a connection broker and is thus a dynamic implementation. Customers may choose between VMware s Virtual Desktop Manager or, where graphics support or multiple remote client solutions such as Blade PCs or Blade Workstations are desired to optimize the environment, HP Session Allocation Manager (HP SAM). Standard VDI implementations are capable of scaling into the thousands of users with lower hardware costs than an Enterprise VDI implementation. However, as a rule, these implementations are optimized for less than 1,500 users as the cost of managing multiple NAS/iSCSI devices may become prohibitive in some organizations. Enterprise VDI Enterprise VDI brings an array of enterprise capabilities to the desktop. By utilizing fibre-channel based SAN and implementing fileshares for user data as a core feature rather than an option, Enterprise VDI offers the ability to architect complex disaster recovery scenarios, increase scalability and optimize the environment for security. The emphasis of Enterprise VDI is the highest levels of availability and data integrity for end user computing resources. Enterprise VDI is flexible enough to be implemented for anywhere between 200 and 10,000 or more users. The following pages show a sample bill of materials for creating a Base, Standard and Enterprise VDI implementation. Consult your HP sales representative for a full list of options including adding fileservers to allow user data to be redirected out of the VMs and enhanced support, training and configuration offerings. 3
