Why hold an Elementary Science, Engineering, and Technology Fair? Provides opportunity for development of science skills and processes as outlined in the VSC Promotes understanding of Scientific/Engineering concepts as outlined on the VSC
Provides an opportunity for authentic (real-world) hands-on research and learning Promotes development of practical communication and problem-solving skills Leads to long-lasting interest in Science and Engineering
Example of VSC Indicators and Objectives Scientific Inquiry Indicator Statement 3. Recognize the elements of a simple welldesigned investigation. Applications of Science Indicator Statement 4. Evaluate and modify designs and products based on performance.
How Will Student Achievement Be Assessed? Questions will be included in the end of year Science Assessment. Projects/racers will be assessed at the fair by specific rubrics.
Example 5 th Grade Test Item You have completed the problem, hypothesis, procedure, and results of a science investigation. Why is this not an example of a welldesigned investigation? a. you didn t list the materials. b. you didn t include a graph. c. you didn t write a conclusion. d. you didn t do a research report.
Example 3rd Grade Test Item You designed a car holding an uncooked egg that is rolled down a ramp and crashed into a wall. Your egg breaks when it hits the wall. Why do you think this happened? a. the car was dropped. b. the ramp was too low. c. the car was too wide to fit the ramp. d. the egg didn t have enough protection.
