HR Checklist for Starting Your Own Firm X Date Considerations Payroll Benefits HR Regulations Set up your payroll with the help of an accountant, bookkeeper, or banker Manage your payroll including collecting federal, state, Social Security, and applicable local taxes Meet state mandates. Ensure your insurance agent or payroll provider obtains the coverage required by your local government which may include: Unemployment compensation for eligible workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own State disability insurance, partial wage replacement for disabling, non-occupational illnesses and injuries Workers compensation coverage for medical expenses and income replacement for time lost from work for employees with workrelated injuries or illnesses Find an appropriate provider, with the help of an insurance agent or your local chamber of commerce Implement your standard benefits; working with your insurance agent to obtain basic health care, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, dental, vision, and long-term care Work with your attorney or HR consultant to help ensure you comply with all federal and state regulations regarding: Wage and hour laws Pay procedures and pay periods Exempt and non-exempt employees Regular, overtime, and bonus pay Work hours, meals, and break periods Timekeeping for administrative, IT, or operational staff Garnishments Travel time and policies
