I. OVERVIEW Built exclusively in Greensburg, IN, the Civic Natural Gas is the only factory built sedan operating solely on compressed natural gas and is the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Tier-2, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of September 2011). The Civic Natural Gas Vehicle is "America's Greenest Car" according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). It is designed and built to meet the demanding needs of fleet managers. Police Non-Pursuit: Detective, Administrative Fire: Inspection and Prevention Health & Human Services & Environmental Inspection Services. Code Enforcement Utility & Administrative Activity Fleets General Purpose Administrative Pool Car: Adaptable to all drivers. Employee Transport Environmentally the impact is substantial: Helps meet government mandates (Clean Air Act and Energy Policy Act [EPACT]) Natural-Gas Advantage an AT-PZEV vehicle (Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle) as certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Uses Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for extraordinary fuel-cost savings Reduced CO 2 Emissions (25%) Ranks highest in Environmental Performance; Global Warming Score 10 of 10 (10 = cleanest) and Smog Score 9 of 10 (10 = cleanest). And has no special maintenance requirements. Launched in 1998, the Civic Natural Gas Sedan is the only vehicle built by a major automaker in the United States engineered to operate solely on compressed natural gas. It is the cleanest vehicle of internal combustion certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), being 90% less polluting than the average gasoline-powered cars currently running on roads. As a result, the Civic GX is certified by the EPA as "Inherently Low Emissions Vehicle (ILEV). Community Honda of Orland Park Page 1
With a driving range of 210 270 miles (depending on driving conditions and habits), the Civic Natural Gas Vehicle is a dedicated natural-gas vehicle and runs exclusively on cleanburning compressed natural gas, This guarantees 100% alternative-fuel use. Some other natural-gas vehicles use a "bi-fuel" system that doesn't offer the same economic and lowemissions benefits that a dedicated system offers. The Civic Natural Gas qualifies for incentives based on the fact that it is environmentally responsible and lessens the nation's dependence on foreign oil. The Civic Natural Gas may qualify for a tax credit for eligible buyers (please consult your tax advisor for details). II. HOW NATURAL GAS ENGINES WORK Light-duty natural gas vehicles work much like gasoline-powered vehicles with spark-ignited engines. A CNG fuel system transfers high-pressure natural gas from the storage tank to the engine while reducing the pressure of the gas to the operating pressure of the engine's fuelmanagement system. The natural gas is injected into the engine intake air the same way gasoline is injected into a gasoline-fueled engine. The engine functions the same way as a gasoline engine: The fuel-air mixture is compressed and ignited by a spark plug and the expanding gases produce rotational forces that propel the vehicle. III. HONDA ENGINEERED CIVIC NATURAL GAS SEDAN Honda engineered the Civic Natural Gas to reduce maintenance costs, provide long-term reliability and meet or exceed all current and proposed emissions standards. Engine Components: The 1.8 liter, 110-horsepower, 16 valve, Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine is dedicated solely for use with compressed natural gas. The power plant features specially engineered components to take advantage of the 130-octane rating of compressed natural gas. Special high-compression pistons are connected to strengthened connecting rods bolted to a robust forged-steel crankshaft. This raises the compression ratio for power and improved throttle response that maximizes the potential from natural-gas fuel. The electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission affords smoother up and down shifts and better power output, smoother, quicker acceleration and quieter operation. Fuel Management System: Designed by Honda specifically for natural gas, the sophisticated fuel-management system precisely controls the safe delivery of pressurized fuel as it is metered to the engine. Through a two-stage pressure regulator, the 3,600 PSI in the tank is reduced to 40 PSI prior to entering the injectors. The Civic Natural Gas is equipped with an in-tank solenoid that automatically shuts off the flow of natural gas when the engine is not running. Fuel Injection System: Unlike gasoline, natural gas has no built-in lubrication. The Civic Natural Gas uses lowfriction, self-lubricating fuel injectors specifically designed by Honda to operate with natural gas. So unlike some bi-fuel systems, periodic use of one tank of gasoline to lubricate and clean gasoline-based fuel injectors is not necessary. The proprietary fuel injection system provides for long-term performance to enhance owner satisfaction and reduce maintenance costs. Emissions: The Civic Natural Gas is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle, reduces CO 2 emissions by 25% and maintains the highest Environmental Performance of any sedan. Twin oxygen sensors control the optimum fuel to air ratio and a single 3-way exhaust catalyst processes downstream exhaust, rendering an tailpipe emissions close to zero. IV. ILLINOIS ALTERNATIVE FUELS REBATE PROGRAM The Civic Natural Gas qualifies for various state and federal rebate programs. The base-line comparison is the Civic LX. The incremental cost differential is $7,500 of which 80% is eligible under the Illinois Alternative Fuels Rebate Program, up to a maximum of $4,000. Rebates are paid twice per year (June 30 th and December 31 st ), dependent upon availability of funds. More information regarding qualifying rebate programs is available on the Alternate Fuels Rebate Program are available on the Illinois Green Fleets website or at (217) 557-1441.
