Structured Degrees Structured or focused degrees are programmes that follow a set curriculum, unlike the general studies degrees mentioned above. These degrees do not involve a major; instead they include a cluster of courses around a central theme. Some of them are three-year programmes while others entail four years of study. Structured degrees are designed to produce experts or specialists in certain areas. In some cases, they lead to professional registration. The following structured degrees are offered in the Humanities: Bachelor of Architectural Studies (H) This programme provides an introduction to Architectural Design and related subjects. Graduates will be qualified to proceed to postgraduate studies in Architecture (which is accredited for the qualification of professional architects) or to other post-graduate studies such as Planning, Housing and Development Studies. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of creative work, to write an essay and complete a questionnaire. In addition, applicants must have Mathematics at Level 5 plus an APS of at least 30. BA in Biblical Studies (P) This three-year programme comprises modules which introduce students to the social context and selected literature of the Old and New Testament; engages students in the socio-political processes of the production and reception of Biblical texts and deals with the critical approaches to selected Old and New Testament texts. It culminates in an indepth study, in third year, on a special field of interest in Biblical Studies chosen by the student under the supervision of a lecturer, and examined by research essay. BA in Cognitive Science (H) Cognitive Science is a coalition of separate disciplines that together attempt to understand the nature of information processing in humans and systems. This threeyear degree is a version of the BA General studies degree (it is not a fully separate programme degree). Traditional core disciplines in Cognitive Science include: Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology. Students taking the BA in Cognitive Science will choose any two of these subjects as majors. The Computer Science major is offered on the Westville Campus. Students taking this major are also required to take Mathematics. Bachelor of Community and Development Studies (H) This programme is designed to produce qualified community development practitioners who are able to work in areas such as local government, non-government and community-based organisations, corporate social responsibility programmes and training organisations. Graduates will be equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to initiate, implement and manage community development programmes. BA in Cultural and Heritage Tourism (H)

The purpose of this degree is to produce knowledgeable and competent experts who are able to act as managers, administrators, entrepreneurs, tour operators, researchers and educators in the field of cultural and ideological debate in this interdisciplinary field of study, where heritage extends beyond historical sites and artifacts to include the environment and contemporary cultural practices. BA in Drama and Performance Studies (P) This theoretical and practical degree is designed for students interested in a career in the South African performance industry, with the majority of modules selected from the Music and Drama programmes. Admission to certain Music modules requires an audition or diagnostic test. Bachelor of Education (offered only on UKZN s Edgewood campus) If you know you want to become a teacher and have your heart set on teaching, the Bachelor of Education (Bed) degree is the perfect qualification. It is a four-year, vocationally specific, professional degree that integrates, from the first year, both the academic study and the professional preparation required to become a teacher. Successful completion of the programme qualifies the student for registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) and for employment in South African schools as an educator at REQV 14 level. In addition to serving as an initial qualification to teach, successful completion of the degree provides students with the opportunity to continue their study of education at a postgraduate level. The following five BEd specialisations are offered: Early Childhood Development, including Foundation Phase Foundation and Intermediate Phases Intermediate and Senior Phases Senior and Further Education and Training (FET) Phase Further Education and Training Phase BSocSc in Geography and Environmental Management The Geography and Environmental Management programme enables students to understand, assess and provide solutions to environmental problems. This interdisciplinary programme is structured around a core of Geography, Environmental Science and Environmental Management modules. The focus on environmental management is complemented by a range of elective modules that deepen students understanding of the social, political and historical context of environmental issues. BSocSc in Government, Business and Ethics (P) This degree curriculum is designed to combine training in the government and business fields with a strong foundation in Ethics and Applied Ethics. Participants in the programme will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of inter alia, the nature, responsibilities and values of good citizenship; the importance of intellectual probity, critical thinking and analysis; the development of innovative research and

learning techniques; the societal norms, values and cultures that shape domestic and global worlds; and ethics in the pursuit of a variety of entrepreneurial initiatives. BSocSc in Housing (H) The programme is structured around a core of housing modules, balanced with Project Management, Law and Construction studies. The programme covers various areas of expertise that are currently in demand, including but not limited to: Local and global Housing issues; Building Construction Technology; Financial Controls for Housing Implementation; Housing Policy; Project and Property Management; Commercial Law; International Perspectives; Project Appraisal; Housing Typology; Sustainability, and Infrastructure services. BSocSc in Industrial, Organisational & Labour Studies This programme provides the successful student with a critical ability and broad knowledge about the world of work, the skills of accessing and utilising information and an awareness of both the promise and fulfilment of work as well as the alienation and exploitation that for many people accompany the need to work. BA in International Studies (P) In order to fulfill the requirements of a BA in International Studies, candidates shall: obtain 128 credits in each of two core majors obtain a further 48 credits in core modules at level 2 (2nd year) obtain the remaining credits from groups A, B or C Group A (Core Majors): Media and Cultural Studies Economics Historical Science Political Science Group B: French Spanish Group C (Elective Modules): Art History, Classical Civilisation, English, Ethics Studies, Information Systems and Technology, Management, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Sociology. BA in Music (H) The BA in Music offers students an opportunity to specialise in music to a greater extent than is possible in the general BA degree. The curriculum includes both the academic and the practical study of music and is flexible so that it can be tailored to students career plans. The degree is suitable for many careers including: teaching, music technology, music journalism, community development and music research. BA in Music and Drama Performance (H) This programme has a strong practical focus in music and drama. It caters primarily for students hoping for a versatile career in performance, including fields such as: theatre,

cabaret, radio, television, or film, with a specific emphasis on the particular South African context. Bachelor of Music (H) The four-year BMus degree provides specialised professional training that combines practical work and music theory with the study of music from historical, critical, anthropological and sociological perspectives. Nine areas of specialisation are offered: African Music and Dance, Composition, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Music Technology, Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Orchestral Performance, Performance, and Popular Music Studies. Within the programme, students may take a limited number of modules other than music. BA or BSocSc in Philosophy, Politics and Law (P) The Philosophy, Politics and Law Programme is designed to provide a strong foundation for those considering a career in Law or some form of management. Students are required to major in one or more of the three disciplines. The rest of the degree comprises a structured combination of the other two disciplines as well as a few elective courses. The central core course, Ways of Reasoning, draws the disciplines together, and the programme is rounded off by the capstone module Philosophy and Society, together with the alternative final-year modules of Jurisprudence (Philosophy and Law) and Philosophy and Modern Political Thought (Political Science and Philosophy). Admission to this degree requires 30 APS, as per the requirements of the School of Law. BA or BSocSc in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (H) This degree is not available in 2012 ; its status in 2013 will be determined in due course. The disciplines of political science, philosophy and economics are closely related. Few aspects of economic behaviour are without political dimensions, and political behaviour and processes can seldom be understood without knowledge of economics. To understand and explain such phenomena adequately one needs to adopt a theoretical stance which, in turn, requires skills in conceptual analysis and abstract reasoning. There is no better disciplinary basis for such abstract reasoning than training in philosophy. This three-year programme requires that students study Political Science, Philosophy and Economics up to at least the second level. They may then choose to major in two of these disciplines, although they may be permitted to major in all three. They will normally be expected to take an interdisciplinary capstone module in the third year. BSocSc in Psychology This degree is for students with a specialised interest in Psychology and for those wanting to apply for the Bachelor of Psychology Honours in their third year. The degree involves a double major which comprises compulsory and elective modules in Psychology. Bachelor of Practical Music (H)

Students who wish to complete a four-year Bachelor of Practical Music must initially register for the Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music or for the Diploma in Music Performance and follow the Diploma curriculum for the first three years. The BPracMus is offered with the following specializations: Jazz and Popular Music, African Music and Dance, Choral Studies and Opera Studies. Bachelor of Social Work (H) The purpose of this four-year undergraduate qualification is to provide graduates with knowledge, skills, values and competencies in Social Work for practice in governmental and nongovernmental organisations including industry, education, health, and correctional services in both urban and rural settings. From the second year of study all students registered for the Bachelor of Social Work are required to register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions and are bound by the Council s regulations. Bachelor of Theology (P) The three-year Bachelor of Theology (BTh) degree prepares students either for the ordained ministry in a Christian church, or for wider engagement in society from a theologically responsible position. In the first two years, the degree introduces students to the four basic disciplines of theology, namely: Biblical Studies and Literature; the History of Christianity; and Practical and Systematic Theology. Students are then required to major in one or two of these disciplines in the third year. BA in Visual Art (P) The BA in Visual Art is a three-year degree with a full programme of studio-based courses and Art History. The practical curriculum includes drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking and computer graphics. Level three students may work using flexible interdisciplinary methods. Recent graduates are following careers in education, design, animation, museology and illustration. Although most candidates have studied art for matric, those who have not done so are welcome to try introductory courses. Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music (H) This is a three-year programme that specialises in Jazz studies, Music Technology and Music Education. Diploma in Music Performance (H) This three-year programme concentrates on music performance. Students who successfully complete all the first-level modules may convert to a degree the following year. Practical courses (instrument lessons and ensembles) are the same for diploma and degree students, and some of the requirements for the BMus or BA degrees are available as electives. Students must complete one of the English language modules. Humanities Extended Curriculum Programme (BSS4) This is a four-year degree with an extended support programme for students from disadvantaged schools who are South African citizens. It is part of a BSocSc degree and provides entry to students who do not have a matriculation endorsement or do not

have the required points to obtain direct entry into the degree. The programme builds advanced language proficiency and academic literacy, skills in numeracy, computer literacy, and the knowledge base required for degree studies. At the same time, by means of weekly counseling workshops, it introduces students to campus life and to study expectations, heightens career awareness, and promotes a wide range of study skills. Students who obtain an overall APS point score between 20 and 27 are eligible for this programme. Music Foundation Programme and Certificate (H) The Music Foundation Programme is a broad-based, self-funded programme that provides foundation work for all music students. It provides a preliminary year of study for students who cannot be admitted to a degree or to either the Diploma in Music Performance or the Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music. Students who have already been admitted to diploma or degree study but who need remedial work in one or more areas, may register for one or more of these modules. Completion of this programme does not grant automatic access to further study. (H) = offered only on Howard College campus (P) = offered only on Pietermaritzburg campus Unmarked degrees are offered on both campuses
