THE YEAR IN NUMBERS BY MICHAEL T. GIBBONS Engineering degrees increased at all levels during the 24-5 academic year. This trend has continued at the bachelor s and master s levels since 1999. Doctoral degrees increased for the third consecutive year. This recent spurt has helped the United States recover from a decade of non-growth that began in the early 199s. Bachelor s degrees awarded in engineering are back to the levels seen during the late 198s. This holds true even when accounting for the greater number of computer science degree recipients from engineering colleges in recent years. At the bachelor s level, 73,62 students received engineering degrees, about 7 more than last year. The computer science portion of that total dropped by 8 percent to 8,419. Similarly, master s degrees increased by just over 8 from 23-4 to 4,65 in 24-5. The Ph.D. level saw the largest growth, where doctoral degrees grew to 7,333, an increase of 27 percent since 22. Enrollment data indicates that this trend has probably peaked. Bachelor s and master s enrollments are both down for the second consecutive year. Growth in doctoral enrollment has slowed considerably. Undergraduate enrollment sustained its high point of 375, for the two consecutive academic years beginning in fall 23 and fall 24. While enrollment has fallen by 2 percent to 366,361 for fall 25, the number of freshmen hit a five-year low of 95,75. The fact that freshman enrollment declined indicates that this trend might continue for the near term. Enrollment trends at the graduate level have diverged in recent years. Since reaching a high of 91,665 students in fall 23, master s enrollment has fallen steadily to 83,293 in fall 25. That s a decrease of over 1 percent. Doctoral enrollment grew by just over 1, from last year to 57,77. Overall, enrollment at this level has increased by 5 percent since 1999. This massive growth will continue to fuel an increase in doctoral degrees awarded through the end of this decade. Conversely, master s degrees are headed in the opposite direction. The enrollment data clearly show that master s degrees awarded should begin declining in 26. This trend will continue for the next several years. One component in the decline in undergraduate enrollment is the decreasing percentage of women enrolled. The percentage of bachelor s degrees awarded to women in 24-5 stands at 19.5 percent, while only 17.5 percent of enrolled undergraduates were women. All sources indicate that this is down from recent years. The percentages of women enrolled at the master s and doctoral levels are higher, with each standing at 22 percent. This compares well with the percentage of women receiving master s degrees (22.7 percent) and doctoral degrees (18.3 percent). In fact, women are increasing their share of doctorates. Although that share has grown only marginally from 17.9 percent in 1999 to 18.3 percent in 25, the enrollment data clearly indicates that more doctorates will be awarded to women in the near future. However, this representation may eventually be undercut by the decreasing supply of undergraduate women. The percentage of women in engineering is obviously much lower than their general share of the college population, which stands at 56 percent. Although this has focused the attention of engineering colleges, the ASEE data shows that women are selective in their interest in engineering. They are well-represented in disciplines such as agricultural, biomedical, chemical, environmental, industrial/manufacturing, and metallurgical and materials engineering. Women account for between 32 and 43 percent of bachelor s degrees in each of these fields. But, these are generally not the largest engineering fields. These six disciplines comprise only 17 percent of the total bachelor s degrees in the 22 disciplines used by ASEE. Women are less interested in the largest disciplines, including aerospace, computer, computer science, electrical, electrical/computer and mechanical engineering. Female students range from 11 to 17 percent representation in these fields. These six disciplines make up 63 percent of all bachelor s degrees. The solution to attracting more women to engineering will certainly require a review of this equation. The share of African-American and Hispanic-American students has remained low and virtually unchanged for the past decade. Despite comprising almost 25 percent of the U.S. population, these two groups earn just over 11 percent of bachelor s degrees awarded to U.S. students combined. At the master s level, African-Americans receive 4.6 percent of degrees, while Hispanic-Americans receive 5 percent. Each receives 3.7 percent of doctoral degrees. The percentage of foreign nationals receiving bachelor s degrees has remained steady at just under 8 percent. The fraction of master s degrees awarded to foreign nationals has retreated slightly from a high of 46 percent in 22-3 to 42.6 percent in 24-5. However, at the doctoral level, this portion has increased to almost 6 percent. Consequently, the number of U.S. students receiving doctorates in engineering is virtually the same as it was in the early 197s. Degree totals rose at all levels over the past six years. The fastest-growing disciplines were aerospace and biomedical, which increased their undergraduate totals by 12 percent and 137 percent, respectively. Biomedical showed the strongest graduate-level growth, notching totals of 135 percent for master s degrees and 78 percent for doctoral degrees. The largest disciplines of electrical, computer and mechanical engineering generally mirrored the overall trends and increased proportionally. Not all areas followed suit. Although civil and environmental engineering fared well at the doctorate level, these disciplines showed only meager growth for master s degrees and declined 1 percent for undergraduates. Chemical engineering bachelor s degrees continued to slide, falling 27 percent from 1999 to 25. This differed greatly from the 1 percent growth in master s degrees and 36 percent growth in doctoral degrees. Several trends remained steady in the area of tenured and tenure-track faculty. Since ASEE began collecting demographic data for the engineering faculty in 21, the percentage of women has increased incrementally each year. That percentage has grown from 8.9 percent in 21 to 1.6 percent in 25. Of course, a breakdown of this data shows stratification by employment level. Only six percent of full professors are women. That improves to 12.5 percent for associate professors and 18.5 percent for assistant professors. Similarly, Asian faculty members have grown gradually over that time from 17.2 percent to 21.1 percent. Unfortunately, African-American and Hispanic faculty member representation has remained essentially flat, with each hovering between 2.1 and 2.4 percent. More detailed data for 334 U.S. and seven Canadian engineering colleges can be found in the following 5 pages of our 25 Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology Colleges book or online at www.asee.org/colleges. Computer science (outside engineering) is not included in the grand total. Note: ASEE collected enrollment data at the department level until 24. Enrollment data for 25 was collected at the degree program level. This method is more accurate. However, some longitudinal continuity is lost between 1999-24 and 25. For example, some aerospace data was grouped with mechanical data prior to 25 because mechanical engineering departments often award aerospace degrees. Consequently, the aerospace total is much larger in 25. This effect is also apparent for some other disciplines. 4 For more information, visit the ASEE Web site at www.asee.org/colleges
