1 Temple s Salaries for Faculty are Competitive Temple University s faculty salaries are competitive. This conclusion is supported by four sets of data: 1. Comparison of AAUP data for all institutions in the Carnegie classification Research Universities with High Research Activity (Temple s classification) 2. Comparison of AAUP data for all institutions in the Carnegie classification Research Universities with Very High Research Activity 3. Comparison of Temple with the University of Pittsburgh 4. Comparison with selected regional and national colleges and universities Each of these is discussed below. It should be noted that a salary comparison across institutions is only one tool, and sometimes an imprecise one, in determining competitiveness. In the end, each institution of higher education has its own mission and market niche. Four different sets of data are presented below with the understanding that there are many ways to analyze the available data on faculty salaries. Total compensation includes not only salaries but also the benefits package. The following analyses focus only on salaries. It should be pointed out that Temple has a very strong benefit package, as indicated by a survey conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education. (See the summary article at the following website address: 1. AAUP Data for High Research Activity Institutions The source used here for comparable salary data is The Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), as published in Academe and available on the AAUP website. A subset of the AAUP data was analyzed to compare Temple with all the institutions in the peer group defined by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Temple is classified by Carnegie as a research university with high research activity. There are 103 institutions of higher education that are classified in the category of high research activity. The attached table (TABLE 1) provides salary data from the AAUP report for for all the institutions in this Carnegie category. The institutions have been sorted from highest to lowest in terms of the average salary for Professors. Analysis of the data for these institutions indicates the following: With an average salary of $121,570, Temple ranks 10 th highest of the 103 institutions (both public and private) in average salary for Professors. o This leaves 88 institutions with lower average salaries than Temple s (note: data not available for 5 other institutions in this category). Source: AAUP Faculty Compensation Survey Page 1 of 12
2 o The range is from a high of $139,860 to a low of $67,210. o It is noteworthy that 6 of the 9 institutions ranked higher than Temple are private institutions. This is significant because, according to the AAUP report, a professor in a public doctoral university can expect to have a salary that is only 76% of that in a comparable private university during (See pages 9-11 in the AAUP report for a discussion of publicprivate differentials. For the full report see: o It is also important to note that 6 of the 9 institutions that are ranked higher than Temple have endowments that are significantly higher than Temple s ($237 million). The endowments of these 6 range from $437 million (Fordham) to $1.6 billion (Boston College), as of June 30, With an average salary of $89,480, Temple ranks 10 th highest (tied with one other university) of the 103 high research activity institutions in average salary for Associate Professor. This leaves 87 institutions with lower average salaries than Temple s (with no data available for 5 other institutions in this category). Temple s rankings for the salaries of other ranks are as follows: o 17 th for Assistant Professor ($72,020), with 81 lower than Temple (no data for 5 institutions). o 14 th for Instructor ($53,970), with 60 lower than Temple (no data for 29 institutions). Temple s Average Salaries Are Competitive A Comparison with the 102 Other Institutions in the High Research Carnegie Category (Same as Temple), Number of Institutions Temple s Salaries Are Higher or Lower Than Rank Temple Higher Than Temple Lower Than No Data Available Total Institutions Professor Associate 87 (plus one tie) Assistant Instructor AAUP data for Very High Research Activity Institutions Temple s average salaries by rank may be compared with the 96 institutions in the Carnegie classification of very high research (see attached TABLE 2). The table includes the corrections/additions as reported in the July/August issue of the Academe. Temple s average salary for Professors ($121,570) is higher than 50 of 94 of the institutions in this category (with no data available for 2 institutions). Temple s average salary for Associate Professors ($89,480) is higher than 65 of 94 of the institutions in this category (no data for 2 institutions). Source: AAUP Faculty Compensation Survey Page 2 of 12
3 These rankings are relatively high in spite of the fact that Temple s total research activity (and the revenue that flows from it) is lower than the level of activity for those institutions classified by Carnegie as very high research institutions. Temple s comparison for the salaries of other ranks are as follows: o Higher than 48 institutions for Assistant Professor ($72,020), with no data for 2 institutions. o Higher than 40 institutions for Instructor ($53,970), with no data for 35 institutions. Temple s Average Salaries Are Competitive A Comparison with the 96 Institutions in the Very High Research Carnegie Category, Number of Institutions Temple s Salaries Are Higher or Lower Than Rank Temple Higher Than Temple Lower Than No Data Available Total Institutions Professor Associate Assistant Instructor The key reason Temple was classified in the Carnegie category of high research rather than in the very high research category is that its total level of research activity is lower than that of the institutions classified by Carnegie as very high research category. For example, Temple was ranked 137 th in the country by the National Science Foundation in terms of its total R & D expenditures in FY (See the NSF report at the following site: ) Temple aspires to be classified in the Carnegie category of research universities with very high research activity (96 institutions). To be on par with these institutions, Temple would need to increase significantly its total level of research activity and build its endowment to support its research initiatives. For further information on how the Carnegie Classification is determined, consult the following web site: 3. Comparison of Temple with the University of Pittsburgh It is reasonable to compare Temple with the University of Pittsburgh since both are (1) state-related universities in the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, (2) located in urban areas in Pennsylvania, (3) have comprehensive missions that include research and (4) are more similar to each other in general size and make-up of student body (e.g., higher percentage of graduate and professional student body and more diverse) than they are to Penn State, the other Pennsylvania research university in the state-related category. 4 Temple s average salary for Professors ($121,570) is comparable to the average salary at Pitt ($121,950), and Temple s average salaries for Associate Professors ($89,480), Assistant Professors ($72,020) and Instructors ($53,970) exceed the average salaries for Pitt s Associate Professors ($80,430), Assistant Professors ($67,680) and Instructors ($41,540). Temple s salaries are competitive in spite of the fact that Temple derives less revenue from three key sources: (a) external funding for research, (b) institutional endowment and (c) established tuition rates. Also, Temple pays higher rates to borrow money because of its lower bond rating. Temple lags behind Pitt in terms of total level of research activity. o According to the ranking of the National Science Foundation for total research and development (R & D) expenditures for the 2006 fiscal year (the most recent comparable database), Temple ranked 137 th nationally with $79.7 million, compared with Pitt (ranked 21 st with $530 million). o Pitt is classified by the Carnegie system as a research university with very high research activity whereas Temple is classified as high research activity. Temple also lags behind Pitt in terms of total endowment. Pitt had a $2.3 billion endowment compared with Temple s $237 million endowment as of June 30, Temple also has lower tuition rates than Pitt, and thus has a comparatively smaller revenue base from its tuition rates to support its annual operating budget. o Temple has attempted over the years to keep tuition affordable for its student base with the result that its tuition has risen less steeply than Pitt s. o The general tuition rates (with mandatory fees) charged to full-time undergraduate Pennsylvania residents are as follows: Temple: $11,448 Pitt: $13,642 (or 19% higher than Temple s) Temple s bond rating (A1, from Moody s), a central indicator of an institution s overall financial health based on independent review, is two categories lower than Pitt s (Aa2, also from Moody s). This means that Temple pays higher rates to borrow money for capital projects. (See page 2 of the presentation at the following website address: 08AEW.pdf) 4. Comparison with Selected Regional and National Colleges and Universities Temple s salary structure compares favorably with the average salaries of comparison groups of institutions in analyses conducted by Temple s Department of Human Resources. The analyses use data directly from the AAUP annual report to compare Temple with two selected groups. The AAUP data reflects average faculty salaries at each institution. The selected comparison groups are as follows: Source: AAUP Faculty Compensation Survey Page 4 of 12
5 Group One ( Regional ): 11 colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area (including Temple), along with Lehigh, Pitt, Penn State and Delaware for a total of 16 institutions Group Two ( Urban 13 ): 20 large urban universities, including Temple (all institutions associated with a group called the Urban 13, a name that still is commonly used even though the numbers have expanded). The analyses compare Temple s average salary for each rank with the unweighted average of the averages for all other institutions in each of the comparison groups. The results are as follows for the rank of Professor: Professor Temple Average Comparison Group Average Group One (Regional) $121,570 $116,310 Group Two (Urban 13) 121, ,820 The results are as follows for the rank of Associate Professor: Associate Professor Temple Average Comparison Group Average Group One (Regional) $ 89,480 $ 84,190 Group Two (Urban 13) 89,480 75,390 Attached are charts for each of these analyses. They include the names of each of the institutions included in the group. [See CHARTS 1 and 2] Please note the following in the analyses of these two groups: The institutions within each group represent a range of sizes, types and locations. The data for Temple are included in the comparison group averages. The data for ranks other than Professor and Associate Professor are provided in the attached charts. The data for individual institutions are available at the AAUP website, given above. Source: AAUP Faculty Compensation Survey Page 5 of 12
