Stockholm Health Care Guide hotline The Stockholm Health Care Guide (1177 Vårdguiden) has an official hotline at 1177 that provides advice on medical problems and guidance for medical care 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The first thing to do if you fall ill or have had an injury is to call 1177. You will be given the following options (in Swedish) when calling: Press 1: for general information about health care and contact information. Press 2: for health care advice about children. Press 3: for health care advice concerning yourself or another adult. A nurse will answer the phone in Swedish (all nurses also speak English), and will help guide you towards your nearest health care clinic/facility. You can find more information about navigating the health care system in Sweden by going to their website at www.1177.se, and then choosing your language. In case of emergency always call 112, the public emergency number. One call will put you in touch with all the emergency services, but you should only call 112 if you are in an emergency situation and need immediate help. 1(7)

Health care facilities in Sweden Pharmacy (Apotek) Swedish pharmacies handle medicine prescriptions as well as hygiene products. Antibiotics and certain medicines cannot be bought without a doctor s prescription. Prescriptions are often handled electronically. If you have been prescribed medication, ask while at the doctor s office for the nearest pharmacy with prescription services. Health center (Vårdcentral) All health centers are open weekdays during the day for advice and visits, and some are also open in the evening. Book an appointment by calling the health center. Some facilities accept drop-in visits for minor emergencies such as infections, wounds that need stitching or light burns that need treatment for example, at certain hours during the day. The first time you contact a health center, you will be asked to register at one of your choosing. Local emergency unit (Närakut) If the health center is closed and you cannot wait until the following day, you can turn to a local emergency unit (Närakut). The emergency unit can treat the same kind of health problems as the health center. Always call before a visit, in order to get advice or book an appointment. Call the Health Care Guide hotline to consult a nurse if you need help deciding how urgent your condition is. Emergency hospital care (Akutmottagning) Emergency care units at hospitals are intended for bad injuries and serious illnesses. Accident and emergency departments are open 24 hours a day. If you are not considered an emergency case, other cases will receive priority and you will have to wait, sometimes for a long time. If you do not need urgent care, you generally have a better chance of seeing a doctor quickly if you book an appointment at the local emergency unit or local health center on weekdays. Costs SEK 200 400 per visit for students with a Swedish personal identity number or students with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). SEK 1800-3200 per visit for non-eu/eea students without a Swedish personal identity number. Remember to: Call in advance to get an appointment at a health care facility Cancel the appointment in advance if you cannot go if you do not you will be charged Ask in advance for the price of your visit/treatment 2(7)

Dental care Dental care is expensive in Sweden regardless of whether you choose a public or private provider. The cost is more or less the same with or without a Swedish personal identity number or EU Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Check if your insurance covers emergency dental treatment (the EHIC only covers a minor part of the cost). In most cases, the insurance only covers emergency treatment (e.g. infections). If you need treatment beyond what is considered an emergency, you have to cover the costs yourself. Make sure to ask in advance how much the dental treatment will cost and check what your insurance covers beforehand. Generally, you pay for the treatment yourself, and then contact your insurance company for reimbursement. Be sure to save your receipts. Cancellations have to be made at least 24 hours in advance, or you will be charged a fee of SEK 750 per hour of booked time. Emergency dental care Listed below are dental clinics open 7 days a week.
