Latest News on Spanish airports Madrid-Barajas Airport changes its name Barcelona-El Prat Airport, best airport in Southern Europe The official name of the airport changed to Adolfo Suárez, Madrid- Barajas on March 24 th 2014 to honor the memory, effort and the historic role of the first president of the Spanish Democracy. Adolfo Suarez played a key role in the history of Spain. His moral and statesmanship was the key to the success of the Spanish Transition and the Democracy. His job was essential to complete one of the greatest achievements of Spain as a country: the Spanish Constitution of 1978. The Minister of Public Works announces that the airport charges will be frozen in 2015 and the current incentive scheme will be extended Gloria Rodríguez, Barcelona-El Prat Airport s Head of Cabinet Aena Aeropuertos launches the new official app for mobile devices with real-time flight information Additionally the app offers information about the Spanish Airports: services, terminal maps, Parking and VIP Lounge reservation, shops and restaurants. The app is available for ios and Android, and can be downloaded for free from here. Barcelona-El Prat airport received the award of best airport in Southern Europe presented by Skytrax in the framework of the World Airport Awards 2014 on March 26 th 2014. The airport also received this award in 2011 and 2012. Aena Aeropuertos official app The proposal means that fees will have a cero increase instead of the expected maximum increase of 4.5%. This measure, that will be in force from March 2015, is possible thanks to the cost reduction plan performed by Aena and the increase in traffic in the Spanish airport network. Aena Aeropuertos will attend the 134 th IATA slots conference that will be held in Abu Dhabi from 10 to 12 June 2014. Stuttgart and Sao Paulo Short-Haul route: Stuttgart General Overview Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. With approximately 600,000 inhabitants, Stuttgart is the sixth-largest city in Germany and the cradle of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Its airport, located in Leinfelden- Echterdingen, serves various legacy airlines and low cost airlines with direct flight connections between Stuttgart and major German and European cities. In 2013 Stuttgart connected with 13 Spanish cities*: Barcelona, Palma de Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, Fuerteventura, Málaga, Bilbao, Jerez and Alicante. German market In 2013 there were 9.9 million German tourists in Spain, 5.8% more than in 2012, what makes German the second largest tourist nationality in Spain. Additionally, Spain is the number one tourist winter destination in the Mediterranean for German people: reservations for winter season increased in 2013 more than 20% compared to 2012. Quick News Public Holidays in Spain Did you know? Bonfires of Saint John Throughout the year, locals carefully prepare the celebrations that completely transform the city s streets. The ninots, genuine satirical works of art, are placed at numerous sites all over the city. It is well worth taking a good look to appreciate these colourful and original structures, as on the night of San Juan, they will be burnt and destroyed forever in a magical ritual. Make sure you get up close to these colossal monuments wrapped in flames. This is the only way to experience the unique mystery and atmosphere emanating from the bonfires, which are the supreme symbol of the whole celebration. Market Analysis The tradition of the bonfires originated in farming communities, in which people celebrated the coming of the summer solstice by lighting bonfires around which they danced. Statistics The bonfires of Saint John are celebrated each year in many cities and towns in Spain the 23rd June, which is the shortest night of the year. The bonfires are particularly popular in Alicante, Galicia, Valencia and Catalonia Community.
