SARAH DERRINGTON YEAR OF CALL: 1990 Professor Sarah Derrington is Dean of Law at the University of Queensland and a barrister specialising in maritime and shipping law, general commercial law and arbitration. She has published in leading international journals in the field of marine insurance and carriage of goods by sea and, with James M Turner of the English Bar, co-authored The Law & Practice of Admiralty Matters (OUP, 2007). She was the co-editor of the Queensland Reports from July 2011 until May 2015. Sarah is a Director of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and of the Australian Maritime College (AMC), Immediate Past President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ), a member of the Commonwealth s Admiralty Rules Committee, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Institute of Company Directors and is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and of the Australian Academy of Law. Anglican Church Brisbane Diocese Legal Committee (from 2014) St Paul s Anglican School Council (since 2015) CAREER Sarah Derrington was educated at the University of Queensland, where she graduated, initially, with a BA (in French and German) and an LLB (Hons). After graduating, she was admitted to practice in Queensland and the ACT and worked in the litigation section of Freehill Hollingdale and Page in Canberra before returning to Brisbane to work as a Judge s Associate in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. She spent a year in the insurance litigation section of Minter Ellison in Brisbane before commencing part-time practice at the private Bar and pursuing her academic career at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1996 with an LLM and in 1999 with a PhD in the field of marine insurance law. Between 1998 and 2011, Sarah taught a variety of courses at undergraduate and post-graduate level, predominantly in areas of commercial law, with a particular emphasis on marine and shipping law. From 2003 to 2008, she was the Director of the Marine and Shipping Law Unit within the TC Beirne School of Law and was appointed Professor of Admiralty Law in 2008. In that same year, she was appointed to the position of Associate Dean Academic within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. For the period 2002 to 2006, she was a visiting lecturer to the University of Nottingham where she taught International Carriage of Goods by Sea in the LLM programme. More recently she has been a Visiting Professor to the Universities of Aix-Marseilles and Nantes, France, where she delivers seminars to students in the Master of Maritime Law and Master of International Law programmes. She has published in various journals including the Law Quarterly Review, Modern Law Review, Lloyd s Maritime & Commercial Law Quarterly, the Insurance Law Journal, the Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce and has written a chapter in The Modern Law of Marine Insurance, Vol 2 by D. Rhidian Thomas (LLP, 2002). In conjunction with James M Turner of the English Bar, she has authored The Law and Practice of Admiralty Matters (OUP, 2007), the second edition of which will be published in 2015. Sarah is the Immediate Past President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ) and continues to represent Australia and New Zealand in various international working groups of the Comité Maritime International (CMI). She is the Vice-Chairman of the Australian Maritime and Transport Arbitration Commission (AMTAC), a member of the Admiralty Rules Committee (Cth), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and of the Australian Academy of Law. She is a member of the Board of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the Board of the Australian Maritime College (AMC), the Somerville House School Council and the St Paul s School Council. In September of 2011, Sarah returned to full-time practice at the Brisbane Bar where she specialised in maritime law and general commercial law, including arbitration.

In July 2013, she was recruited back to the University of Queensland as Academic Dean and Head of the School of Law.
