1. Doing an Internship in Germany Internships in companies are usually paid and last for 3-6 months Language requirements depend on company and position Work permits for foreign students If you are still a student and doing a voluntary internship: If you come from Europe: no work permit required If you are in Germany on a student visa (or if you have a residence permit): you are entitled to work for 120 full (more than four hours of work) or 240 half (less than four hours of work) days a year. Every internship day is deducted from the 120 days that you are permitted to work by law. If you have already worked for 120 days, you will need permission from the foreigners authorities and the Agentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) to do an internship. This applies whether your internship is paid or not. To obtain your work permit, you must prove that you can support yourself financially. If you are not studying at a German university (anymore): The only condition is that your work placement should relate in some way to the subject of your course. Students who are not from EU or EEA countries need a permit from the German International Employment Agency "ZentraleAuslands-and Fachvermittlungder BundesagenturfürArbeit" (ZAV) (http://www.zav.de) to do an internship in Germany. With this "Confirmation of approval", you must apply for a visa at the German embassy/consulate in your country or for a residence permit at your local foreigners' authorities if you are already in Germany. Your prospective employer may also submit an internship application for you to the ZAV. 4

Doing an Internship in Germany Insurance Health insurance mandatory in order to take part in an internship program Student health insurance policy is sufficient If you are not registered at a German university at the time of your internship, you must take out your own health insurance. Also find out from your internship coordinator/employer before you start your internship whether and with which company you are covered by accident and personal liability insurance. 5

5. Email Application II Etiquette Generally, same stylistic rules apply as for written application! Use a proper email address which at least reveals your family name (not pinkpanther@...) Address email to a specific contact No typos! Attach only small files (max. 2 MB) Don t send your photograph separately but included in your CV Absolutely no emoticons! 37
