Orientation for undergraduate Literatures in English students A guide to the major and the minor in LIE

Planning your degree For teaching English in Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry of Education requires one of the following: A major in Literatures in English with a minor in Linguistics A major in Linguistics with a minor in Literatures in English A double major in Literatures in English and Linguistics The ELLE (English Language and Literature with Education) degree Other areas of study which complement your study of LIE include: Within Humanities: Gender Studies, Communication Studies, Film Studies, History, Theatre, Languages Outside of the Humanities: Social Sciences, Computer Science Co-curricular courses which enhance your skills and employability

Foundation courses required for the Literatures in English degree 2 academic writing courses, usually in Year 1, subject to one of the following minimum grade prerequisites: General Paper (A or B), CXC English Language (1), GCE English Language (Distinction), UWIDEC Language Skills & Communication (B), TOEFL (22), ELPT (Pass), EDMU 0005 (Pass) One of the following: FOUN 1001 English for Academic Purposes (both semesters) FOUN 1106 Academic English for Research Purposes (first semester), required for students with CAPE Communication Studies Grade 1 or 2 FOUN 1104 Writing about Literature (first semester) 2 further University foundation courses, usually in Year 2 FOUN 1301 Law, Governance, Economy and Society (both semesters) FOUN 1210 Science, Medicine and Technology in Society (2 nd semester)

Required Level 1 courses for the major in LIE 2 academic writing courses If you do not have the grade prerequisites for these writing courses, you MUST first pass the English Language Proficiency Test. You are urged to do this as soon as possible, and there are remedial courses to help you prepare. 3 introductory Literatures in English courses (both semesters) LITS 1001 Introduction to Poetry LITS 1002 Introduction to Prose Fiction LITS 1201 Elements of Drama 5 further Level 1 courses in other disciplines, at least 2 of which must be Humanities courses

Approaching your studies Lecturers and tutors provide guidance and support, but you are responsible for your own learning. Arrive at each lecture and tutorial on time, having read the set text in advance. A list of the set texts for each course is always available several months in advance on the department website and bulletin boards. Ask questions and participate in class discussions. Beware of plagiarism: Direct copying of material without inserting quotation marks Paraphrasing material without identifying the source Make use of the Writing Centre if you require help with the mechanics of English, essay writing, research and documentation.
