SAILBOAT guide ENGINES AND ACCESSORIES
GREENER boating with the d series This year, we are proud to introduce a totally new generation of D3 diesels. These new, low-emission and low- rpm engines are specially developed to suit the demanding and environmentally conscious sailboat owner. But above all, they are another example of the Volvo Penta Green Commitment. New D3 advanced and reliable The all-new Volvo Penta D3 is a robust sailboat engine for reliable performance. This compact, light engine is available in 110 and 150 hp versions, both with low 2,000 2,500 cruising rpm for better onboard comfort. Easy maneuvering, thanks to the high torque, is further enhanced by the electronic shift and throttle. Optimized fuel range With the D3 and D4, advanced trip computer functions are available. Trip distance, average speed and instant fuel consumption will help plan the trip and not least find the most fuel-efficient cruising rpm for your boat. 2
The D series for sailboats Improved performance High torque from low rpm. High-efficiency Saildrive. Patented high-thrust folding propellers. The all-new D3 is available with 110 or 150 hp. Thanks to low rpm and minimal emissions, both versions provide onboard comfort in absolute top class. This is further enhanced by the electronic shift and throttle, which of course is standard. Higher comfort Low rpm. Low emissions. Electrical stop as standard. Minimal vibrations and low noise. Smooth-running Saildrive. Smart, flexible instrumentation. Electronic shift and throttle as standard or option. Effective charging 115 or 150 A alternators. Built-in charging sensor. Low rpm high comfort The D-series engines are rated at just 2,800 3,200 rpm, which means only 2,000 2,500 rpm at cruising speed. This results in minimal vibrations and low noise levels which are further reduced with the Saildrive. Torque for sailboats Volvo Penta D-series engines deliver high torque also at low rpm. That means plenty of power and quick response to all commands. It also provides power to drive the most powerful alternators in the business. Low emissions The entire D series complies with European EU RCD and the significantly more stringent US EPA emission regulations. Reliable, simple boat ownership Robust design. Freshwater cooling as standard. Relay-activated starter solenoid. Crash absorber on the Saildrive. Electrically isolated Saildrive. Easy-to-maintain engine. Engines, transmissions and accessories from one company. 3
Robust design with proven operating reliability. Saildrive oil can be changed from inside the boat. THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE DETAILS Three-point suspended mounting gives minimal noise and vibrations with no need for alignment. Optimal cooling water intake gives minimal risk of blocked water intake. Hydrodynamically optimized design gives low drag while sailing. Patented electrical isolation of drive and propeller to minimize risk of corrosion. Crash absorber that keeps the engine in place in the event of impact. Extensive range of matched propellers. Saildrive a Volvo Penta original When introduced by Volvo Penta in 1973, the Saildrive was the only one of its kind. With all the original benefits intact and new qualities added, the Saildrive versions of today are still unique making it the most comfortable, efficient and safe package for sailboats. Streamlined folding propellers The patented Volvo Penta folding propellers offer minimal resistance while sailing, and maximum thrust while motoring an optimal combination for a sailboat propeller. With 2-, 3- and 4-blade versions for engine outputs from 5 to 120 hp, the Volvo Penta folding propeller range covers most sailors needs. Efficient charging Today s sailboats depend on electricity. To secure a steady and reliable supply of energy, all D-series engines are as standard equipped with high-capacity charging. The 115 A alternator has a built-in charging sensor that gives correct battery voltage. The D3 has a 150 A alternator. An optional, extra alternator is easy to install. Reliable starts simple stops With automatic pre-heating and the relay-activated starter solenoid, starts are reliable. Electric stop is standard on all D-series engines. Split anode that can be replaced without removing the propeller. 4
The Saildrive. The 3-blade folding propeller. The built-in charging sensor. These are just a few examples of the many Volvo Penta innovations especially created for sailboat owners. We encourage demanding sailors everywhere to compare the Volvo Penta sailing engines with other sailboat engines. The differences are obvious, particularly in all the details that provide improved reliability, performance and comfort. Freshwater cooling as standard on all engines. High-capacity fuel filter essential for reliability. High-capacity primer pump. Flexible instrumentation The Electronic Vessel Control, EVC, is a unique Volvo Penta platform that provides a number of instrumentation options. CAN-bus technology makes it possible to install multiple displays and provide access to engine data at up to four spots onboard. And with the NMEA 2000 interface, engine data can also be displayed in a compatible chart plotter. Effective intake silencer contributes to low engine noise. Durable multi V-belt with userfriendly tensioner. 115A 115 A alternator with built-in charging sensor. High-capacity hot water outlet. EVC instrument interface is available for the entire D series. Engine suspension with large damping volume boosts comfort. Rigid engine block for low noise. 5

engine accessories Folding propellers The fact that a Volvo Penta folding propeller offers up to 1.5 knots higher speed under sail compared with a fixed propeller will add greatly to your sailing pleasure. But also when cruising under engine power, the high thrust make them stand out from the competition. Thanks to the high performance of the blades, even in reverse, the propellers provide excellent maneuverability in limited areas. The patented elliptical profile (high skew) of the propeller blades ensures effective, low-noise operation with minimal vibrations and no cavitation. Since 2003, all Volvo Penta folding propellers are made of a specially developed, nickel-aluminumbronze alloy (nibral) to minimize corrosion and marine growth. Secure reliability Unclean diesel, water or microorganisms in the fuel can all cause your engine to stop or fail to start. A pre-filter and a decontaminator are efficient ways to secure safe functionality and reliability the whole sailing season, and seasons to come. Diesel fuel decontaminator Diesel fuels often contain microorganisms that can start to grow and clog up the fuel system. The fuel decontaminator solves this problem permanently. Lubrication, oil and coolant Developed to meet the specific demands of Volvo Penta marine engines and transmissions. These products work perfectly in all operating temperatures and maintain their qualities also during long periods without use. Extra alternator Volvo Penta engines have alternators that are perfectly matched to the torque of the engine to provide extra charging without losing maneuvering power. Upgrading with an extra alternator will give high-capacity charging for 12 and 24 V systems. Charging distributor For efficient charging of multiple battery banks. Power take-off For powering auxiliary equipment. Adapted to each engine series. Fuel pre-filter Efficient pre-filters protect the engine from water and particles. They are easy to inspect and clean for high reliability. Maintain powerful charging A sailboat often uses its engine only for short periods, but still consumes a lot of electricity. For increased charging capacity, there are optimized solutions for all engines in the range. INSTRUMENTATION Tachometer Provides analogue rpm readings and a digital display for additional information. Multi-information displays The 4" display and 7" color display can show a number of different data, depending on engine model and sensors. Easy to customize menus. The 7" display suits the D3 and D4. Trip computer software With the D3 and D4, full trip computer function can be added for information about fuel rate, trip time, average fuel rate, and estimated remaining time to empty. NMEA 2000 interface With the NMEA 2000 interface, it is possible to obtain engine data in a compatible chart plotter. Perfect to free up space. Separate instruments Available for voltage, fuel level, engine temperature, alarms and more. 9
