Admission Requirements Sultan Qaboos University announces its Postgraduate Programs (PhD, Masters, and Postgraduate Diploma) for Omani and international students, that will start in September 2011. The University also announces Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral programs (exemption from tuition fees scholarships, teaching scholarships and research scholarships). General 1. Applicants for programs taught in the Colleges of Science, Agricultural and Marine Sciences, Commerce and Economics, Engineering, Medicine and Health Sciences and Education (Curriculum and Method of Teaching English Language) should submit an English proficiency test result or certificate with a score of at least 550 in TOEFL or higher (or equivalent in the new versions), or 6.0 in academic IELTS, with a minimum of 5 in each of its components. Students will not be registered in postgraduate courses before they attain the required English Language level. 2. Applicants for studies conducted full-time should submit release letters from their employers for the duration of the program. Applicants for studies conducted part-time should submit no-objection letters from their employers. 3. Tuition fees depend on the specialization taken. Those accepted should submit proof of having the necessary financial support. 4. Applicants who satisfy the admission requirements will be invited to assessment interviews. 5. Ministry of Education staff in the Sultanate of Oman should contact their Ministry for nomination. No application will be considered without approval of the Ministry. Doctoral Programs 1. The applicant should have a Masters or a Medical Doctor degree from a recognised higher education institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent, or: 2. In the case of an applicant from a system not using a 4-point GPA scale, whose cumulative GPA is equivalent to less than 3.00 and above 2.75, work experience and any other academic activity during or beyond the Masters degree may be taken into consideration, subject to the approval of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and Research. 1 Page 1
3. The applicant should submit a statement on the objectives and goals for enrollment in the Doctoral program. 4. The applicant should submit three letters of references, at least two from academics, to show competence in the discipline of interest and research capability. Masters Programs 1. The applicant should have an undergraduate degree from a recognized University or equivalent institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4-point scale (B average or Very Good) or equivalent grade. An applicant whose cumulative GPA is between 2.50 and 2.74 on a 4-point scale or equivalent may be considered for a Conditional Admission. In such cases, relevant work experience and any other activities beyond the first degree may be taken into consideration to assess the applicant s potential to perform well at a higher level. Postgraduate Diploma Programs 1. The applicant should have an undergraduate degree from a recognized higher education institution. 2. A cumulative GPA of 2.50 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in the undergraduate degree; some diploma programs may require a higher cumulative GPA. 3. Any additional conditions specified by the department. General Requirements for Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Programs 1. The applicant must fulfill all acceptance conditions required by the postgraduate program (unconditional acceptance). 2. The applicant for masters scholarships should have a first degree with a CGPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent. 3. All candidates for full teaching and research scholarships must be full time students, and they must participate in academic work as stipulated the scholarships regulations. Page 2

Masters Programs taught in Arabic and English for full-time and part-time students: 1. Arabic Language and Literature 2. Translation 3. History 4. Geography 5. Mass Communication (Journalism, Broadcasting Media, Public Relations and Advertising) 6. Library and Information Science 7. Sociology 8. Social Work Additional : Candidates for the following programs must submit a proficiency certificate in English language: History and Library and Information Science (IELTS 4 or equivalent) Sociology and Social work (IELTS 4.5 or equivalent) Geography and Mass Communication (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent) Applicants for the Masters in Translation must have a postgraduate diploma in translation from SQU with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale. Ⅲ. Postgraduate Diploma in Translation for full-time and part-time students: Additional : IELTS 6.5 or equivalent with a minimum of 5 in each of the components, or TOEFL 550 will be required in each a part of the test and a score of 4 in the writing component. English proficiency certificate must not be older than two years. 15\4\2010 is the last day for submitting English proficiency certificate. Candidates who fulfill the English requirement are required to take a translation test. The translation test will be given only once during the first week of May 2011. Pass the translation test. Colleges & Programs College of Education Ⅰ. Masters Programs taught in English and Arabic for full-time and part-time students: 1. Curriculum and Method of Teaching Arabic Language 2. Curriculum and Method of Teaching English Language 3. Curriculum and Method of Teaching Islamic Education 4. Curriculum and Method of Teaching Science 5. Curriculum and Method of Teaching Mathematics 6. Curriculum and Method of Teaching Social Studies (History and Geography only) 7. Educational Administration (Full time only) 8. Educational Psychology (Learning and Measurement) (Part time only) 9. Islamic Studies Additional : Applicants should have a bachelors degree in Education in the specialization applied for, or a B.A. in any discipline with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Applicants with a Postgraduate Diploma in School Administration, Supervision, or Bachelor in Islamic Studies may apply for Masters in the appropriate specialization. Applicants from other noneducational disciplines can be considered for the Educational Psychology program, provided that they may be required to enrol in pre-requisite courses before they are admitted to the program. Applicants for the Curriculum & Methods of Teaching, Mathematics, Teaching Science, Educational Psychology, Educational Administration, and Islamic Studies Programs should pass the English test, which is held by the Language Center at SQU and achieve level 4. A minimum of one year of teaching experience for the Curriculum & Method of Teaching Science, Teaching Mathematics and Teaching English Language Programs. A minimum of two years of experience in educational or administrative work for the Masters Program in Educational Administration. Graduates from colleges specialized in Islamic sciences, the Institution of Sharia, the Islamic Institutes and Islamic Science Department at SQU can apply for the Master of Islamic Studies. Masters Scholarships A total of 9 scholarships are offered College of Commerce and Economics Ⅰ. Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program taught in English for parttime students: Additional Candidates with a nonbusiness background are encouraged to apply. They may, however, be required to take additional bridging courses to provide them with necessary background. Candidates with an undergraduate GPA between 2.5-2.99 are required to submit a Gradu- Page 4
ate Management Admission Test GMAT score of 450 or above. Candidates with an undergraduate GPA of 3 or above are currently waived from GMAT. Pass the interview. Masters Scholarships A total of 7 scholarships are offered in the form of exemption from tuition fees. College of Law Ⅰ. Master of Law Program taught in Arabic for full-time and part-time students in four disciplines: 1. Public Law 2. Private Law 3. Commercial Law 4. Criminal Law Additional : Applicants should have a bachelors degree in Law (Law Major).
