2/8 To realize mission-critical projects successfully, you need an optimal collaboration of developers, managers, customers, and other stakeholders. But due to the pressure of time-tomarket this becomes more and more difficult. One key role is somebody, who speaks and understand the language of developers, who understands and transfers interests of managers, who introduces and filters requirements of customers, who is able to prepare and make the right strategic decisions, and who has the courage, to force pragmatism and excellence. I have taken this role in different forms in several mission-critical and successful IT projects. These projects were large in each sense (hundreds of developers, millions of lines of code, Gigabytes of data, thousands of end-users,...). My role was named technical project manager or system architect. However, sometime I just understand myself as being a communication manager with excellent social and IT background so that teams are forced to focus on working software (slides, concepts, and prototypes may not prove anything). Currently, the focus is on SOA (service oriented architecture), where I am one of the few world-wide experts having significant experience of implementing SOA in practice (being a team lead of a SOA system with hundreds of services in production producing millions of service calls a day). Use my competence and experience, to find and validate the technology, architecture, and processes that is appropriate in your concrete context. Use my courage and social capabilities to force to make the right decisions and to detect problems and risks before they lead to disaster. My advantage is independence. I have no products to sell and no people to place. I have worked for domains such as Banking/Finance, Automobile/Traffic, Telecommunications, and Manufacturing as technical leader, manager, or reviewer.

Key person between SOA IT and business IT. The SOA system runs in production connecting 30 international systems with at most 400 services (about 3 million service calls per day). 2004-2005: Consulting and coaching for the maintenance and development of a CRM system for more than 30 million customers of a telecommunication company (C++, J2EE, Oracle). A mission critical system with about 200 people in the team. 2003: Project, team, and communication management during the realization of a new generation of author and editor workplaces for the world-wide development of after sales documentation (such as repair instructions) for a major German automobile corporation (J2EE, Eclipse rich client platform, BEA and WebSphere Application-Server, DB/2). A mission critical project with more than 30 developers. 2002: Review of an international mission-critical project for the bank transfer for an European ATM machine network (England, Belgium, Germany) 2001-2002: Chief architecture and technical manager in a realization of a commercial mission-critical J2EE application with mainframe integration for banking services (in time, in budget, more than 100 developers, for 50,000 end users, successful adjustment after failed first trial) 2000: System development as part of the realization of connecting backend systems to a 3-tier banking system. 1999: Technical project manager for the realization of a graphical wire management system (GIS) for the a telecommunication company. 1999: Chief architect and business consultant for the standardization of an IT landscape of the financial affairs department of a German state. 1998: Technical project manager and system developer for the realization of a typical host interface due to the switch from a 2-tier to 3-tier banking architecture (C++, CORBA). 1997: Architect and technical project manager for the realization of the central data storage and integrated graphical user interface for program to design and layout individual large compressors for pipelines etc. (Fortran, Java, OODBMS). 1995: System development and consulting for the introduction of graphical user interfaces and object-orientation of the machines controlling large knitting machines (C++, OSF/Motif, Unix). 1992: System development of BXwidgets, a supplementary library of graphical user interface elements for OSF/Motif (C, X Window System). 1990: Implementation of a training center for trainings of Unix, X, OSF/Motif, C, and C++.
