CPE Lyon ECAM ISARA Lyon ITECH International Summer School In Science and Engineering Lyon, France 3 to 30 June, 2004 A four-week program in a French Grande Ecole to improve your French language proficiency and your scientific knowledge at the same time. All the people involved made for a great experience. Paul, North Carolina State University
The Program What is the IPL International Summer School? A four-week program organised by the four IPL engineering schools that provides the opportunity for students to live and study in France, to develop language skills and experience a different cultural environment, while at the same time taking a scientific course and an undergraduate research project. What does the program contain? A course of French as a foreign language. A scientific course in one of the specialities of the IPL engineering schools. An undergraduate research project, usually literature based, in a field chosen by the student, and supervised by a member of staff. An introduction to the history and culture of Europe. Visits to industrial companies in the Rhône-Alpes region. Social and cultural visits and events. Throughout the program, from your arrival at the airport to your departure, you will be looked after by the International Relations staff of the four IPL engineering schools. Who is it for? Undergraduate students in science and engineering who have completed their first or second year of study in a partner institution of one of the four IPL engineering schools and who expect to major in one of the disciplines of these engineering schools.
Must the student speak French? It is not necessary to be fluent in French but a basic knowledge (from High School study for example) is required. Classes will be given in French. However, professors and the International Office staff are fluent in English so communication is not a problem and during the classes explanations can be given in English if necessary. What will I get out of the Summer School? This Summer School is a wonderful opportunity for you to get to know France, its culture and educational system. You will improve your French language skills, have a first experience of scientific research, and discover the Rhône-Alpes region. You will also interact with French students in your area of study. You will realise that it is possible to plan to spend a semester or a whole year studying in Lyon as part of an exchange program. This could be to attend classes, carry out a research project, or a mixture of both. There may also be possibilities of planning an industrial internship in France. Where will classes take place? Most of the program will take place on the ECAM campus, close to the city center. For specific scientific courses and for the projects, students will go the school specialised in their field of studies.
