HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR OUTDOOR GEAR? LEARN HOW TO AVOID PFCS.

People have always admired nature and hold a special reverence for mountains, even believing them to be the realm of the gods. Mountains are known for their unpredictable weather, in particular the threat of rain, snow and strong winds. That is why all mountain climbers keep their waterproof gear close in all their adventures. Jackets, trousers, tents, backpacks and other gear are needed to protect them and their belongings from the elements. In 1969, Gore-Tex developed the eptfe waterproof membrane. The weatherproof technology enables even the amateur mountaineers to enjoy their journeys, rain or shine. The material has also proved popular for city-dwellers who love the outdoors. But waterproof outdoor gear comes with a price. And by price, we don t just mean the number on the price tag. Every product we buy also has an environmental impact. Learn more about your waterproof gear and choose the perfect one for your next adventure!

DWR (Durable Water Repellent) Regular Fabric Waterproof Membrane Base Fabric Softshell Hardshell Designed for outdoor activities, softshell jackets are made with wind protection and warmth in mind. They are more flexible and breathable than hardshell jackets. Most softshell jackets have no waterproof membrane and resist water only through the topmost DWR layer. 100% weatherproof thanks to its inner water resistant membrane, hardshell jackets protect the wearer from rain and wind, while allowing for moisture to escape from inside. In addition to the waterproof membrane, hardshell jackets have an outer layer of DWR to guarantee perfect waterproofing even when the wearer is caught outside in heavy rain.

Splash resistance on jackets mainly depends on the DWR (durable water repellent) layer. The outermost layer of both hardshell and softshell jackets, as well as many other outdoor products such as tents, gloves, shoes and so on, are generally treated with a DWR coating which usually contains the synthetic chemicals PFCs. When water comes into contact with the fabric, it collects into beads and runs off the surface. it must be re-treated to maintain its water repellence.

The waterproof membrane is a thin layer of synthetic compounds that keeps water out, allowing the wearer to stay dry even in rainy and damp weather. The effectiveness of a waterproof jacket is shown by its waterproof rating; the higher the rating, the better the jacket for keeping the wearer dry. The values range from 1,500 millimeters for lighter rain up to more than 10.000 millimeters for heavy rain. For most membranes, including the market leader Gore-Tex, group of synthetic chemicals - are used to make them waterproof.

Synthetic chemicals Does not decompose Waterproof Oilproof PFCs are hazardous synthetic substances that have been used in industrial processes for over 50 years. Once released into the environment they remain there for many years and have silently invaded ecological and human habitats, living organisms, and the human body. PFCs are widely used in outdoor gear for their waterproof and oil repellent properties, most commonly in waterproof jackets but also in trousers, shoes, backpacks, and even sleeping bags. People were unaware of the harm caused by PFCs when they were first synthesized; it is now known that their resistance to decomposition and their long term accumulation in the environment and biological organisms bring potential threats to the natural environment and to humanity.

3 4 1 2 These invisible pollutants are likely to be found in your favourite waterproof outdoor gear. Once PFCs are released into the environment, they are capable of spreading everywhere. Greenpeace tested samples of snow and lake water from ten remote areas and discovered PFCs in all of them.

PFCs are everywhere; they have been discovered in breast milk, cord blood, and even the blood of infants. growth of tumours. Other research has shown that some PFCs may interfere with the function of blood serum and the liver, cause birth even lead to cancer.

If you really need waterproof outdoor gear, there are PFC-free products available and silicones. Alternatives to membranes made using PFCs are Sympatex, Paltex or Toray, for example. Some smaller outdoor companies, such as Fjällräven, Paramo, Pyua, Rotauf, and R'ADYS, already have entire collections of functional weatherproof clothing that are PFC-free. If you love outdoor activities, ask your Are you still using waterproof outdoor gear containing PFCs? You should be looking for PFC-free alternatives!

Join other outdoor lovers in the movement to Detox the great outdoors; challenge your favourite brand to go PFC-free and eliminate all hazardous chemicals from its production chain! Ask outdoor retailers and brands for PFC free gear. Some brands have PFC free alternatives, some have even started labelling their products as PFC free or fluorocarbon free. Think about what you will really use your outdoor gear for before you buy it. If it s mainly for use in the city or to go to work you don't need gear that is designed for an Arctic expedition. Help avoid the unnecessary use of chemicals buying what you really need. The most ecological products are those that are used for a long time. The production of each jacket and every tent uses resources. It s always more ecological to buy second hand products or to use the ones you already have for another year.

DETOX OUTDOOR PROJECT The Detox Outdoor Campaign is challenging big outdoor brands to eliminate all hazardous chemicals from their production and become Detox Champions instead. The goal of the Greenpeace Detox campaign is to achieve a toxic-free future for our children. We've already successfully lobbied more than 30 international fashion brands to commit to detoxifying their production. DETOX OUTDOOR But we need outdoor brands to act too and follow their example! Let's all work together to convince our favorite outdoor brands to start eliminating PFCs now and get rid of all other hazardous chemicals from their supply chains by 2020!
