4 1 Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme Welcome to the NBMR software. This file contains late breaking information. If it conflicts with any information in other printed documents supplied with the product, this should be deemed as more accurate. It contains the following sections: What's new? Overview Current Limitations Requirements Known Issues What's new? Select product version to see what's new: Version Release Date 7.3 7.2.6 7.2.4 7.2.1 7.1.2 7.1 6.5 6.4.2 6.4.1 6.3.3 6.3 5 April 2016 21 December 2015 26 October 2015 18 December 2014 4 June 2014 6 December 2013 7 May 2013 22 November 2012 31 May 2012 23 June 2011 21 February 2011 Please note: Version 7.2.5 was deliberately skipped. Overview NBMR allows quick recovery of a server or workstation running Microsoft Windows 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2 operating systems, in the unfortunate event of a hard disk failure or human error. Note NBMR supports recovery from EMC NetWorker only. Current limitations i) It is not possible to run the DR process using down-level client/server versions. For example it is not possible to recover a backup from NetWorker server version 7.6.x using a backup created with client version 7.5.x. Note that only the version major/minor numbers are checked for this. The reverse is supported however. For example a 7.6.x backup stored on a 7.5.x server is fully supported. ii) Some of the later EMC NetWorker client versions support IPv6 networking. At the moment NBMR does not. The client backup and Disaster Recovery sequence must be performed in IPv4 mode. iii) NBMR does not support Windows 'C ore' server systems. Requirements
NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme 5 i) Either Windows Server 2008 SP2, 2008 R2 SP1, 2012 or 2012 R2 is required. Both 32 and 64bit versions are supported where relevant. ii) Requires Administrator privilege to install and run. iii) At the time of release the EMC NetWorker client versions supported are 7.5.4, 7.6.5, 8.0.4, 8.1.3, 8.2.2 and 9.0.0. Other versions of the 7.5, 7.6, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2 and 9.0 clients may work, but they have not been specifically tested by C ristie. iv) At the time of release the EMC NetWorker Server versions supported are 7.5.x, 7.6.x, 8.0. x, 8.1.x, 8.2.x and 9.0.x. v) A minimum memory of 2 GB of RAM is required for booting the Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 recovery environments. vi) About 40 MB of free disk space is required to install and up to 56MB to hold the configuration information. If installed, the C RISP package requires 14MB plus a further 285MB for the NBMR fileset (required to generate the Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 recovery environments). vii) The EMC NetWorker client must be installed prior to the installation of NBMR. This is mandatory. viii) C ompatible with C ristie Recovery C onsole version 5.1. ix) Upgrades from versions of NBMR earlier and including 6.x.x will need to be re-licensed. Please contact C ristie Support or use the C ristie Licensing Portal. Known Issues i) On the first reboot after DR, on certain OS's, the MSDTC service may fail to start. However, after the first logon this service will be restarted. ii) On systems using dynamic disks you may be required to boot a recovered system a second time to correctly configure the dynamic volumes. iii) There is no IPv6 address support in the NBMR Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 DR environments. 1.1 7.3 New in 7.3 i) Added support for EMC NetWorker 9.0.0 clients and servers. ii)added a rental licensing option. The End User License has been amended to cover rental licenses. iii) Only a single activation code is now required to license the product. iv) The WinPE5 DR environment now supports booting on both UEFI (64-bit only) and legacy BIOS's. v) The WinPE5 DR environment now supports UEFI(GPT) to BIOS(MBR) and BIOS to UEFI boot conversion on recovery. Note only UEFI 64-bit is supported. vi) The suite installer now checks for the installed service pack level and disallows installs on Windows OS's without the required minimum service pack. vii) The Microsoft C ++ 2015 redistributables are now installed by the suite installer. This allows the pre-requisite to prompt the user for a reboot if required. In earlier versions the prerequisite was installed silently sometimes causing a reboot without prompting the user first. viii) The Microsoft Universal C Run Time (UC RT) KB2999226 update is now installed on the host system by the suite installer. This is a dependency of the Microsoft C ++ 2015 redistributables above. ix) All NBMR installers and file components are now digitally signed with a SHA-256 based digital certificate.
6 Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker x) Now supports DR from EMC NetWorker Storage Node backups. xi) This release no longer supports Windows server 2003 x86/x64 platforms. xii) Documentation updated for this release. i) C orrected some minor problems in the Automated DR Answer File C reator tool. 1.2 7.2.6 New in 7.2.6 i) For the 7.2.6 suite release the Windows Agent remains at version 7.2.1. ii) C DS updated to version for 4.5.4 for compatibility with RS 4.2.1. iii) Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 filesets updated (used for creating the DR ISOs) for compatibility with RS 4.2.1. iv) Documentation updated for this release. None. 1.3 7.2.4 New in 7.2.4 i) For the 7.2.4 suite release the Windows Agent remains at version 7.2.1. ii) C DS updated to version for 4.5.3 for compatibility with RS 4.1.2. iii) Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 filesets updated (used for creating the DR ISOs) for compatibility with RS 4.1.2. iv) Added pending reboot detection to the suite installer. If a pending reboot is detected (because of recent system updates for example) a warning dialogue is displayed offering the user the opportunity to abort the install or continue. v) The Microsoft C ++ 2008 SP1 pre-requisites are now installed by the suite installer instead of the stand-alone NBMR installer. This allows the pre-requisite to prompt the user for a reboot if required. In earlier versions the pre-requisite was installed silently sometimes causing a reboot without prompting the user first. vi) Documentation updated for this release. None.
NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme 1.4 7 7.2.3 This version was skipped and not released. 1.5 7.2.2 This version was a fileset (i.e. DR ISO) only release only for compatibility with RS 4.1.1. 1.6 7.2.1 New in 7.2.1 i) Added support for EMC NetWorker client/server 8.2.0. ii) Now supports Windows 2012R2/8.1 natively using the new WinPE 5 based DR environment. iii) The result of the NBMRC fg configuration creation (success or failure) is now recorded in the Windows Application Event Log. iv) Now supports the C ristie License Activation Manager 1.1. v) Added support for C ristie Recovery C onsole 3.2. vi) Added a feature to disable the automatic dissimilar hardware step during an unattended DR sequence. vii) Revised Terms and C onditions. viii) Documentation updated for this release. These are used to create the WinPE2 and WinPE4 DR environments respectively. iv) The product licensing method has changed in this release. Rather than use a license file as in version 6.x.x and earlier new contract and activation codes are used instead. A new License
8 Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker Manager tool is now provided to enable the new codes to be entered, viewed and activated. Upgrades from existing installations of NBMR 6.x.x or earlier will also need to be re-licensed. v) The Driver Validation tool now checks hardware compatibility for both WinPE2 and WinPE4 versions. vi) During the dissimilar hardware phase of the recovery sequence any missing mass storage or network drivers for the new hardware are first looked for in the recovered system driver-set and loaded from there if matching drivers are found. vii) The WinPE2 and WinPE4 DR environments now boot up into the locale that the ISO's were created in with C RISP. For example if C RISP was installed on a host system set to English UK locale then the generated ISOs will boot with English UK keyboard and time display format. viii) Support for EMC NetWorker version 7.4.x has been dropped since this version went out of EMC extended service life in September 2012. ix) Documentation updated for this release. i) None. 1.9 6.5 New in 6.5 i) NBMR now supports Windows 2012 and Windows 8 when used in conjunction with the EMC NetWorker client version 8.0 SP1 (8.0.1). ii)windows 8 and Windows 2012 Storage Spaces (SS's) or Storage Pools (SP's) recoveries are supported in a 'passive' way. Any SS/SP disk/partitions backed up to the EMC NetWorker server will not be restored during the DR process. The SS's/SP's must be re-created manually when booted back into Windows and the contents then recovered manually from the EMC NetWorker server. Note any existing SS's/SP's detected on any of the target disks used during recovery will not be be disturbed. So if recovering to the original disks the contents will already be in place and the SS's/SP's will not therefore need to be recreated manually. iii)it is now possible to create a Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 recovery ISO based upon the EMC NetWorker client version 8.0.1 to support Windows 8 and Windows 2012 DRs. iv) The NBMR Suite installer now disables NBMR installation if no EMC NetWorker client is detected during the installation. v) C RISP has been updated to version 6.5.1. A few minor issues have been fixed. Note C RISP and the NBMR fileset will no longer install on Windows 8 or Windows 2012 because the Microsoft Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 WAIK is not supported on those OS's. i) C RISP allows customer supplied Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 drivers to be added to the ISO in addition to the standard C ristie supplied driver set. Also allows customer supplied Windows OS drivers to be added to the ISO for use with the Dissimilar Hardware wizard. vi) Added Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 driver support for LSI SAS2 and Dell PERC H200 disk controllers. vii) Added Windows PE2 and Windows PE5 driver support for HP NC 370, NC 371, NC 373, NC 374, NC 380, NC 382, NC 530, NC 532, NC 57712 and Broadcom BC M57711 NIC s. viii) Documentation updated for this release. i) None.
NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme 1.10 9 6.4.2 New in 6.4.2 i) NBMR now supports clients and server version 8.0.0. ii) The NBMR Suite installer now warns the User if no NetWorker client is detected during the installation. iii) The suite installer also checks that the user account running the installation has Administrator privilege. This is fatal and after warning the user will prevent the installation proceeding any further. iv) It is now possible to deploy NBMR and manage recoveries in conjunction with C MC version 3.1.1 or later. v) C RISP has been updated to version 6.4.3. A few minor issues have been fixed. vi) Enhanced the display of on screen NIC status in the C lone Setting dialogue during Disaster Recovery to show if it is operational. vii) Added new and updated driver support for the following HP NIC s: NC 320i, NC 320m, NC 325i, NC 325m, NC 326m, NC 324i, NC 326i, NC 7771, NC 7781, NC 7782, NC 7761, NC 1020, NC 320T, NC 105T, NC 105i, NC 107i, NC 150T, NC 329a, NC 329T, NC 329I, NC 328T, NC 331FLR, NC 331T, NC 331i, NC 332T, NC 330i viii) Added driver support for the Emulex 10Gb OneC onnect range of NIC s. ix) Updated driver support for Intel Gigabit 82580, I350 NIC s. x) Updated driver support for IBM MegaRAID SAS disk controllers. i) In the WinPE2 DR environment the disk scaling code for non-system Dynamic GPT disks wrongly corrected the MSR minimum size. In some cases this meant that the restored disk layout would not fit on the target disk if it had the original size. This is now fixed. ii) In the WinPE2 DR environment recovering a system that had a non-system MBR Dynamic disk back on to the original hardware would not let the recovery progress unless the nonsystem MBR Dynamic disk was partitioned, as it incorrectly identified the INI disk and AC T disk as being different. This is now fixed. iii) When using the C ristie Network C onfigurator tool in the WinPE2 DR environment to add a static IP address and then selecting "Apply" an error was produced. This is now fixed. iv) When NBMR is installed under the System account the initial configuration is now created correctly. v) An issue whereby the WinPE 2 recovery environment was not finding the correct IDE driver during dissimilar recovery has been fixed. A new InstallIDE.inf file has now been provided and will be used automatically by the Dissimilar Hardware Wizard. vi) When attempting to install NBMR on a native German system via the suite installer the default install folder is shown as " P ro g ra m File s" instead of " P ro g ra m m e ". This has been fixed for Windows XP and Windows 2003. By default on Windows Vista and later " P ro g ra m File s" exists and this is still shown as the default install folder. " P ro g ra m m e " is a link to " P ro g ra m File s" in this case. vii) A run of the configuration generator program NBMRC fg.exe did not create OFM.LOG when run from outside the NBMR installation folder. This has now been fixed.
10 1.11 Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker 6.4.1 New in 6.4.1 i) IMPORTANT! Because of recent (May 2012) Microsoft licensing changes, C ristie can no longer distribute the WinPE based DR environment directly to end users. The WinPE2 DR environment must now be created by end users using tools provided by C ristie and Microsoft. Please refer to the documentation provided with the C ristie ISO Producer (C RISP) product. ii) One advantage of the above change is that it is now possible for C ustomers to add the NetWorker client into the WinPE DR environment when creating the ISO. Earlier versions required the client to be added at recovery time. The user can build in any client version from 7.4.5 onwards. This also makes it possible to build severals ISO's each containing different client versions. C ristie recommends that the customer uses the same NetWorker client version in the WinPE DR ISO as used to perform the backup. iii) NBMR now supports client/servers 7.6.3. Please refer to the Requirements section in this Readme for exact versions supported. iv) It is now possible to change the recovered system's Hostname and/or IP address. v) NBMR now supports unattended DR's. A new Answer File C reator (AFC ) tool has been included to enable the creation of a script file to be used in unattended DR operations. vi) The product license agreement has been revised to clarify the use of the product for system migration or cloning. vii) The Online Help and manual has been updated for this release. viii) The new version of the setup program allows the Readme (i.e. this document) and the Installation Guide to be displayed before installing the program. ix) Minor enhancements to the WinPE based DR GUI. x) Added the following new driver support to the WinPE DR environment: HP NC 364m NIC Broadcom NetLink NIC LSI 3ware 9750 RAID C ontroller xi) Added new Win2003/2008 IDE drivers for use with the DHW when recovering to VMware. i) Selecting Italian for the TimeZone was not indicated with a 'tick' mark. ii) In some situations a System Reserved partition was left with a permanent drive letter allocated after a DR sequence. This has been fixed. 1.12 6.3.3 New in 6.3.3 i) Now supports encrypted and password protected backups for all supported versions of NetWorker. ii) The C ristie Network C onfigurator tool provided in the WinPE2 DR environment now displays help when the Help button is clicked. iii) Increased the timeout of the initial run of NBMRC fg.exe during installation from 10 to 20 minutes. iv) Added the ability to Select/Deselect all NetWorker savesets found in a backup during DR. v) Updated the C ristie Deployment Service (C DS) in the WinPE2 DR environment to 2.2.7. vi) The NetWorker client must be installed prior to the installation of NBMR. This is now
NBMR (Bare Machine Recovery for NetWorker) Readme 11 mandatory. vii) The VMware LSI_SAS drivers used for injecting into dissimilar systems during DR have been updated. Separate drivers are now included for Windows 2003 x86/x64 and Windows 2008 x86/x64. viii) The NBMR installer dialog now contains a shortcut to the Readme document (i.e. this document). ix) Documentation updated for this release. x) Added IDE Hyper-V drivers to the PE2 DR environment. xi) The following new WinPE2 drivers have been added: RealTek OEM NIC driver set. Emulex/ServerEngine 10Gb NIC drivers. HP NC 550SPF Dual Port 10GbE NIC driver. Adaptec I2O RAID driver. xii) The following WinPE2 drivers have been updated: Broadcom NetXtreme and NetXtreme II monolithic NIC drivers. Realtek 81xx NIC drivers. i) Fixed a problem where the Dissimilar Hardware Wizard (DHW) would not recognise Hyper-V drivers in the registry during the recovery of a VM. The effect of this was to cause the recovery to fail when in fact this was not the case. ii) Log file contents are now time-stamped consistently with local time. iii) Fixed a problem where a change of partition label during DR was not working. iv) Fixed a problem during DR where a correct client IP address was reported as 'unknown' if it was initially entered with the wrong value and subsequently corrected. v) Fixed a problem when attempting to Abort a DR sequence during the file count phase, where the DR console would hang. 1.13 6.3 New in 6.3 First Release.
