Roanoke-Chowan Community College Associate Degree Nursing Admission Procedures The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings. Courses will include content related to the nurse s role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of nursing, and as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse (RN). Employment opportunities include hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, physician s offices, industry, and community agencies. Approved by the NC Board of Nursing, the ADN program admits first time nursing students in the fall semester only. A maximum of 60 students may be enrolled in the program, which includes first and second level. To be considered for admission to the program, applicants must meet the admission requirements established by the College. Applicants must also meet those admission requirements established by the ADN program. ADN admission/selection is a competitive process which is outlined in this document. Individuals who are interested in the Nursing Program or currently enrolled in pre-nursing courses are strongly encouraged to attend one of two orientation sessions detailing the admissions process, held annually in October. The nursing faculty will advise each potential applicant about the course requirements for nursing and related courses for earning an Associate Degree in Nursing and the role of the Registrar in determining what credits are awarded on transfer course work. The admission/selection process for the ADN program is composed of three steps. Each step must be completed in sequence. The Nursing Program admits first time nursing students once each year for the fall semester. Applications are accepted from interested individuals beginning in November of the year prior to which the person wishes to enter the Nursing Program. Associate degree nursing program applications are available to be picked up from the nursing department or online at www.roanokechowan.edu. Applications do not carry over from year to year. A new application must be completed and the admission process followed beginning in November of the year prior to which that individual desires admission into the Nursing Program. Certain courses/classes are pre-requisites for admission into the Nursing Program, for example certified nursing assistant and CPR classes. Applications will continue to be processed as discussed in Step I until the program has reached the maximum enrollment and an appropriate alternate admissions list has been established. STEP I: Completion of Minimum Requirements 1. Applicant must complete the R-CCC application. 1

2. Applicant must complete the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program Application and submit a copy to the Coordinator of the ADN Program by February 1, no exceptions granted. 3. Applicant must be a high school graduate or have received a GED. An official high school transcript or an official copy of the GED scores and transcripts of all course work must be sent to: Registrar s Office Associate Degree in Nursing Program Roanoke-Chowan Community College 109 Community College Road Ahoskie, NC 27910 4. Applicant must contact all previously attended colleges to request official transcripts. Grades less than C on related curriculum sequence course work or less than B on nursing course work will not be transferred. Transcripts must be submitted to the Registrar s office and to Student Services. 5. Applicant must achieve minimum scores on placement tests. a. New applicants must complete the ASSET or COMPASS Placement Test with scores that meet the requirements designated by the college. These scores are as follows: Placement Test ASSET COMPASS Reading Skills 41 81 Writing Skills 41 70 Numerical Skills (Pre-Algebra) 41 47 Elementary Algebra (Algebra) 41 46 Call the Testing Center at 862-1238 to schedule an appointment for testing. b. For applicants with previously earned college credit, the applicant may be exempt from testing as follows: (1) Applicants who receive transfer credit for PSY 150 or SOC 210 or some other college course in social science or science are not required to take the Reading Skills component of the ASSET or COMPASS Placement Test. (2) Applicants who receive transfer credit for ENG 111 are not required to take the Writing Skills component of the ASSET or COMPASS Test. (3) Applicants who have completed a college Algebra course with a C or better are not required to take the Elementary Algebra component of the ASSET Placement Test or the Algebra component of the COMPASS Placement Test. (4) All applicants are required to take the ASSET Numerical Skills component or the COMPASS Pre-Algebra component. If an applicant is eligible for any exemption from testing, the applicant must secure a waiver form from the Director of Counseling Services before testing, which must be presented to the test administrator on the day of testing. 2

c. Applicants not scoring at or above the cut-off scores on the placement testing will be placed in the appropriate developmental education courses. Students must then progress through developmental studies until the following proficiency levels are completed: English - ENG 095 Algebra - MAT 070 Students must complete developmental courses with a grade of C or above. - Or- Retesting on the ASSET or COMPASS will be permitted once, providing the applicant has not enrolled in any developmental courses. The testing waiver form will indicate the area(s) of the test to be retaken. If after retesting, the applicant has not met the cut off scores on the placement test, the applicant must then enroll in and progress through the appropriate developmental courses. d. Test scores will be valid for a period of five years. Applicants who have taken the ASSET or COMPASS placement test at other institutions must have these scores reported to the college Assessment and Testing Center. e. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores will be considered in accordance with R- CCC admissions policy. All applicants will be required to take the ASSET numerical skills component or the COMPASS Pre-Algebra component. 6. Applicant must complete or have completed one biology course in high school or one course equivalent to high school biology at R-CCC or another college with a minimum grade of C. Students planning to complete science courses at R-CCC must comply with appropriate prerequisite requirements, which include completion of high school biology within the last 5 years. 7. Applicant must complete or have completed one chemistry course in high school or one course equivalent to high school chemistry at R-CCC or another college with a minimum grade of C. Students planning to complete science courses at R-CCC must comply with appropriate prerequisite requirements, which include completion of high school chemistry within the last 5 years. 8. Applicant must have a minimum cumulative (overall) grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or more on the most recent four academic semesters of coursework. The GPA calculations will omit grades from developmental courses, ACA courses and PE courses. 9. Applicant must be listed as a Certified Nurse Aid with the NC Division of Health Service Regulation Registry by August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of listing with the CNA registry will be due on or before April 15. 10. Applicant must submit evidence of cardiopulmonary certification (CPR) at the Health Care Provider Level by August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of CPR will be due on or before April 15. 11. After the qualifying 2.5 GPA has been confirmed by the Registrar s Office, the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Entrance Examination for the ADN Program must be taken. 3

a. Applicant will be notified by the Nursing Department when to schedule an appointment to take the TEAS Test. TEAS scores will be valid for a period of one year. The scores achieved on this test will be used in the admission selection process for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. b. The applicant must achieve the minimum score on the TEAS as determined by ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute). c. Applicants who fail to meet the minimum passing score on the TEAS will be allowed to retest one time during the admissions process for admission into fall semester. 12. Applicants seeking admission must complete ALL of the above minimum admission requirements. Completion of the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the nursing program. Step II: Competitive Criteria for ADN Admission/Selection 1. After the applicant has completed the admission requirements outlined in Step I, each applicant will be evaluated utilizing the following criteria. Assessment Criteria Maximum Points CRITERION 1: Grade-Point Average 45 pts. CRITERION 2: TEAS Score 50 pts. CRITERION 3: Resident of the Roanoke Chowan area 5 pts. (Hertford, Bertie, Northampton, and Gates) The points an applicant receives from each of these criteria will be added together. The applicants who receive the highest number of points will be considered for admission to the program. After the criteria have been applied, the date of original application to the ADN program will be utilized to determine priority for admission in circumstances where applicants have achieved the same score. Criterion 1: Grade-Point Average (Total Possible Points=45) a. If the applicant has completed 12 or more hours of coursework at the associate degree level or higher, the GPA will be computed based on the most recent four semesters of coursework, excluding developmental courses, ACA courses, and PE courses. GPA 3.5-4.0 = 45 pts. GPA 3.0-3.5 = 35 pts. GPA 2.5-3.0 = 25 pts GPA less than 2.5 is not eligible for admission b. If the applicant does not meet Criterion 1(a), then the applicant s cumulative high school grade-point average will be used in lieu of the R-CCC grade point average. 4

c. If the applicant does not meet Criterion 1(a) or 1(b), then the applicant s score on the GED will be used in lieu of the R-CCC grade-point average. Fractions of a point at a level of 0.5 or greater will be rounded up to the next whole number. (Ex. 79.5 rounds to 80 and 79.4 remains a 79.) TEAS Scores Overall Composite Score: Score > 80% = 50 points Score 76-80 % = 40 points Score 71-75% = 30 points Score 70% = 20 points Criterion 3: Residency Current residents of the surrounding Roanoke-Chowan area (i.e., Hertford, Bertie, Northampton, and Gates counties) will receive an additional 5 points when they apply for admission to the program. Applicants who are selected to enter the Nursing Program will receive a letter of conditional acceptance which explains the third step in the admissions process that will result in the applicant s receiving final or unconditional acceptance. Step III: Determination of Enrollment Status Upon conditional acceptance into the ADN program applicant must: 1. Provide proof of listing as a Nursing Assistant I with no substantiated findings with the North Carolina Division of Facility Services (NCDFS) or completion of a DFS approved Nursing Assistant Training and Competency Evaluation Program and awaiting nurse aid registry verification by August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of listing with the CNA registry will be due on or before April 15. 2. Provide proof of current CPR Certification. (Health Care Provider Level) by August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of CPR will be due on or before April 15. 3. Submit a completed North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) Health 5

Examination Form (available from Student Services) verifying physical and emotional health as evidence of the applicant s ability to provide safe nursing care to the public (21 NCAC 36.0320). This examination includes a current TB skin test (chest x-ray if positive TB skin test), STS (Serology Test for Syphilis), Chicken Pox titer (or vaccine), Hepatitis B series (or declination*), and complete immunization records. The health exam may be completed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. The health exam must be current within 6 months of enrollment in a NUR course and be submitted by April 15, no extensions will be granted. *Applicant may sign a declaration form for waiver of Hepatitis B immunization after consultation with the program coordinator. The Nursing Department must have the original Health Examination Form on file in the student s health record in the Nursing Department by April 15 th, no exceptions will be granted. If the Health Examination Form and all other required documents are not submitted by the deadline dates (as stated above), the applicant may forfeit admission into the Nursing Program. Upon evaluation of these documents, a final recommendation will be made by the ADN Admissions Committee regarding admission status. The applicant will be assigned one of the following enrollment categories: 1. Accepted for enrollment 2. Alternate (Qualified but placed on a waiting list) 3. Not accepted (Those who do not qualify at this time) A letter will be sent to each applicant informing the applicant of the final admission recommendation. Each student who receives a letter of unconditional admission (acceptance) will be required to attend the orientation session for the ADN program in August. NOTES: 1. Any applicant not admitted into the program in a particular year would need to reapply for entry into the ADN Program the next year. Students must then adhere to the admission policies that are current for that year. 2. It is mandatory for applicants to inform Student Services of any changes in their personal information occurring since the date of application in order for corrections to be made on the selection data sheet (phone number, address, etc.) The College will not be responsible for any letters not delivered because the application information was incorrect. 3. If the applicant s overall college GPA falls below 2.5 prior to the admission date, the applicant will forfeit admission to the nursing program. 4. The nursing faculty recommends that all students enrolled in nursing carry private health insurance coverage. 5. The admission procedure for the ADN Program is revised annually. Applicants are advised to go to the college website at www.roanokechowan.edu to read the current admission procedures. 6. Any applicant whose behavior is inconsistent with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act (NC NPA) during the admissions process may forfeit their right to be admitted into the ADN Program. Criminal Background Check A clinical component is required by the ADN Program and a criminal background check is required by most clinical agencies. A student s criminal record will impact the student s opportunity to successfully complete the clinical portion of the course and therefore will limit the student s ability to progress in the program. If a student is unable to attend any clinical site, due to the criminal background check, the student will be dismissed from the program. All current minimum admission requirements including R-CCC ADN semester related curriculum sequence courses must be met prior to being considered for competitive selection as a transfer student with a C or better. The transfer applicant will be considered for admission along with all other students applying for entrance into a particular year depending upon transfer credit received for nursing courses. The transfer applicant will receive credit for nursing and related coursework following evaluation by the Dean of Student Services, the Registrar, and the Program Coordinator of the Associate Degree Nursing program, in accordance with R-CCC policies. Course syllabi may be requested, particularly for nursing coursework, in order to fully evaluate the awarding of transfer credit. Licensed Practical Nurses will be considered for advanced placement into NUR 112. Applicant must complete or receive transfer credit for coursework required in curriculum sequence prior to point of entrance into NUR course with a grade of C or above in related coursework and a B or better in NUR courses. After review of transcripts, meeting of competences, and completion or transfer credit for curriculum sequence courses, credit may be awarded for NUR 111. Due to the rapidly changing technology in nursing studies, any student seeking admission to the ADN program on transfer from another ADN program and/or after more than one year lapse in nursing education will be asked to demonstrate satisfactory performance of nursing competencies by means of theory (written exam) and clinical performance (skill competency) evaluations. LPN seeking advanced placement will be required to demonstrate theory (written exam) and clinical performance (skills) 7

competency and completion or transfer credit of curriculum sequence related coursework with a C or better. The method for evaluating satisfactory competence will be written and skills competency examinations administered by the nursing faculty at a scheduled time, to be announced during the application process. All applicants seeking advanced placement must complete ALL of the above admission requirements by the beginning of the semester prior to enrollment. (For example, if you plan to enter the ADN program as a transfer or an advanced placement student in the spring semester your application and all supporting documents are required to be submitted within thirty (30) days of the beginning of fall semester). Completion of the minimum admission requirements for advanced placement does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Following completion of the minimum admission requirements for advanced placement as a transfer student, the competitive selection process will be implemented for admission to the ADN program. After the applicant has completed all minimum admission requirements for advanced placement into the ADN program, the selection process will be implemented in order to select the best qualified applicants. Applicants will be considered for admission along with all other students applying for entrance into that year, using the competitive selection criteria and an associated points system. (Refer to Competitive Criteria for ADN Admission). Upon conditional acceptance, but prior to enrollment in the ADN program, transfer applicant must: 1. ALL current minimum admission requirements must be met. The readmission applicant will be considered for admission along with all other students applying for entrance into a particular year depending upon previous exit point from NUR coursework. Due to the rapidly changing technology in nursing studies, any student seeking readmission to the ADN program after more than one year lapse in nursing education will be asked to demonstrate satisfactory performance of nursing competencies by means of theory (written exam) and clinical (skills) performance evaluations. The method for evaluating satisfactory competence will be written and skills competency examinations administered by the nursing faculty at a scheduled time, to be announced during the application process. Students who were dismissed because of unsatisfactory and/or unsafe clinical behaviors will be counseled prior to readmission. The Program Coordinator and faculty will decide on an appropriate course of action. The applicant who has exited the program two times for unsatisfactory academic, laboratory, or clinical performance evaluations will be ineligible for readmission. Any applicant not enrolled in the nursing program within two years from the time of their withdrawal/dismissal will have to repeat all nursing courses. Each applicant seeking readmission to the ADN program must complete ALL of the above admission requirements. Completion of the minimum admission requirements for readmission is not a guarantee of acceptance. Following completion of the minimum admission requirements for readmission, the competitive selection process will be implemented for admission to the ADN program. After the applicant has completed all minimum admission requirements for readmission into the ADN program, the selection process will be implemented in order to select the best qualified applicants. The applicant will be considered for admission along with all other students applying for entrance into that year, using the competitive selection criteria and an associated points system. Any student exiting the traditional curriculum, not the current concept based curriculum, will be considered for reentry into the concept based curriculum in NUR 112 after completion of above criteria. Upon conditional acceptance, but prior to enrollment in the ADN program, transfer applicant must: 1. Criminal Background Check A clinical component is required by the ADN Program and a criminal background check is required by most clinical agencies. A student s criminal record will impact the student s opportunity to successfully complete the clinical portion of the course and therefore will limit the student s ability to progress in the program. If a student is unable to attend any clinical site, due to the criminal background check, the student will be dismissed from the program. Checklist for Applying to Nursing Complete application to Roanoke- Chowan Community College. Submit all transcripts to Roanoke- Chowan Community College for evaluation by the registrar. Possess a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on all prior course work, excluding developmental courses, ACA courses, and PE courses. Complete application to the Associate Degree Nursing Program (ADN). Complete a course for Certified Nurse Aid I and become registered with the NC Division of Health Service Regulation Registry by August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of listing with the CNA registry will be due on or before April 15. Complete a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the Health Care Provider Level by the August 1, no extensions will be granted. For fall 2014 ADN admission proof of CPR will be due on or before April 15. Go to the website for the TEST OF ESSENTIAL ACCADEMIC SKILLS (TEAS) to learn how to prepare for the entrance examination. (www.atitesting.com) Applicant will be notified by the Nursing Department when to schedule appointment for TEAS testing. Call the testing center 252-862-1238 to schedule appointment to sit for TEAS test. Payments for the TEAS test are handled through the Business Office. Take the TEAS Test. Minimum scores will be based on recommendations from ATI. These scores will be used for the Competitive Admissions Process (Step II page 4 of Admission Procedures)* After the Nursing Department reviews your qualifications for admission, you will receive a letter stating your admission status (alternate admissions list or denial) or a letter of conditional acceptance with a copy of your Health Profile Forms and directions about what your Health Care Provider must complete on the forms. Submit your completed Health Profile Forms with your immunization record and any other supporting documents to the Nursing Department by April 15, no extensions will be granted. After review of all admission requirements by the Nursing Department, you will receive a letter of unconditional acceptance into the Nursing Program. The letter will contain information about the Orientation Day for New Nursing Students, uniform fittings, supplies, and book lists.
