SURVEY OF GRADUATE PROGRAMS WITH COOPERATIVE AND INTERNSHIP OPTIONS IN CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES Web sites of Canadian universities offering graduate studies were examined to determine whether they included either cooperative education or internship opportunities for their students. Table 1 reports the master s and doctoral programs by university that offered cooperative education, and Table 2 contains the programs with internships by university. The graduate deans of these universities were then surveyed by email with the request that they examine the table for their own university for accuracy, and secondly to report the enrollment in 2002-2003 for these programs. The enrollments by program for the small number of universities that replied are shown in Tables 1 and 2. Note that the enrollments for the University of Victoria are for 2001-2002, and both masters and doctoral students are reported in the master s section. Where students were reported by the institution as full time (FT) or part time (PT) that information is included, otherwise all numbers are for full time students. It is apparent from these tables that work-integrated learning is relatively rare in Canadian graduate programs, except for those disciplines which mandate work experience prior to graduation as part of the requirements for membership in the profession. Although the number of responses was quite low, work-integrated programs with optional cooperative work terms or internships attract small numbers of students. Further study is required to ascertain the reasons for these findings.
