BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Sergio O. Martinez is professor of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey Campus; and researcher and chair of the Sensors and Devices area of the National School of Engineering and Sciences at the same Institute, where he has worked for 30 years. He is founder and leader of the Biointeractive Systems and BioMEMS research group. Sergio O. Martínez received the B.S. degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering and the M.S. degree in Control Engineering both from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, México in 1983 and 1985, respectively. He obtained a M.S. degree in Electronics from Philips International Institute, Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1990; and the Ph.D. degree in Microelectronics from National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, France in 2002. In 1984, Sergio O. Martínez joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey where he was appointed Associate Professor and Professor in 1991 and 1997 respectively. In 2002, he started research activities on BioMEMS, and since 2005, he is Principal Investigator of the Biointeractive Systems and BioMEMS Research Chair. Sergio O. Martínez is member of the Mexican Research National System since 2004 and the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2010. His recent research activities, focused on BioMEMS and Microelectronics, include Modeling and Implementation of Electrokinetically-driven Microfluidic Devices, CMOS-based/SPR-based Biosensing Platforms, and Carbon-MEMS. He is or has been Principal Investigator in projects funded by CONACYT, the Mexican Economy Ministry, and the Bureau of Science and Technology of Nuevo Leon. He has authored/coauthored 65 peer-reviewed publications, 5 book chapters and 1 granted patent. He has supervised 31 Master thesis and 7 PhD thesis. From 2002 to 2007, Sergio O. Martínez has introduced new courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs in Electronics at Tecnológico de Monterrey: CMOS Microelectronics, Microsystems, Digital Integrated Systems, Bioinstrumentation, and BioMEMS. In 2004, he founded the Microelectronics and MEMS Design Lab fostering training and research activities on these subjects, and in 2014 he founded the Microfabrication and Microfluidics Lab. In 2004, he was appointed department head of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a position that hold until June 2014, when he was appointed chair of the Sensors and Devices area at the National School of Engineering and Sciences. His academic leadership at Tecnológico de Monterrey has been awarded with Rómulo Garza Prize for Research and Technology Development in 2009, and the Teaching and Research Award in 2007 and 2010.
