Roane State Community College Associate of Applied Science Nursing Program (A.A.S.) Admission Packet The Nursing program is a course of study leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The program has full approval by the Tennessee Board of Nursing and accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The Nursing courses at RSCC are offered over 4 semesters. In addition to the nursing courses there are 27 credit hours of general education requirements for completion of the degree. You must have 12 credits of the 27 credit hours, with the math requirement as part of the 12 hours, completed prior to the application deadline. Since Nursing students spend a significant amount of time outside of class in study and laboratory practice, completion of the general education requirements is recommended prior to beginning the nursing program. Applications Please read the following information carefully. Minimum requirements for admission to the 2011 Nursing Program are listed below. All items are required. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program. In order to apply to the nursing program the applicant must first be admitted to Roane State. Upon submission of your application you will receive a confirmation email that it has been received. Applications submitted after the 2011 deadline will NOT be considered. In the event you apply and are not accepted, you must submit a new application for future terms. Transcripts Official high school transcripts must be submitted no later than the third Friday in February, (February 18, 2011) deadline. If transferring general education classes from another college, submit an official transcript showing the college courses completed before the deadline. Official college transcripts must be submitted to the Admissions and Records Office at Roane State by the February deadline. Admission Eligibility You are able to apply for the Nursing program if you meet the following criteria: 1. Nursing Examination for Roane State s Nursing Program- HESI You will find registration information for the pre-nursing examination within the Nursing on-line application. You will sign up for the test at that point. Roane State waives the pre-nursing examination requirement for applicants who have a college degree from an accredited college (SACS or equivalent.) The prenursing exam must be taken and passed prior to acceptance into the nursing program. If you have taken the HESI examination at another college you can submit those scores for us to determine if they are passing or not. This exam is given at the Roane County and Oak Ridge campuses during the months of: October, November, and February. The cost of the test is $29. If unsuccessful on the first attempt, the applicant must wait 6 months to re-test. Once you pass the exam it is good for three years. There is an optional study guide entitled Admission Assessment Exam Review, 2nd Edition available at www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn=9781416056355. General Education Requirements The 27 credit hours of general education requirements for the nursing program may be completed at any Roane State campus except for the Knox County Center for Health Sciences. Students may take the required general education courses at any pace prior to acceptance into the program. Nursing courses can only be taken by those officially accepted into the program and must be taken in the order they are offered. Once admitted to the program, nursing classes are held on the Roane County, Oak Ridge, and Knoxville campuses. Students completing required science courses after acceptance into the program must attain a C or better in order to retain their spot in the program. Additional Requirements for Accepted Students Students accepted to the program must meet certain requirements before they can attend the required clinical rotations. An orientation session is scheduled for accepted students at which time they receive specific information about health requirements, criminal background checks, drug screenings, and CPR Health Care Provider certification. Background checks and drug screens must be acceptable to clinical affiliates in order for students to attend clinicals and meet the requirements of the program. Admission Point Scale System Acceptance to the Nursing Program is a competitive process. A maximum of approximately 120 students will be accepted to begin classes in the Fall semester. A point system is used to rank each applicant based on the following criteria: 1. G.P.A. - calculated only on the general education classes required for the AAS Nursing. 2. An "A" in Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, and College Algebra or a higher level math course is awarded 2 points per class. A "B" in these classes is awarded 1 point per class. 3.
