Working with H-drive, I-drive, and DropBox Files Online Preamble: Students and Staff have both individual networked storage space (referenced on-campus as the H-drive) and shared storage space (referenced on-campus as the I-drive) on which to store their data files. Files kept at either location are now also accessible online. This document details how to upload, download, delete, and rename files using Internet Explorer. It also details how to create, delete, and rename directory objects. Logging into the Site: Step 1: Launch an instance of Internet Explorer and navigate to the Information Technology Services site at http://its.humber.ca. When the page finishes loading, click the Login link in the upper left-hand corner. Step 2: Log in using your HCnet username and password. These are the same credentials used to access on-campus workstations. 1 3 2
Step 3: After logging in, the Information Technology Service site will redirect you back to its homepage. Note the additional tabs across the top and additional links down the left-hand side. Click the My Files link. Note: For security reasons, the site will ask you to re-key your password. Key in your HCnet password and click the Authorize button. Navigating Directories: To move into a directory, click once on the directory s name. Current Location Page 2 of 11
To move up a directory, click the Return to Previous Directory link. Current Location Downloading a File: Downloading retrieves a remote file and places it on your computer. Step 1: Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to download. Then, click on the file s name to initiate the download. Page 3 of 11
Step 2: Click the Save button in the File Download dialog box. Do not click the Open button unless you will NOT be making changes to the file. Note: Starting a file download may trigger a browser warning. Step 3: Use the Save As dialog box to direct the download to spot on your computer s hard drive. Click the Save button to continue. 1 2 Page 4 of 11
Step 4: Windows will alert you when the file finishes downloading. Click the Open button to launch the appropriate application and open the file. Uploading a File: Uploading pushes a file from your computer to a remote storage site. Step 1: Navigate to the spot on your hard drive where you want the uploaded file to reside. Then, click the Upload File(s) link. Page 5 of 11
Step 2: Click the Browse button. Then, use the Open dialog box to select the file you want to upload. Click the Open button to continue. 1 2 3 Step 3: To add another file, click the Browse button. Click the X next to a file to deselect it. Click the Upload button to start uploading. Note: The site will allow you to upload either a maximum of ten files at a time OR a maximum of 100 MB of data at a time. It is one or the other. Note: Checking the Overwrite Existing Files box causes the uploaded file to take the place of any file of the same name in that same directory. Page 6 of 11
Step 4: Wait patiently for the upload to complete. Depending on the number and the size of the files, it may take the site a few moments. Deleting an Object: Step 1: Click on the Delete icon next to the object you want to delete. If it is a directory you want to delete, it first needs to be completely empty. Note: Directories must be free of all files and directories to be deleted. Page 7 of 11
Step 2: At this point, the site will ask you to confirm your intentions. Click the No button to cancel. Click the Yes button to Delete the object. Note: Once an object has been deleted, it is irrecoverable. Make absolutely sure you have the right object BEFORE you delete it. Creating a New Directory: Step 1: Navigate to the directory in which you would like the new directory to reside. Then, click on the Create Directory link. Page 8 of 11
Step 2: Key in a name for the new directory in the Create Directory text box. Double-check your spelling and then click the Create button. 1 2 Step 3: The site will try to create the directory. It will then refresh itself and display either an error message or an acknowledgement. Note: No two objects in the same directory can have the same name. You will get an error if try to re-use a name that already exists. Page 9 of 11
Renaming an Object: Step 1: Click the Edit button (pencil-like icon) directly to the left of the file or directory you want to rename. A text box will then appear. Step 2: Key in a new name for the object. Click the X button to cancel the Rename operation. Click the Rename button to continue. 2 1 Page 10 of 11
Step 3: The site will try to rename the object. It will then refresh itself and display either an error message or an acknowledgement. Note: No two objects in the same directory can have the same name. You will get an error if try to re-use a name that already exists. Logging Out of the Site: To end your session, click the Logoff button in the left-most pane and close your browser window. If you do not logout, the site will eventually time-out on its own.
