Revised May 24, 2006 MANITOBA TO HOST 2006 WESTERN PREMIERS CONFERENCE, NORTH AMERICAN LEADERS SUMMIT Premiers from eastern Canada, governors from the western United States and Mexico, and ambassadors from the three countries will join Canada s western and northern premiers in Gimli, Manitoba next week for a one-day summit on North American relations. The North American Leaders Summit will be held May 31, immediately following the 2006 Western Premiers Conference, which begins the evening of May 29 and runs through May 30. Premiers and governors are already working together on regional issues this was a natural extension of those efforts, said Manitoba Premier Gary Doer. Provinces and states are on the front lines of both implementing and being impacted by national and international policies. We believe we can provide leadership on issues that affect our citizens, issues such as trade, transportation, energy and agriculture. We have grassroots experience and we need to be more involved to ensure national initiatives are being developed from ground up, as opposed to top down. Premiers from the western provinces and northern territories will also meet with national Aboriginal leaders in Gimli, May 29, just prior to the start of WPC. Topics to be discussed at the 2006 WPC include federal, provincial and territorial relations, agriculture, green economy and energy, pandemic preparedness, and active living and sport, including the 2007 Canada Winter Games and the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Premiers and delegates from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut are expected to attend the 2006 WPC. - 30 - Media contacts, preliminary media programme and media accreditation form attached.
