The outlook is bright for the 34th International Dental Show IDS 2011 Dear business partners, The 140-year history of WIELAND Dental would not be possible without you. Sincere thanks for the commitment and loyalty you have shown to our company. At WIELAND Dental, we see ourselves as trendsetters in the dental sector, combining the best of tradition and innovation. Nowadays, innovations are mainly digital or at least are directly connected to digital applications. And this is where we see our mission for the coming years. As one of world s the leading companies in the area of dental prosthetics, we are not only dedicated to developing new technologies, but our highly successful conventional products offering sophisticated and highly efficient solutions are nudging ever closer to the digital world. The Zenoflex dimension veneering ceramic enables you to transfer all the benefits of software applications to build-up techniques. Whether you opt for the Cut-Back technique or One-layer build-up, nothing is impossible. And incidentally, we have also freed the monolithic ZENOSTAR concept of all limitations by releasing it for indications previously restricted to standard restorations. And this applies even more so when we include the new ZENOSTAR Discs. This makes it an easy matter to reproduce all dental shades, even when making monolithic restorations. In our view, this really does give your lab a genuine competitive edge. In this newsletter, you will find more about a wealth of new products and innovations. We would be delighted to show you these products in person in the near future. What is more, WIELAND Dental has started the year with a new corporate structure. In future, we shall be devoting ourselves entirely to the dental sector. We have sold our former industrial division to SAXONIA Holding GmbH, who has plans to rapidly expand activities in this sector. The firm of WIELAND Dental Ceramics, which has until now been a separate company will in future be affiliated to WIELAND Dental. Ownership remains in the hands of BWK Beteiligungsgesellschaft and the Wieland family. Tradition can not be maintained without a continuous process of change. Let us face the challenges and look forward to the opportunities that will no doubt open up and draw mutual benefit from them. We have ample reason to face the future together with optimism. In many places, dentistry and dental technology are more efficient and more profitable than ever before the success stories that have reached me are evidence of this. Join us in making 2011 one of your most successful years! We look forward to seeing you at the 34th International Dental Show in Cologne, if not before. NEWS With WIELAND a digital step ahead It is in the nature of software that it is under constant development. And IDS 2011 is sure to abound with a wealth of innovations paraded for the benefit of current and future users, either as finished products or BETA versions. This trade fair therefore presents the perfect opportunity for potential customers to form a full impression of all the products currently on the market and their respective features. For you the customer, this means basing purchase decisions not only on the range of functions on offer but also on the potential for future development and matters of handling, as well your own personal preferences. For WIELAND s partners 3Shape (Denmark) and Dental Wings (Canada), rapid advances in design software have gone hand in hand with progress in scanner technology. For example, 3Shape is developing a scanner with a higher camera resolution. This will make it possible to exactly reproduce the position of model analogs with the aid of a scan abutment. The new generation of scanners can now detect lines engraved onto the surface of the model. This is especially helpful when using model casting software. Semi-automatic edge detection makes the system much faster to use. At the IDS, WIELAND will be presenting further innovations in the BETA version of the DentalSystem 2012 application. The ideal entry-level product is the low-cost 3Shape D500 scanner with a somewhat longer scanning time and more modest range of functions and simpler license agreement. An especially affordable solution for new entrants to the world of digital technology. With the ZENOTEC Scan S107 scanner, WIELAND and Dental Wings are giving a preview of the future flagship of the Canadian software and hardware manufacturer. Equipped with an additional optical camera, the preview scan is complete in a matter of seconds. As with the ZENOTEC Scan S50, the computer hardware comes in the form of an integrated PC. And Release 4.3 of the software brings new features, too. In addition to a virtual articulator, the new version enables upper and lower arches to be modelled simultaneously. At the IDS, we will be pleased to demonstrate the many options offered by the new software. In conjunction with milling machines, the ZENOTEC CAM software application has an increasingly important role to play. The new ZENOTEC CAM Release 2 from WIELAND has many new innovations in store. For example, text can be engraved onto the unit to be milled as an aid to identification. In addition to handling connectors, the ZENOTEC 3+1 milling machines now make it possible to mill more than one insertion direction. Issue 01/2011 Page 5
NEWS New ZENOSTAR Discs * extra translucent and 4 shade types The new ZENOSTAR Zr Translucent Blanks will come in four shade variations. They are ideally suited to the fabrication of monolithic ZENOSTAR crowns and bridges with a high degree of translucence which are finished by the application of staining techniques. The new highly translucent zirconium dioxide product line combines top aesthetics with universality and is easy to use in the lab. It is WIELAND s declared aim to inject greater efficiency into dental labs. The new ZENOSTAR Discs are a great success in this regard. For one thing, a single sinter program can be used for all groups of indications. This not only saves time but also ensures the capacity of the sinter furnace is exploited more efficiently. The new WIELAND blanks: four shades of translucency ZENOSTAR Zr Translucent is equally suitable for both crown and bridge work and monolithic restorations, which enables lab inventories to be reduced. Only stained? Aesthetics à la ZENOSTAR When making fully-contoured ZENOSTAR restorations, the user has two shading options: either the familiar ZENOSTAR brush infiltration technique in which the stain is applied before the sinter bake or the new ZENOSTAR shading technique. For the ZENOSTAR shading technique, WIELAND has developed pre-shaded blanks in four shade variations (pure, light, medium and intense) on the basis of which it is possible to accurately and easily reproduce all 16 dental shades of the classical shade guide. This unique shading concept is perfectly matched to the WIELAND veneering ceramics and can be carried out using ZENOSTAR stains after only a minimum of training. Highlights of ZENOSTAR Zr Translucent: Low inventories, since a single material can be used for all applications A single sinter program (1450 C) for all zirconium dioxide restorations Excellent anti-ageing properties as a result of new composition and low sintering temperature Available in pure for the brush infiltration technique Available in three basic shades for easy and fast reproduction of the 16 classical shades using stains Unique shade concept, perfectly matched to the WIELAND ceramics Reliable in use; easy to reproduce shades after a minimum of training Perfect aesthetics (excellent translucence) Range of indications: Monolithic restorations (brush infiltration and stain technique) Frameworks Cut-Back technique Monolithic ZENOSTAR crowns and ZENOSTAR bridges: The aesthetic alternative to base metal restorations *certain registration restrictions may apply Page 6 Issue 01/2011
ZENOSTAR Polishing Set The ideal dental surgeon s instrument set for professional ajustment and polishing of monolithic restorations in zirconium dioxide Monolithic restorations in zirconium dioxide are becoming more and more popular, especially as an aesthetic alternative to base metal restorations. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, biocompatibility and long restoration life are also key criteria in the choice of a denture material. The exceptional strength of zirconium dioxide makes it especially suitable for long-lasting restorations. In a mastication study carried out at the University of Zurich, ** ZENOSTAR crowns were found to feature an especially low degree of abrasion at the ceramic material and opposing teeth. This simulation showed that the polished ZENOSTAR crown demonstrated the least amount of abrasion of the material itself and also of the opposing teeth. The study also showed how important polishing is. It is therefore especially important to ensure that the occlusal surfaces are polished to perfection after they have been fitted into the patent s mouth, in order to prevent abrasion to the opposing teeth. Highlights of the ZENOSTAR Polishing Set: Ideal for the ZENOSTAR concept Perfect conditioning of the occlusal surface after insertion keeps abrasion to a minimum Specially matched grain sizes give perfect results in a very short time The diamond particles are evenly distributed to ensure precise and reproducible polishing quality The diamond grain is permanently bonded in a special coating to give high rates of material removal and long bur life Easy to handle Exclusive design For this purpose, WIELAND offers nine matching instruments designed to give fast and professional finishing and polishing of zirconium dioxide restorations in four stages: 1 2 3 4 Grinding, material removal, trimming ZENOSTAR Diamonds Smoothing ZENOSTAR Polisher Pre-polish Polishing ZENOSTAR Polisher Finish High-lustre ZENOSTAR Polisher Glossy The ZENOSTAR Polishing Set* is available in two versions, Basic and Premium: ZENOSTAR Polishing Set Basic: Practical Affordable ZENOSTAR Polishing Set Premium: Exclusive design High-quality, stable box in sterilisable stainless steel * certain registration restrictions may apply **The study is currently being prepared for publication (Stawarczyk B, Özcan M [2010] Abrasionsuntersuchungen mit verschiedenen Dentalwerkstoffen, Dental Materials Unit, University of Zurich). In addition to the machine control system, the ZENOTEC mini software package also includes the ZENOTEC CAM basic software. This is a valuable aid to blank management, ensuring the most space-saving nesting with a minimum of computation time. The performance of the ZENOTEC CAM basic system is enhanced by proven WIELAND milling strategies and milling geometries. Your guarantee of the very best milling results. ZENOTEC CAM Basic user interface News about the T1 ZENOTEC T1 Tool Blank * for greater tool safety The ZENOTEC T1 Tool Blank* makes it unnecessary to manually change used cutters in the milling chamber. Die ZENOTEC T1 now automatically recognises the need to change a cutter, whether because the tool life has been reached or as a result of a breakage. Whenever it is necessary, the T1 transfers the tool blank stored in the stack to the milling chamber and swaps the used tool for a new one. Once the tool has been changed, the T1 continues with the milling process. Tool blank in the milling chamber The tool blank in the stack is always accessible to the operator, so that the worn or damaged tool can be replaced or removed whilst milling is in operation. Thanks to the tool blank, the ZENOTEC T1 with stack achieves a degree of automation which competitors can only offer in the higher price ranges. Ref. NEWS The Zenoflex dimension zirconium dioxide veneering ceramic is compatible with digital technology. Standard Segment Premium Segment ZENOSTAR Cut-Back One-layer technique Three-layer build-up Professional build-up Monolithic zirconium dioxide crown Can be individualised with stains Affordable, reliable, stable CAD dentine core with aesthetic incisal layer Affordable, reliable, stable Simple and convincing with only one layer of material Economical stain technique Build-up with Core Liner, Core Stain, Dentine and Incisal Gives better-thanaverage aesthetics. Covers all indications Aesthetics to satisfy the most discerning patients INDICATIONS: posteriors INDICATIONS: universal Increasing aesthetics Increasing automation Zirconium dioxide has developed into more than just a framework material. Staining and colouring techniques make it suitable for monolithic restorations. An outcome of the ongoing process of digitisation in the dental market. But of course, veneering still has a part to play. WIELAND has therefore adapted its successful veneering ceramics to meet the latest technical requirements. From ZENOSTAR restorations using the Cut-Back technique to One-layer ceramics and of course the professional build-up, everything is possible. In terms of materials technology, WIELAND s innovative drive has been extended to the further development of the existing zirconium dioxide ceramic. What is the effect of ASM (anti-stress minerals) in the ceramic? They enable undesirable tensile stresses to be removed whilst at the same time retaining the required compressive stresses. The veneered ZrO 2 restoration therefore boasts the best possible distribution of stresses, which can considerably increase the life of the restoration. What is more, the small amount of anti-stress minerals in the ceramic keep the CTE of Zenoflex dimension stable, even with multiple firings! For this reason, Zenoflex dimension should not be mixed with ZIROX, since the two materials have different microstructures and different CTE curves. The innovative ASM (anti-stress minerals) microstructure offers extra confidence and reliability bothfor the user and in clinical use. The new structure has been specially designed to match the zirconium dioxide material, which of course behaves completely differently to a metal during heating and cooling. Page 10 Issue 01/2011
NEWS Solutions in every price range The integral system behind the Zenoflex dimension ceramic concept not only offers increasing aesthetics, in relation to the complexity of the build-up, but also makes it possible to respond in a flexible way to the opportunities presented increasing automation. For example, ZENOSTAR Non-veneered all-ceramic monolithic crown and bridge restorations present an economical and biologically compatible complement to or replacement for non-precious metal restorations. Using the Zenoflex Stain Set together with our new translucent, pre-stained zirconium dioxide gives highly affordable crown and bridge work which is safe, reliable and robust. But the same stains can also be used for colouring ceramic restorations veneered with Reflex or Zenoflex dimension. A single set of stains for three different systems! ZENOSTAR brush infiltration ZENOSTAR staining One-layer ceramic Zenoflex dimension One offers a time-saving and easy-to-use build-up using just one ceramic material. By using the corresponding Core Liners or Core Stains, Stains and Body Stains, the required shades easily can be reproduced by staining. One powder, One layer, One bake! One-layer ceramic Professional build-up For a professional build-up, everything you need to achieve the best aesthetic results is available: Chromatix, Modifier, Opale Incisal, Opale Effects, Colored Translucencies, Stains etc. Here, too, the C-Box forms the creative heart of the system. All materials have their place in this compact, ergonomic and fashionable design system. Professional build-up Whereas in the past, ceramic systems have scored highly mainly on the basis of the aesthetic results obtained, other aspects have recently come to the fore: cost-effectiveness, simplicity, pricing and the ergonomic features of a product. The Reflex dimension and Zenoflex dimension ceramic lines meet all the requirements of a modern ceramic in a truly impressive fashion. Issue 01/2011 Page 11
NEWS For everything that simply can t be milled * The latest advances in software offering both improved functionality and new types of digital restoration are replacing manual methods of production. But not everything can be made using conventional milling machines. Removable partial restorations are a case in point here. For such applications, special methods of fabrication are often required. But in many cases, it is not a viable proposition to expand existing machinery to cater for specialised indications. It is usually much more cost-effective to outsource such involved processes to specialised production centres. This practice enables an ever growing range of applications to be processed quickly and professionally without the risk of capital investment. WIELAND can help you with this! With ZENOTEC SCI.ENCE *. The ZENOTEC SCI.ENCE * processes are simplicity itself Scan the model and design the restoration as usual in your own lab. NEWS Adapting to the demands of the time Train the Trainer Presenting the new X-Type ceramics at WIELAND In a highly practical workshop which focussed on the transfer of knowledge, WIELAND gave its German and international trainers an opportunity to test the new range of Reflex dimension and Zenoflex dimension and to form their own opinions of its user-friendliness, cost-effectiveness and aesthetic potential. Our aim was increasing aesthetics from low-budget to high-end, explains Reinhold Brommer, General Manager of WIELAND Dental + Technik. It is important for our trainers to be in a position to assist dental technicians in the ongoing transition to digitally compatible working practices and to show them new, worthwhile methods and lucrative opportunities. The requirements of affordability and flexibility are already incorporated into the assortment. The C-Box, the creative tower of the concept, offers the user of Reflex dimension and Zenoflex dimension the option to build up the system in a modular fashion. The user can decide which applications the lab needs to cater for. Subsequent additions to the set already have their designated place in the C-Box. For example, says Reinhold Brommer, anyone who just wants to start with One-layer ceramics just buys the materials needed for this. We have created a universal system of veneering ceramics which in terms of the options it offers is the only one of its kind on the market. To ensure that the creative aspect was not neglected, the participants at the workshop were able to show their own impressive talents, too. But it was not only the tremendous aesthetic potential of the high-end professional build-up that impressed these experts, because the results obtained by the monolithic ZENOSTAR crowns and the One-layer ceramic were equally well received. Easy friction-layer gold plating in the AGC Micro Vision After a long period of use, telescopic partial restorations can lose their friction. Restoring normal functionality in such cases is usually quite an involved process, but WIELAND has now developed a friction-layer gold plating kit for the AGC Micro Vision. The development work focused specifically on the AGC Micro Vision because this unit is already packed with futureready technologies. Our main goal was to make the process as simple as possible. In particular, we focused on using the conventional Micro Vision gold bath. This keeps inventories down. In addition, insertion and contacting is extremely easy. Up to 6 units can receive a friction layer at the same time. The process in brief: Clean the denture and mask the parts which are not to be plated. Affix the denture to the workpiece holder and connect the spiral contacts. Insert the special friction-layer beaker into the AGC Micro Vision. Measure out 50 ml of Vision bath and 450 ml of carrier liquid (the equivalent of approx. 1 g of gold). Insert the beaker with the electroplating head into the unit in the usual way and launch the process. A special software update has been developed for friction-layer plating; this ensures that the plating process is complete within two hours at the most. This update can be loaded into any AGC Micro Vision unit. Easily and affordably. 1. Cleaned partial denture prior to masking the parts that are not to be plated 2. Ready for plating 3. Denture fixed to the holder and with the spiral contacts applied 4. Inserting the beaker 5. Finished partial denture with new friction layer Issue 01/2011 Page 13
