The Assessor s visit: Will provide an opportunity for evidence to be gathered with respect to e-safety arrangements Is intended to support the school in ensuring that it has good e-safety policies and practices in place and to identify strengths and weaknesses in policy and practice. Should enable the school to celebrate those areas where there is good practice Should enable the school to identify development points which can be addressed within the normal school improvement process Is not an inspection and will be a supportive process. It is intended that the process will be owned by the school. Schedule for the day: To provide a full picture of the school s e-safety provision it is important that the Assessor is able to hold discussions with a range of staff, parents/carers, governors and students. The draft schedule is provided as a guide and will need to be amended in light of the school timetable; staff and student availability and any other school specific matters. The school should submit its proposed schedule for the day (based on the above) to the Assessor at least a week prior to the visit for final agreement. Evidence: In the limited time available, it is not possible to examine large amounts of printed evidence. The school should select a limited amount of evidence and might include: o relevant policies (e-safety; child protection; behaviour; anti-bullying) o minutes of relevant meetings (e.g. e-safety committee, Governors) o Evidence of curricular/awareness raising provision (e.g. programmes of study, schemes of work, posters etc) o evidence of provision for parents/carers and for the wider community o (if available) logs, audits and reports of e-safety incidents. Dr Albin Wallace: Has been trained and accredited by CEOP and has relevant experience in education and in e-safety. Is subject to Quality Assurance measures and a Code of Conduct Please do not hesitate to contact Albin to discuss any aspects of the above, to ensure that the school is fully aware of the process and to allow him to make informed and accurate judgements and also provide a positive and helpful experience for the school. 2 P a g e

We need to agree on a schedule for the Assessors visit. I have attached a draft schedule. Please feel free to amend it to suit local circumstances e.g. timing of the day/lessons etc. Can you please send me a suggested schedule (we may need a few email / phone conversations to finalise the schedule). On the day, can you provide a dedicated room me for the interviews? I will also need to see some limited evidence in support of your assessment particularly copies of e-safety related policies, AUPs, curricular details, programmes of work with parents/carers and the wider community. You may wish to provide other evidence please bear in mind that time is limited. Evidence may be provided on paper or in electronic format. There is no expectation that you will provide evidence in advance of the visit, but if you wish to do so then please send electronic copies to me. I may ask for some of this evidence in advance - but I would not wish to make too many demands on your time. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information or clarification. 3 P a g e

E-Safety Assessor Visit Prompt Questions on the day (not to be shared in advance except with head teacher) 1 SLT Thanks for taking the time to meet. We need to gather evidence in order to confirm whether the school has reached the necessary standard in E- Safety. In addition to helping identify areas of development, we hope that we can celebrate some of the good practice in e-safety at the school. Can you provide a brief description of the e-safety structures in the school? Who has responsibility for e-safety? Can we confirm the arrangements for the day and check if there are any particular circumstances that you might wish us to be aware of when talking to staff/students and others (e.g. any staff who may be feeling anxious/threatened by the process) 2 Incidents Check the school s experience of e-safety incidents have they had any/how were they dealt with/what did they learn from them? 3 Students / Pupils Introduce and explain reason for visit, thank them for their help. Can you describe how you use ICT in school and at home? (if relevant, ask about remote access/vle use at home). (Need brief responses) Are you allowed to use mobile phones or other hand held devices? (check on policy/safeguards/sanctions) Check their understanding of e-safety and what they think are the main issues Does the school have an Acceptable Use Policy/do you have to sign it?/do your parents sign it? What does the AUP say? 4 P a g e

What e-safety education/ training has the school provided for you? (where and how? in specific lessons/all lessons/assemblies/tutorials etc). Is it different in each year? In what other ways have you learnt about e- safety issues (if necessary prompt them about parents, peers, media campaigns etc) Do you think that pupils / students at the school are aware of e-safety issues and do you think they behave safely? (check on why this is rules/monitoring/filtering/sanctions?) Does the school use filtering? Can students get around it? Check what happens if they get caught. Is their use of ICT monitored? (This may have been answered above). Have pupils / students at the school suffered from cyber-bullying (check understanding). Is this a big problem? How is it dealt with? Do you think the school could have done more to educate you about e-safety? What say have you had in the way that e- safety policies have been developed at the school? (check on student voice/impact). If relevant check on peer mentoring/bullying councils/reporting systems etc. Do you help to provide e-safety lessons/awareness to other students - here or at other schools? Do you think the staff have a good awareness of e-safety? Is there any other information that you think may help us to help the school? 4 Governors & Parents / Carers Introduce and explain reason for visit, thank them for their help. 5 P a g e Have Governors been involved in the development/approval of the e-safety

policy? (check how) Is there a Governor with responsibility for e- safety and if so how does this role work? Has this Governor/other Governors/all Governors received e-safety training? (how and where?) Is the e-safety policy linked to/embedded with other relevant policies eg Child Protection, bullying, behaviour? Do Governors receive reports of e-safety incidents and e-safety related behaviour problems, and if so, how? How would Governors know if students and staff were safe from e-safety incidents? Does the school have an AUP for students and for staff? How does the school inform parents/carers and members of the community about e- safety awareness/issue (check whether this is only for parents/carers or whether it covers the wider community). Have the pupils/students improved their parents /carers e-safety awareness/understanding following work carried out in school (seek examples). Are parents/carers aware of cyber-bullying incidents taking place in school? If so, how has the school dealt with them? Could you suggest how the school s e-safety policies/provision could be improved? Is there any other information that you think may help us to help the school? Is there any information we can help you with? 5 Support Staff Introduce and explain reason for visit, thank them for their help. 6 P a g e

Does the school have an e-safety policy and AUPs for staff and students? Were you involved in the development of the e-safety policy/aup. If not, how were you made aware of it? What training have you received in e-safety? How is this carried out? (may have been answered above) Is there good technical support in place to ensure that the school network/computers are secure? (check on passwords, filtering, monitoring) Are staff aware of issues that relate to communication with students on mobile phones, email, VLE, social networking sites? What policies are in place? Does the school have policies and practices in place for the security of personal data. Are staff aware of this? (check on access, transfer, laptops, removable media, encryption etc.) Would you know how to report an e-safety incident (or suspected incident)? How would it be dealt with? How is the school e-safety policy embedded into other policies eg child protection, bullying, behaviour? How does this work in practice? What is your role in this? To your knowledge have there been any e- safety incidents? How were these dealt with? Is there any other information that you think may help us to help the school 6 Teachers Introduce and explain reason for visit, thank them for their help. e-safety policy/aup. If not, how were you made aware of it? What training have you received in e-safety? How is this carried out? (may have been answered above) Do you think staff are clear about their responsibilities over their own safe use? In many schools we are told that one of the problems is that the students know more about ICT/e-safety than the staff do you think that is true here? Does this have an implication for e-safety? What e-safety education/awareness has the school provided for students? (where and how?). (try to see how embedded this is - does it only happen in ICT lessons?) Is there good technical support in place to ensure that the school network/computers are secure? (check on passwords, filtering, monitoring) Are staff aware of issues that relate to communication with students on mobile phones, email, VLE, social networking sites? What policies are in place? E-Safety Mark Assessor Report Form School: Date of assessment: TBC Assessor: Dr Albin Wallace Headteacher: I will use this proforma (in summary) as the basis for feedback to the school on the day of the visit. The full proforma will be completed and sent by email to the head teacher within five working days of the school visit. I may not comment on each of the prompts below, but I will briefly highlight the strengths of the school s policy and practice in the boxes below. Element A Policy and Leadership To what extent has the school demonstrated that there is good leadership for e-safety, that responsibilities are clearly understood and upheld and that good policies are in place and embedded? Is there commitment to e-safety from the Governors, staff and all members of the school community? Are sanctions clearly understood and enforced? Are members of the school clear about reporting mechanisms and are they confident in their use? Does the school ensure that communication technologies are well used, but that e-safety related issues are taken into account and minimised by good practice? Element B Infrastructure How secure is the school s infrastructure? Is there a clearly understood password security policy and is it implemented and monitored. Is filtering provided by an accredited supplier, is it effective and supported by regular and effective monitoring? Does the school ensure that personal data is securely stored and transferred and safe from loss/misuse? Element C Education How good is the e-safety education and training that is provided. Is it comprehensive, revisited and reenforced? Has the school developed high levels of digital literacy among its members? Is the contribution of young people recognised and encouraged? Is there good provision to increase the e-safety understanding of parents and members of the wider community? Element D Standards and Inspection Is there effective monitoring and reporting in place? Does this monitoring and reporting have an impact on school policy and practice does it contribute to school improvement? 12 P a g e

Areas of strength and good practice What are the most significant aspects of the school s e-safety policy and practice? Are there any aspects of the school s work which could be examples of outstanding practice that would be of benefit to other schools? Areas for further development Which areas of the school s e-safety policy and practice would benefit from further development? Additional Comments It is likely that the sections above will have provided opportunity for most comments to be made, but this section does allow me to make additional comments, if required. I may use this section to recommend the school as one that would be suitable to receive good practice visits (if they are so willing). Assessor s Recommendation The school has / has not (deleted as necessary) reached the minimum standards in e-safety. 13 P a g e
