1 e-safety and Ofsted: Is your School Ready for Inspection? Rebecca Avery e-safety Officer, Kent County Council

2 Why e-safety & why now? e-safety is the school s ability: to protect and educate pupils and staff in their use of technology to have the appropriate mechanisms to intervene and support any incident where appropriate. Many incidents happen beyond the physical boundaries of the school but will impact on pupils or staff It is essential that pupils and staff are fully prepared and supported to use these technologies responsibly.

3 e-safety and Ofsted New School Inspection Framework Areas relating to e-safety include: quality of leadership in and management of the school provide a broad and balanced curriculum that: meets the needs of all pupils and promotes their good behaviour and safety and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development engage with parents and carers in supporting pupils achievement, behaviour and safety and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development ensure that all pupils are safe Behaviour and safety of pupils at the school pupils behaviour towards, and respect for, other young people and adults, including freedom from bullying and harassment that may include cyberbullying pupils ability to assess and manage risk appropriately and to keep themselves safe

4 Inspecting e-safety The safe use of new technologies evaluated the extent to which schools teach pupils to adopt safe and responsible practices in using new technologies assessed training on internet safety for the staff in the schools visited considered the schools links with families in terms of e-safety Section 5 Briefing Inspecting e-safety 2012 Updated April 2013 & due to be updated frequently due to rapid pace of change e-safety Aims to support inspectors in reviewing school s safeguarding arrangements when carrying out section 5 inspections

5 Inspecting e-safety Questions for SLT How do you ensure that all staff receive appropriate online safety training that is relevant and regularly up to date? What to look for: at least annual training (in-service or online) for all staff training content changes each session to reflect advances in technology recognised group or committee or individual with e-safety responsibility Good or Outstanding: e-safety certified professional(s) (CEOP, EPICT, LA and so on)

6 Inspecting e-safety Questions for SLT What mechanisms does the school have in place to support pupils and staff facing online safety issues? What to look for: robust reporting channels Good or Outstanding: online reporting mechanism (for example SHARP)

What to look for: parents e-safety sessions raising awareness through school website or newsletters Good or Outstanding: workshops for parents children teaching parents (for example at sessions or in homework)

8 Inspecting e-safety Questions for SLT Does the school have e-safety policies and acceptable use policies in place? How does the school know that they are clear and understood and respected by all? What to look for: e-safety policy is regularly reviewed evidence that these are freely available (poster, handbooks, etc) Children/staff can recall rules Good or Outstanding: children integral to policy production

9 Inspecting e-safety Questions for SLT Describe how your school educates children and young people to build knowledge, skills and capability when it comes to online safety? How do you assess its effectiveness? What to look for: school assemblies programmes delivered across all age groups Good or Outstanding: Peer Mentoring

10 Inspecting e-safety Inadequate Practice: Personal data is often unsecured and/or leaves school site without encryption. Security of passwords is ineffective, for example passwords are shared or common with all but the youngest children. Policies are generic and not updated. There is no progressive, planned e-safety education across the curriculum, for example there is only an assembly held annually. There is no internet filtering or monitoring. There is no evidence of staff training. Children are not aware of how to report a problem.

11 Outstanding and Good Practice Whole school consistent approach All staff can recognise and are aware of e-safety issues. High quality leadership and management make e-safety a priority across all areas of the school A high priority given to training in e-safety, extending expertise widely and building internal capacity. The contribution of pupils, parents and the wider school community is valued and integrated. Robust and integrated reporting routines School-based online reporting processes that are clearly understood by the whole school, allowing the pupils to report issues to nominated staff, for example SHARP. Report Abuse buttons, for example CEOP. Clear, signposted and respected routes to key members of staff. Effective use of peer mentoring and support.

12 Outstanding and Good Practice Staff All teaching and non-teaching staff receive regular and up-to-date training. At least one staff member has accredited training, for example CEOP, EPICT, Local Authority. Policies Rigorous e-safety policies and procedures are in place, written in plain English, contributed to by the whole school, updated regularly and ratified by governors. The e-safety policy should be integrated with other relevant policies such as behaviour, safeguarding and anti-bullying. The e-safety policy should incorporate an Acceptable Usage Policy that is signed by pupils and/or parents as well as all staff and respected by all.

13 Outstanding and Good Practice Education A progressive curriculum that is flexible, relevant and engages pupils interest; that is used to promote e-safety through teaching pupils how to stay safe, how to protect themselves from harm and how to take responsibility for their own and others safety. Positive rewards are used to cultivate positive and responsible use. Peer mentoring programmes. Safer Internet Day Infrastructure Recognised Internet Service Provider or RBC together with age/maturity related filtering that is actively monitored.

14 Outstanding and Good Practice Monitoring and Evaluation Risk assessment taken seriously and used to good effect in promoting e- Safety. Using data effectively to assess the impact of e-safety practice and how this informs strategy. Management of Personal Data The impact level of personal data is understood and data is managed securely and in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.
