8 secrets Your Burglar Won't Tell You

In the United States alone, a home burglary occurs every 14 seconds. These kinds of statistics can be alarming, and the best thing you can do as a homeowner is educate yourself on how to deter a potential break in and keep your family safe. The fact is that homes without security systems are up to 3 times more likely to be targeted by a burglar. The biggest benefit to having a security system is often the peace of mind that comes from constant, reliable monitoring of your home. There are certain factors that you may not even realize are making your home more attractive to a burglar. This ebook covers some of the most common mistakes people make, and more importantly what steps to take to make your home more safe and secure. Here are 8 secrets your burglar won t tell you..

Your fake rock is the oldest trick in the book. Forget your front door mat or the painfully fake rock. Those are the most common and obvious spare key hiding spots and those are the first locations any burglar will search. Do you have a doggy door that Fido can easily come in and out? Tape your spare key securely to your dog's collar where it is not highly visible.

Thanks for the room with a view. Is your 60-inch TV taking center stage? Is your brand new computer sitting in the front row? Intruders generally follow their locations and victims. Stand outside at night and in the daytime in front of your largest windows and look in. Do you see any of your valuables outright? If you do, so does everyone else. If possible, move valuables out of sight. If you can't, then make sure the windows are always covered.

Your car is not safe just because it is in the driveway. If possible, remember to always make room for your car in your garage. This helps prevent your car from being stolen, broken into or vandalized. It also makes it harder for a potential thief to track when you are gone. If you can t park in the garage (or don t have one), make sure to lock any car you leave in the driveway. A burglar could easily get in and use your garage door opener to gain entry to the house. Also, don't forget to shut the garage door whenever you leave or don't need access to it.

That portable safe is really There are lots of unused spaces in the walls between the studs, and they make perfect places to hide jewelry, guns, cash, and other valuables. convenient, I ll just take it with me. To gain access, use a plate that was previously used for a landline or electrical outlet, or install a fake one. These types of hiding places often go undected. There you go Safe Touch suggestion keeping your most precious items safe and sound.

Your shrubs and bushes make a perfect hiding spot. Walk around your home and look at your shrubbery. If bushes and shrubs obscure your windows and doors, trim them back. Burglars love the screening that overgrown shrubs provide. High privacy fences can also be inviting for burglars, as they provide a shield from neighbors or patrol cars.

I can tell a lot about you by looking around your yard. Walk around your home and look at your shrubbery. If bushes and shrubs obscure your windows and doors, trim them back. Burglars love the screening that overgrown shrubs provide. High privacy fences can also be inviting for burglars, as they provide a shield from neighbors or patrol cars.

If I look familiar to you, it s probably because I am. Take every precaution with people that are working in or around your home, whether it s someone cleaning your gutters or delivering your new stove. A sophisticated burglar will use this opportunity to gain entry to your home (perhaps through your generous offer to let them use your bathroom), and unlatch the back window to make their return a little easier. Burglars will do their homework. They ll often canvass the neighborhood and attempt to figure out the homeowner s behavior. They may even knock on your door to see if you are home, then make up a bogus story if you answer.

I don t have much patience. If a burglar can t make it into your house in one minute, they will likely just move onto the next one. Things that may seem simple can be very effective at deterring a potential break in right off the bat. Signs and stickers have proven to be very effective against home intrusions. If a burglar sees a sign that a home is protected by a security company, that is an obvious red flag to move on. Dogs and loud noises are also excellent deterrents. Consider using a sign that warns, beware of dog, or leave a TV or radio on while you are away.

As always, a home security system is your first line of defense against burglars. To learn more about how SafeTouch can keep your family and home protected, request a FREE home security audit today. Call us toll free at (888) 723-8682
