Photo Paul Raftery We design great schools We are Cullinan Studio, experts in design for Education. Inspiring learning in young minds is our passion. An award-winning practice based in London, we are dedicated to creating places that are radically innovative and holistically sustainable. Proof of this is best demonstrated by our 50 years of successful built projects, which span whole-city masterplans to individual homes both in the UK and abroad. Our education design portfolio includes Secondary, Primary and University level learning spaces, including emerging models for all-through schools, free schools and child-centred learning environments. Having worked across both the state and independent sectors, we understand that the financial challenge to create exceptional places to learn is ever more pertinent for Headteachers and Local Authorities. Cullinan Studio has the talent, knowledge and technical ability to offer our school clients a full range of services to provide the best value design available. As recognised leaders in sustainable design, our proposals can reduce your school s energy consumption and create healthy environments for learning and teaching. We have the skills and experience to facilitate effective briefing workshops and thereby enable smart decision making to get the maximum effect from limited funds. The key is working closely with the school and the community to understand their most important aspirations. This booklet illustrates some of our most recent school projects. We hope you find it intriguing, and we would be happy to meet with you to discuss any plans your school may have for improving its learning environment.

Gradual refurbishment of this Grade 2 listed Victorian primary school has created wonderful learning spaces as well as making significant energy savings. Like many London Board Schools, in recent years classrooms have suffered from poor layout and discomfort in hot and cold weather. Our Strategic Future Plan for the school gives a coherent overall vision for the phased work and supports funding applications. Improvements were realised in school holidays to minimise disruption, using very limited funds, mostly provided through the school maintenance budget. Creative and resourceful design thinking resulted in the successful remodelling and de-cluttering of classrooms, improved circulation and better teacher surveillance by consolidating the existing toilets into one unisex block. high level ventilaton reinstated restoration of listed heritage features new solar shading domestic scale details

Shenley Academy and sixth form centre is a new-build school for 1,150 eleven to eighteen year olds. We have worked hard with client and contractor to turn the complex brief into a strong clear layout with classrooms clustered around six learning centres and a new theatre and sports hall flanking external courts to the south. These larger facilities have been carefully located to encourage out-of-hours use by the local community. The large scale windows give views over the landscaped grounds, allow natural light into the classrooms and work with the cladding panels and brickwork to form a striking building facade.

Holy Cross Primary School used cutting-edge off-site prefabrication methods to deliver an energy efficient and speedily constructed new building whilst providing learning spaces enhanced by generous daylighting and an exposed timber structure. The single storey school is organised into two profiled wings of classrooms connected by a naturally top-lit central street with specialised learning areas. Individual classrooms have access and views to outdoor space as well as their own cloakroom block. A kit of parts was developed with timber-frame house builders Stewart Milne which can be adapted to suit a variety of site conditions and school requirements for future projects.
Forest Gate Community School Newham, London new sports hall above entrance We worked in close collaboration with the client and contractor in this BSF project to transform the existing school s confusing layout and outdated facilities into a clear sequence of enjoyable and coherent new spaces. The design allies new facilities including a four court sports hall, reception area, enterprise café and conference suite with improvements to the retained school building to meet current standards. The school colours of green and gold are used as a palette for the cladding of the new entrance building and a number of new internal elements. classrooms reconnected with central learning area new entrance building facing the main street new business enterprise suite on ground floor Photo Edmund Sumner
Torriano Junior School Gatehouse Camden, London This elegant building houses the school s vibrant range of musical and theatrical pursuits in a new first floor hall. The gatehouse s distinctive roof is designed to reduce energy consumption by aiding natural ventilation and the hall space can be divided into two separate rooms if required. Robust and traditional external materials marry well with the surrounding context and the location of the building on the site s boundary means it creates a real sense of arrival into the school.
